Molly Ivins - PBS Newshour Tribute Essay Originally Aired: February 1, 2007 Columnist Molly Ivins Dies at the Age of 62 Syndicated columnist Molly Ivins passed away Wednesday at the age of 62 due to complications from breast cancer. Ms. Ivins was widely known as the humorist who first referred to President George W. Bush as "shrub." Transcript: JIM LEHRER: Finally tonight, Molly Ivins, who died yesterday of breast cancer in Austin, Texas. She wrote books, essays, and they were always very funny and usually about very serious matters. We chose an example of her work that was broadcast here on the NewsHour in 1986. It was an essay on what Molly called "fine art in her home state." MOLLY IVINS, Columnist: Many people will tell you Texas is beautiful. Mostly Texans will tell you that. Well, it's true, in parts. But there is a lot of Texas that's not much to write home about. Parts of it are just plain homely, and then, here and there, ugly barely covers it. But what does mankind do when faced with the challenge of ugliness? Man creates art, is what he does, builds his own beauty. And that's what we do down here in Texas, too. And I'm about to show you some of it, so don't say you weren't warned. A lot of our art is found in front of courthouses, so as to let folks know it's official. Now, this here is a statue of a peanut found in the courthouse square in Floresville. And here's a statue of a shrimp right here in downtown Aransas Pass. In Seguin, we have a statue of a pecan. Not everybody likes it. Crystal City, Texas, happens to be the spinach capital of the universe. You may not have known that. It's hard to make a good statue of spinach, so they built one of this guy instead. Now, out here in Odessa, which is way to hell and gone on the other side of the state -- and I hope you all appreciate the trouble we went to getting here -- is this piece of art. Now we are in Paris, Texas. Just like Paris, France, this Paris is famous for art. Here, for example, is a statue of a Brahma bull on the roof of the Fina Filling Station. This is a fine example of a genre of Texas art: the cow-on-building genre. I don't know why we like to put cows on the roof, but I kind of like it. Now, here in the Paris cemetery, we found the stone of the late Willet Babcock, which, as you can see, says, "Love never dies." Mr. Babcock passed on to the big ranch in the sky back in 1881. And you see here on his stone a statue of Jesus leaning on the cross. Looks a little tired to me. Come around to the back side of Jesus, you'll notice he's wearing cowboy boots. The wind just lifted his robe a little so we can see them. I thought you'd like that. Actually, the best statue of Jesus I ever heard about was one made out of tuna fish for the centerpiece of an Easter buffet. It had a little pimento stigmata in its outstretched little tuna-fishy hands, but I can't show it to you, 'cause it's already been ate. Some art does not do a thing in the way of overcoming ugliness; in fact, it just compounds the problem. This is probably the ugliest statue in the whole state. It's the Goddess of Liberty, which normally resides on top of the state capitol, which houses the state legislature, which is bad enough without having this thing up there. Right now, it's down here being fixed because it started to come apart. But instead of taking advantage of this great opportunity to improve the statue's looks, all they're doing is restoring it to its original state of ugliness. They made this new, unimproved statue of the Goddess of Liberty out of recycled aluminum, specifically out of old beer cans. Now, you know that is true on account of this is the "MacNeil-Lehrer show" and they wouldn't let me make anything up. What else would the state of Texas make a Statue of Liberty out of except old beer cans? It's legal to drink while driving in Texas, which many Texans believe is an art in itself. Now, here's a statue I think would look good on the state capitol. It's our state bug, the roach. Can we see how it would look on top of the capitol? You all want to hear an old roach joke? You know how come all Texans wear pointy-toed boots? So's we can stomp the roaches that hug in the corners. Well, it sure has been a pleasure visiting with you all about art in Texas. Sincerely yours. JIM LEHRER: Our friend, Molly Ivins, was 62 years old. Tags: Molly Ivins politics shrub Bush Texas PBS |

Patriot Radio News Hour-3/11/08:Elliot Spitzer's Hypocrisy2 http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/politics/la-na-spitzer11mar11,1,2076826.story N.Y.'s Spitzer linked to prostitution ring NEW YORK -- Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who built a national reputation as an aggressive, uncompromising prosecutor, apologized to the public Monday after a federal wiretap caught him allegedly arranging to meet a high-priced prostitute in a Washington hotel. The recording captured a man identified as "Client 9" -- a regular customer of an elite international call-girl ring -- setting up a date with a petite brunet who used the name "Kristen." A source familiar with the case identified the Democratic governor as Client 9. As the public -- and his fellow politicians -- reacted with shock and outrage, Spitzer strode to a lectern in Manhattan, his arm around his wife, Silda. Both looked deeply shaken, but Spitzer delivered his brief remarks in a