It will be the biggest display of Russian military power in the Western Hemisphere since the Cold War. A Russian navy spokesman said the nuclear-powered cruiser, Peter the Great, an anti-submarine ship and two support vessels will take part in joint rescue operations and anti-terrorism drills on the sea with the Venezuelan navy. The Russian vessels will also carry out combat training tasks, including missile launches and artillery exercises, during the two-month cruise. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is also expected to pay a visit to Moscow later this week, during which he is expected to meet members of the Russian leadership and ink bilateral agreements on cooperation in energy, science and technology. Escuela Naval "Arturo Prat" - Armada de Chile Fue fundada por el Director Supremo General Don Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme, el 4 de agosto de 1818 con el nombre de "Academia de Jóvenes Guardias Marinas". Esta iniciativa se gestó por la necesidad de establecer un plantel de Oficiales de Marina que fueran capaces de conducir las operaciones navales de la recientemente formada Primera Escuadra Nacional. La Escuela Naval es custodia de la espada del Capitán Arturo Prat, cuyo nombre ostenta como patrono desde el 24 de septiembre de 1945; también, de un cañón, dos tapas del cabrestante, un trozo de mástil y la campana de la "Esmeralda", hundida gloriosamente en el Combate Naval de Iquique, el 21 de Mayo de 1879; de la campana del acorazado "Almirante Latorre", de antiguos estandartes de unidades navales y del establecimiento, de dos cañones coloniales del siglo XVIII y, enmarcan su severo portalón los cañones del blindado "Cochrane", nave que protagonizó la batalla acaecida el 8 de Octubre de 1879 en Angamos. Su historia más reciente registra la entrega de un sector de los terrenos que conformaban el antiguo Parque Municipal "Rubén Darío", del sector Alejo Barrios de Playa Ancha, efectuada el 14 de abril de 1955 por el alcalde don Santiago Díaz Buzeta (guardiamarina graduado en diciembre de 1923), terrenos que se sumaron a los ocupados anteriormente por las baterías costeras de los fuertes "Valdivia" y "Yerbas Buenas" y por el faro "Punta Angeles". Registra también la colocación de la primera piedra de la nueva construcción, llevada a cabo el 4 de agosto de 1957, siendo Presidente de la República el General don Carlos Ibáñez del Campo. Grandes triunfos jalonan la feliz trayectoria del establecimiento de formación naval. Durante el transcurso de su larga singladura, por sus aulas han pasado miles de alumnos los que, orientados principalmente hacia la carrera naval, han demostrado a través de su eficiente y positivo desempeño la alta calidad de la educación recibida. This was the joint US/UK/French naval war games in the Atlantic Ocean preparing for a naval blockade of Iran and the likely resulting war in the Persian Gulf area. The massive war games included a US Navy supercarrier battle group, an US Navy expeditionary carrier battle group, a Royal Navy carrier battle group, a French nuclear hunter-killer submarine plus a large number of US Navy cruisers, destroyers and frigates playing the "enemy force". The lead American ship in these war games, the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN71) and its Carrier Strike Group Two (CCSG-2) are now headed towards Iran along with the USS Ronald Reagon (CVN76) and its Carrier Strike Group Seven (CCSG-7) coming from Japan. They are joining two existing USN battle groups in the Gulf area: the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN72) with its Carrier Strike Group Nine (CCSG-9); and the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) with its expeditionary strike group. Likely also under way towards the Persian Gulf is the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) and its expeditionary strike group, the UK Royal Navy HMS Ark Royal (R07) carrier battle group, assorted French naval assets including the nuclear hunter-killer submarine Amethyste and French Naval Rafale fighter jets on-board the USS Theodore Roosevelt. These ships took part in the just completed Operation Brimstone. The build up of naval forces in the Gulf will be one of the largest multi-national naval armadas since the First and Second Gulf Wars. The intent is to create a US/EU naval blockade (which is an Act of War under international law) around Iran (with supporting air and land elements) to prevent the shipment of benzene and certain other refined oil products headed to Iranian ports. Iran has limited domestic oil refining capacity and imports 40% of its benzene. Cutting off benzene and other key products would cripple the Iranian economy. The neo-cons are counting on such a blockade launching a war with Iran.
