Sh'ma Kolenu - Kol Nidre Service - Dorothea Fayne Live performance of the Jewish prayer - Sh'ma Kolenu - sung "a capella" by Dorothea Fayne (Mezzo-Soprano) at the Heilandskirche in Berlin. The paintings of Peter Becker from Berlin - Pankow are seen in the background. The prayer -- Shemah Kolenu -- is part of the daily "Selichot Service" of the Jewish people. The word -- Selichot -- comes from the Hebrew word -- Salach -- which means "fogiveness." Every day of the year, except on the Sabbath and on the Jewish New Year -- Rosh Hashanah - these prayers of forgiveness (including Shemah Kolenu) are recited in the Jewish liturgy. On Yom Kippur -- the most holy day of the year for the Jewish people -- the Ark (where the Torah is kept) is opened for the entire recitation of the Selichot Service. The people, who are able to stand, do so for the entire service. Sometimes this service may last as long as one hour long. The composers of these supplications of the Selichot Service are among the most notable of Talmudic times. The central message of the Selichot Service lie in the thirteen attributes of "Divine Mercy." In other words, in accordance with Jewish tradition each sin committed by a person can actually be removed by an equal "good deed." Therefore, no sin (according to Jewish Law) is unforgivable, since G-d is greater than any sin that mankind is capable of committing. During this prayer -- Shemah Kolenu -- the Ark is opened and the entire congregation stands. The cantor sings with fervour and passion these words: ENGLISH TRANSLATION- "Hear our voice, Hashem, our G-d, have pity and compassion on us, and accept our prayer. Bring us back, Hashem, and we shall return to You, renew our days as of old. Hear our words, Hashem, perceive our thoughts. May they find favor -- the expressions of our mouth and the thoughts of our heart -- before You, Hashem, our Rock and our Redeemer. Do not cast us away from your presence, and do not take from us the spirit of your holiness. Do not cast us away in the time of old age; forsake us not when our strength does fail us. Forsake us not, Oh Hashem, our G-d; be not distant to us" Tags: Sh'ma Kolenu Shemah Selichot Jewish Prayer Josef Rosenblatt Dorothea Fayne Mezzo-Soprano Opera Kol Nidre Yom Kippur |

Yuri and Daniel Beliavsky perform Kol Nidre Yuri Beliavsky, violin and Daniel Beliavsky, piano perform Bruch's Kol Nidre at Christ & St. Stephen's Church, NYC, September 18, 2005. Yuri Beliavsky was born in Moscow, USSR in 1932. He studied violin with Professor Abraham Yampolsky and chamber music with the great Russian pianist Maria Yudina at the Gnesin State Music Institute in Moscow. Beliavsky has been a member of the Grand Symphony Orchestra of Soviet Radio and Television, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, and has taught at Jerusalem's Rubin Academy, and performed as soloist with both the Moscow Radio and the Israeli Radio. Between 1972 and 1974, he made several recordings with the Jerusalem Symphony, among them Mozart's Concerto No.3 in G-Major, K. 216, Bartok's Violin Concerto No.1, and Bruch's Kol Nidre, which was recorded just before the Yom Kippur War, during which Yuri served in the Israeli Army. Since 1975, Yuri has been with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and has been on the teaching faculty of the Music Institute of Chicago and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he has often appeared in recitals with his son, pianist Daniel Beliavsky. In 1983, Beliavsky recorded Lou Harrison's Concerto for Violin and Percussion Orchestra with the XX-Century Ensemble. In 1986-87, Beliavsky created a series of special programs for WFMR, the Classical Radio Station in Milwaukee, called "An Historical Perspective on the Art of Violin Playing since the Beginning of the Recording Era." These 33 programs were broadcast during the 1986 and 1987 seasons during prime time and were very well received. One of the highlights of these programs was the first international broadcast of a previously unknown Russian recording of ten year-old Jascha Heifetz made in 1911. Yuri Beliavsky also gives lectures on the "Art of Violin Playing." The most memorable of these lectures were given at the International Workshops in Austria and at the Gnesin Institute in Moscow, Russia. These programs are broadcast on Davidzon Radio in New York City. Yuri continues to perform actively in both Milwaukee and New York City. Kol Nidre - dedicated to Jaqueline Du Pré - Dorothea Fayne Live performance of the "Kol Nidre" sung „a capella" by Dorothea Fayne (Mezzo-Soprano) at the Heilandskirche in Berlin. The Kol Nidre is a Jewish prayer that is sung three times on the eve of the holiest day of the year, according to Jewish tradition - Yom Kippur. Talmudic sources explain that this prayer is the moment, when an individual asks for Divine forgiveness for being unable to fulfil the oaths that were made that year to the Lord himself. In Jewish tradition this is viewed as being even more serious than the oaths that have been left unfulfilled between people. The Kol Nidre prayer is recited by the Chazzan of the synagogue or by one of the two men, who are standing beside him. It serves as a formal declaration that the holiday -Yom Kippur- has officially begun and that all Jews should be allowed to join in the services no matter how grave may have been any of their transgressions. Here is an English translation of the Hebrew text: "All vows, prohibitions, oaths, consecrations, konam-vows (korban HEBREW; sacrifice or offering ENGLISH), konas-vows (the HEBREW substitute for G-d's name), or equivalent terms, that we may vow, swear, consecrate, or prohibit upon ourselves from Yom Kippur that passed until this Yom Kippur, and from this Yom Kippur until the Yom Kippur in the world to come (or the next Yom Kippur), which is upon us for good. Regarding them all, we repudiate them. They all shall be undone, abandoned, cancelled, null, and void, not in force and not in effect. Our vows are no longer (valid) vows; our prohibitions are no longer (valid) prohibitions; and our oaths are no longer (valid) oaths..." (3x) Certainly, books could be written about the text of the Kol Nidre. It seems that the Kol Nidre prayer is an acknowledgement of the fact that in Judaism it is viewed that each person is held accountable for their actions (or for their passivity and inaction) during their lifetime. Through Prayer, Charity and true Repentance forgiveness from G-d can be achieved by all people. This is probably one of the main messages behind the chanting of the Kol Nidre prayer. This performance has been dedicated to Jaqueline Du Pre - one of the greatest cellists ever to have lived. The Chassidic Kaddish - Kol Nidre Service - Dorothea Fayne The Chassidic Kaddish - written by Josef Rosenblatt is a surprise to the ears. Instead of the usual monotonous recitation of the Kaddish, here is a Kaddish that dances and rocks. This song is full of as many colors as the paintings of Marc Chagall!