crisp, steady tone as Silda stood, stone-faced, at his side. "I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family, that violates my, or any, sense of right and wrong," he said. Spitzer, who has three teenage daughters, has not been charged. He spoke for one minute and did not elaborate on his actions. But plenty of salacious details emerged in court documents filed last week when federal prosecutors indicted four people they accused of being ringleaders in the Emperors Club VIP, which advertised companions with "beauty, elegance, erudition, and educational standing." An FBI affidavit describes a wiretapped conversation in which Client 9 told a call-ring booking agent that he had sent a deposit for the tryst by mail, with no return address, "same as in the past, no question about it." A delivery delay almost derailed his Feb. 13 date with Kristen. The money finally arrived, however, and the transaction continued. One of the club's booking agents told Kristen that she had heard that the client "would ask you to do things that, like, you might not think were safe," according to the affidavit. Kristen replied: "I have a way of dealing with that. . . . I'd be like, 'Listen, dude, you really want the sex?' " The client allegedly paid for Kristen to take a train from New York to Washington, where he was staying that evening. Transporting prostitutes across state lines is a felony under the 1910 federal Mann Act. The FBI intercepted calls and text messages in which Client 9 promised to leave his hotel door open so Kristen could enter without having to ask the front desk for a key. He assured the booking agent that he would pay her cab fare and hotel minibar charges and asked for a reminder about Kristen's looks. The agent told him she was American and "very pretty," at 5 feet, 5 inches and 105 pounds. Tags: Partiot Radio News Hour Tuesday March 11 2008 grassroots outreach news |

"If the Fed had not stepped in, we would have had pandemonium," said James Melcher, president of the New York hedge fund Balestra Capital. "There was the risk of a total meltdown at the beginning of last week. Patriot Radio News Hour - March 18,2008:Helicopter Ben ! pt2 http://www.allamericangold.com/ China Increases Bank Reserve Ratio to Cool Inflation March 18 (Bloomberg) -- China told banks to set aside more reserves for the second time this year, hours after Premier Wen Jiabao said the government will take ``forceful'' steps to damp inflation at an 11-year high. Lenders must place a record 15.5 percent of deposits with the central bank, up from 15 percent previously, the People's Bank of China said in a statement on its Web site today. The increase will take effect on March 25. China will tackle soaring prices with ``appropriate and forceful'' measures, Wen said at his annual press conference at the end of the National People's Congress in Beijing. Stocks tumbled the most in seven weeks on concern China's battle against inflation will slow the economy, which expanded 11.2 percent in the fourth quarter. ``Raising the reserve ratio is just a mild start'' for the government that was appointed yesterday, said Wang Tao, head of economics and strategy for Greater China at Bank of America Corp. in Beijing. ``A series of monetary tightening measures, including interest rate increases and stricter lending controls will be gradually rolled out.'' Central bank Governor Zhou Xiaochuan signaled today he may raise interest rates just as the U.S. is poised to cut them to stave off a recession. The central bank has held off on raising interest rates this year after six increases in 2007 that pushed the one-year lending rate to a nine-year high of 7.47 percent. Snowstorms Stoke Inflation Consumer prices rose 8.7 percent in February from a year earlier after the worst snowstorms in half a century paralyzed transport systems and destroyed crops. China's benchmark CSI 300 Index plunged 5.1 percent to the lowest in eight months in Shanghai. The index has slumped 30 percent this year on concern that a housing crisis would push the U.S. economy, China's biggest market, into a recession. The Federal Reserve may later today lower its overnight lending rate by a full percentage point to prevent a meltdown in financial markets as subprime woes breed widening losses among banks and securities firms. Wen today didn't comment on calls for faster yuan appreciation that some economists argue may help ease inflation by making imports cheaper. ``We need to weigh the pros and cons when adopting policies, as interest rate and currency policy each have advantages and disadvantages,'' he said. Yuan Gains The yuan rose to the highest since the end of its peg to the dollar on speculation a rate cut by the Fed would widen the yield advantage for Chinese-currency assets. The yuan advanced to 7.0815 per dollar at 5:30 p.m. in Shanghai, compared with a close of 7.0830 yesterday. Patriot Radio News Hour - 1/4/08 :Coming Economic Crash PT 2 Eric and Joe are on tap this Friday, reporting more bad news for the economy,as the Dow slides some 200 points this morning. Another 24,000 retail jobs were cut last month and because of layoffs in banks, lending institutions and on Wall Street, the stock prices are temporarily buoyed to keep investors 'happy' which is the first concern of any publicly traded company. We're in for a rough year because the Wall Street boys who