Hurricane Katrina: TRAILER for The Drive In a new approach to telling stories from the front lines of post-Katrina New Orleans, The New Orleans Video Access Center (NOVAC) is producing a one-hour documentary called The Drive. It's an extensie driving tour through four of New Orleans' most devastated neighborhoods supported with maps, interviews and an original score by Emmy nominated composer, Gil Talmi. The full version of segment one is available on You Tube (keyword: NOVACDOC). In addition to The Drive, NOVAC has collaborated with local filmmakers to produce a series of short documentaries on the people, culture and spirit that make New Orleans an American city worth rebuilding. Please help us build awareness about what's going on in New Orleans by sharing our project with others. We hope to convey the duality of life in post-Katrina New Orleans. In many respects, things are progressing. Families are moving home, cultural activities are abundant and, in some neighborhoods, life has a sense of near normalcy; however, a short drive in almost any direction provides a different picture. The magnitude of flooding was incomprehensible and nearly 10 months later, New Orleans has many challenges to overcome. The Raw Truth: Louisiana's Oyster Industry and the Rebuildin Before the 2005 hurricanes, Louisiana harvested almost 40 percent of the nation's oysters: 750 million oysters a year or 250 million pounds in shell. The storms also damaged boats, docks and other infrastructure as well as caused the displacement of workers. This short documentary looks at Oyster production before and after Hurricane Katrina. It also provides a brief history on an industry and the families that produces one of many Louisiana exports enjoyed by people around the world. Hurricane Katrina: The Drive: New Orleans Lower 9th Ward A painful irony of post-Katrina New Orleans is how few people throughout the country understand the extent of what has happened to the city. Many people do not realize that, nearly 10 months later, things are not back to normal in New Orleans. As America's attention fades from Hurricane Katrina's impact, a disabled New Orleans continues to struggle for survival. In many respects, New Orleans is alive and kicking. People are moving home, schools are opening, cultural activities have returned and, in some neighborhoods, life has a sense of near normalcy; however, all it takes is a short drive outside of the French Quarter or Uptown to witness extensive loss and devastation. The magnitude of flooding was incomprehensible and New Orleans still has many challenges to overcome. The only way to really get a sense of the magnitude of the post-Katrina destruction is to physically walk or drive through the affected areas. With this in mind, NOVAC presents The Drive. The Drive provides a raw visual and narrated tour through four of the most devastated neighborhoods in New Orleans and is supported with extensive footage, maps, interviews, digital imagery, and an original musical score by Emmy nominated composer, Gil Talmi. Through this community-based documentary project, we present stories from a local point-of-view. We hope this effort will garner continued support for the rebuilding of a great American city. A Loud Color New Orleans resident Louis Harding gives a tour of the community center he opened one month before Hurricane Katrina hit. "Before the storm, the building was a loud color. In fact...it was so loud you could hear it before you could see it," Louis had spent years trying to open the Marcus Garvey Resource Center and then it was destroyed when the levees broke. Despite the setback, 72-year-old Harding refuses to call it quits. He was on a mission to combat poverty in the African-American community in New Orleans before the city flooded and he hasn't given up. While sorting through the debris of his life, Louis discusses the importance of history and how life for African-Americans in New Orleans has changed in the last 100 years. "A Loud of Color" is one of several short documentaries produced by the New Orleans Video Access Center which profile New Orleanians and their struggle to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Several New Orleans filmmakers were challenged to create a short documentary on New Orleans as we try to gain support from the nation to help rebuild our great city. Krew Du Who? Many people choose to live, work and play in New Orleans because of the diversity of people and a culture that celebrates life. Mardi Gras is a perfect example of a cultural institution in New Orleans celebrated by both local residents and people from around the world. This short documentary provides a glimpse into the first post-Katrina Mardi Gras along side the "Krew Du Poux". The Krew Du Poux celebrates the tradition of Mardi Gras with an untraditional twist or two. Members of this Krewe (spelled by them as Krew) are made up of artists and musicians that predominantly live in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans' Ninth Ward. Many of the members are also performers within a local circus group. This project is part of a series of short documentaries produced by the non-profit, New Orleans Video Access Center (NOVAC). L'esprit du coeur There was an article from Slate.com posted on Sept. 22, 2005 stating whether the country should spend 200 billion dollars on rebuilding New Orleans or give each family 200,000 dollars to relocate elsewhere. Most New Orleanians found this rather insulting. In this documentary short, we interview individuals and families that live in the hurricane affected New Orleans metro area to tackle this question. The interview subjects have returned to their homes amidst all of the destruction in hopes of holding on to and rebuilding what is left of their community. None of them could even fathom the idea of leaving the city and relocating elsewhere. Why? Like people across the nation, they choose to live near family and friends in an environment that offers a sense of "place". This project is part of a series of short documentaries produced by the non-profit, New Orleans Video Access Center (NOVAC).
