Musharraf's Last Stand - Pakistan February 2008 Is this the beginning of the end for Musharraf? While few expected the elections to be fair, there's massive discontent with his rule. The opposition are planning large protests if the poll is rigged. "He is a usurper! He has to go!" chant protesters at an anti-Musharraf rally. They claim General Musharraf has trampled on the constitution by reinstalling himself as President and staking the courts with compliant judges. "If he can pack the courts with his favourites and suspend the constitution twice, why would he not rig the elections?" Everyone expects Benazir Bhutto's party, the PPP, to win a large sympathy vote in the poll. But her assassination has thrown the PPP into chaos. "Workers feel they have totally lost their way. They're confused", confides the party caretaker. "I don't think the Pakistan People's Party has anything left with Benazir Bhutto gone." Their new leader, Asif Ali Zardari, is a potentially divisive figure who; "doesn't have a good reputation in this country". Bhutto's 19 year old son can not even enter politics for another six years. In contrast, Musharraf has stacked parliament with his supporters and is pulling out all the stops to win the election. With so much at stake, only one thing seems sure: Pakistan is at a critical moment in its turbulant history. Tags: Journeyman Pictures Pakistan Benazir Bhutto Musharraf discontent politics |

Masterful management of secrecy of the outcome. Nail-biting speech revealed Musharraf's decision at the very end. Musharraf had two choices: 1) challenge the impeachment (hard to make stick) 2) resign to avoid a prolonged process - since the incompetent government would have trouble prosecuting (they had not even revealed charges, or defined the process for impeachment) In my opinion he was less of a problem for the incompetents as President. Now he will be freer to criticize them. I predict he will join or start a political party (most probably with Sheikh Rasheed and others). Listening Post - post-Musharraf Pakistan - 12 Sep 08- Part 2 The Listening Post looks at Pakistan in the post-Musharraf era. Under President Pervez Musharraf's government, the Pakistani media was subject to extensive liberalisation with dozens of new TV channels being launched. But as the Musharraf era neared its end stations were closed, anchor people were ordered off the air and newspapers faced censure for reporting unfavourably on the government. What will the coalition government and Asif Ali Zardari, the new president, mean for the media now? What will the change of leadership mean for freedom of speech? In this week's Newsbytes: Saudi TV station Al Arabiya's man in Tehran gets kicked out of Iran; problems at the recently launched BBC Arabic channel as staff vote to strike; under fire Thai PM Samak Sundaravej is told to leave office because of a TV cooking show; and American cable giant MSNBC bows to pressure after accusations of overly politicising its US convention coverage. The largest and most expensive experiment in scientific history has just been switched on beneath the French-Swiss border. If you're not sure exactly what the Large Hadron Collider is for, perhaps our Video of the Week might help. It's a collision of physics and rap. Pervez Musharraf Faces Impeachment CHAN: And Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf is facing impeachment proceedings. The move is likely to deepen political uncertainty in the already troubled Muslim nation. STORY: It's been said his days are numbered. And now time is running out for Pervez Musharraf. Pakistan's ruling coalition has announced it will begin impeachment proceedings against the president. Party leaders Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif made the announcement after three days of talks. It's a move likely to deepen the political uncertainty in the Muslim nation. [Asif Ali Zardari, Co-Chairman, PPP Party]: "The coalition believes, leadership believes, that it has become imperative to move for impeachment under the Article 47 against General Musharraf." And with the announcement came a stark warning to Musharraf: "Make no attempt at dismissing the government." Musharraf has been accused of plunging the country into political and economic crises. A series of measures were implemented by Musharraf seen as an attempt to hang on to power, with the backing of the army who he has heavy influence over. The response of the army for their former chief will be crucial. [Asif Ali Zardari, Co-Chairman, PPP Party]: "If someone has no love for Pakistan, if he does this act, it will be his last verdict against (the) people, against (the) people's mandate and against Pakistan." Following the news, Mr. Musharraf canceled his trip to attend the opening of the Olympic Games in Beijing. Musharraf's appeal to the opposition to give him another chance seems to have failed. But the President has been weakened before and has not been ready to go. Musharraf has vowed to fight the challenge. All eyes will be on his next move. I apologise, says Musharraf President Pervez Musharraf on Friday condemned the attack on the offices of Geo TV, The News and Jang in Islamabad and apologised for the incident. "I want to tell the nation that the sense of our reforms include freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of the media," President Musharraf said on Geo television following the shocking attack on the Geo TV/The News offices by the police in a fit of anger to gag the media. The president said: "We support freedom of journalism and want its supremacy." He said the incident should have not happened and termed it a conspiracy to sabotage the whole process. He said our mandate is to uphold human rights and "we condemn its violation". Musharraf also said that those involved in the incident would be taken to task today. Meanwhile, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Durrani termed the incident "highly condemnable". "The culprits would be taken to task, and a probe has already been initiated under the directives of President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz," he said. "It's highly condemnable and deplorable act," said the minister who visited Geo TV/The News offices after the incident. He said it was personally shocking for him as he was deeply hurt by this unfortunate incident and would not sit idle until the culprits were brought to justice. "The government would make the culprits an example so that nobody even think of doing so in the future," he said. "This incident has been carried out by some forces who aim at derailment of the steps taken by President Musharraf for freedom and development of the media in Pakistan," he added. He said the government would compensate the damages caused to the bureau office of Geo TV, The News and Jang and bring to book those responsible for the attack. "Freedom of the press is the responsibility of everyone and all measures would be taken to avoid recurrence of such incidents in the future as freedom of the press ultimately strengthens the country," he added. "The Ministry of Information would hold a joint investigation in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior into the incident," he added. He said, "The video footage of storming the offices will be obtained aiming to pinpoint the real culprits." Responding to a question, Durrani said the entire police contingents in Islamabad were under the command of the Islamabad Capital Police. Musharraf used phosphorus against civilians Here we go - an insider's confession and testimony against Musharraf for his crimes against humanity. Western media, even the much vaunted independent bloggers kept their distance and didn't publish the news reports that Musharraf regime had used chemical weapons against the students in Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa. Let those who refused to publish such reports come out and watch this interview of one of the senior core commanders. The translation is given but there is ample English in his speech to tell them about Musharraf's used of chemical weapons. Also enough to indict Musharraf. Lt. Gen. Kiyani said the use was so excessive that you cannot even compare it with killing an ant with a hammer. see more info at dictatorshipwatch dot com.