see the handwriting on the wall, understand that the Fed doesn't know what it is doing with regard to tweaking the economy, or simple is out of touch and doesn't understand what really going on. . . . "They know NOTHING!". Inflation is already running rampant with wheat and soy beans up some 75% last year, and another 3%+ in one day (Jan 2008). Add the price of oil hovering at $100. barrel and the result will hit the pocketbooks of every American. If dollar were stable at 2001 levels, oil would be selling for about $31. barrel. Car manufactures reported down sales numbers for 2007 and expect even worse for 2008. Foreclosures were up dramatically in 2007, over 2006 numbers, and 2008 will prove to be even worse for the real estate debacle. Builders are selling undeveloped property at .20 on the dollar just to get cash flowing again, and guess who's buying? - Foreigners are buying US real property and business with our own worth less dollars. . . dumping dollars and walking away with real value and ownership in the good old US of A. Now, that's becoming the American way. Buy Gold & Silver - legal lawful tender. You may need it to buy groceries one of these days. Patriot Radio News Hour - 3/20/2008 : Don't Panic ! pt 1 http://www.allamericangold.com/ Dollar Rises Against Euro, Yen as Oil, Commodity Prices Decline By Agnes Lovasz March 20 (Bloomberg) -- The dollar rose to its strongest in a week against the euro as speculation a global economic slowdown will reduce demand for raw materials pushed gold and oil lower. The European common currency declined after Credit Suisse Group said it may have a loss this quarter because of writedowns on debt securities. The dollar climbed to the highest level in more than a week versus the currencies of its major trade partners as crude dropped after a U.S. government report showed weaker demand for fuel. ``The main driver is the liquidation of long commodity positions, specifically crude oil,'' said Lee Hardman, a currency strategist in London at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd. ``That's potentially been a positive for the dollar on the back of the drop in commodity prices.'' The dollar advanced to $1.5451 per euro as of 11:01 a.m. in London, the strongest since March 12, from $1.5626 yesterday in New York. It gained 1 percent to 99.85 yen, from 99.03 yesterday. The European common currency traded at 154.32 from 154.80. The U.S. Dollar Index traded on ICE Futures in New York, which compares the currency to those of six trading partners, rose for a third day, to 72.441, the highest since March 12, from 72.144 yesterday. The gauge fell to a record 70.698 on March 17, when the dollar slumped to $1.5903 per euro, the lowest level since the European currency's debut in 1999. The euro also weakened after a report showed today growth in Europe's service and manufacturing industries slowed more than economists forecast. Slower Growth A preliminary estimate of Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc's composite index fell to 51.9 in March from 52.8 in February, Reuters Plc reported. Economists expected 52.4, according to the median of 14 forecasts in a Bloomberg News survey. A reading above 50 indicates expansion. The 15-nation euro declined after European Central Bank council members Yves Mersch and Guy Quaden said yesterday financial-market turbulence caused by the U.S. housing slump will last longer than expected, weighing on Europe's economy. Writedowns of $2.65 billion, which were deliberately mispriced by traders, will be spread over the fourth quarter and first three months of 2008, Zurich-based Credit Suisse Group said today in an e-mailed statement. Gold headed for its biggest weekly drop in 25 years, plunging 12 percent from its record $1,032.70 an ounce. Oil fell below $100 a barrel for the first time since March 5, and copper had its biggest two-day decline in seven months. Patriot Radio News Hour -1/7/08:Merrill Lynch & David Walker http://www.allamericangold.com/ Eric and Joe in the saddle today riding herd on the news of the economy which is officially, as of today, in RECESSION. Merrill Lynch was the first to announce the dreaded 'R' word, but that's nothing new to most Americans. Washington D.C. doesn't have a clue about the scope of the problems in the economy, let alone answers to fix it, which they cannot. Only way out is to inflate out of the mess, but that still won't work. Printing enough money to pay for everything spent irresponsibly over the last 20 years + is no answer. David Walker, comptroller of the currency, is sounding the alarm to the public because the officials in Washington, and power brokers in financial circles refuse to listen. Walker is exposing big numbers and they are all bad. the US needs to wake up before it's too late (maybe is really IS too late) and living beyond our means is the culprit. Interesting audio clip with more details in podcast. Rate of inflation is higher than the 10 -yr note and more job cuts are becoming a way of life in the big city. Motorolla chops another 1600 jobs with a total of 7500 in the offing. Yep, we're in a recession - but is that going to slip into the 'D' word, as in 1929? Time to buy gold for a little preservation of what's left of your nest egg. Tags: Patriot Radio News Hour Merrill Lynch David Walker Alan Greenspan Federal Reserve Bank IMF Gold Ron Paul |
