Oberheim Xpander programming As vintage synth dealers, we get to play with a lot of fun toys, but you already know this... I love the Oberheim Xpander! Here's me programming a patch or 2 on the next Xpander we plan to sell. I started out with Oberheim's initialized patch. Though the Xpander isn't as tweak friendly as an analog synth with 1 fader for every parameter, it's still an amazing and deep tool that can be programmed pretty quickly once you're familiar with the layout. Enjoy, and email me anytime at minime123@onebox.com PS A few people criticized how I was handling this Xpander on a forum. This was my reply to them: -i remember one time when my mother took her car in to the mechanic's. she handed him the keys so he could take it for a test drive. she almost had a heart attack when he floored it, cause that car had never gone that fast with her at the wheel. she didnt understand what he was doing, and had a similar reaction to some people here. i knew EXACTLY what he was doing - you generally find more problems when you push a machine. so... -im intentionally a bit rough with pots and buttons when i test items that are going up for sale because i want to be sure everythings in proper working order and is going to perform well for whoever buys it, whether they have a gentle touch, or a "not-so-gentle" touch. xpander encoders, which are known to go bad (and are also designed to click loudly, as you can hear), can respond differently at different speeds, so i test them both slowly and quickly. i didnt want to bore you guys to death with a slow version cause i cant stand sitting there for 10 minutes watching something that could have been accomplished in 2, and i wouldnt want to put you through such torture either. :) plus, my camera stops recording videos after around 3 minutes. also, before i bought my 1st xpander, i thought it was going to be relatively slow to program without a knob for every feature and i wanted to show people thats not the case if you know your way around it. i actually made a few bad button pushes there because i was trying to move quicker than usual. -i have owned and used more than 1 xpander heavily for the last 15 years and havent had a single problem or gotten a single scratch on them since ive had them. plus, im not as "rough" with them in the studio. so, to those who are concerned that im abusing this (or any other) synth, dont be cause im not. you guys might be used to decrepit old crap that falls apart when you look at it, but the stuff we sell is usually much better off, because we put it to the test and fix any functional issues we try our hardest to discover. -as for rubbing off any print, oberheim already took care of that. theres actually a layer of material (im not sure what it is - translucent plastic?) above all the graphics. though this material itself doesnt look very good scratched up. -anyway, thanks for the concern. we would never do anything to harm any synths. in fact, we have turned down guaranteed sales because we didnt like the buyers plans for our babies (heavy road use of a pristine instrument, an "art project" where the instrument would essentially be put to death, etc). so relax, people! :) Tags: oberheim expander xp1 xp-1 xpander matrix-12 vintage synthesizer synth keyboard module moog sequential circuits prophet |

Before Nortec Collective and Latinsizer / moog/oberheim/seq Back in 1988-1996 in Tijuana( US-Mexico Border) i was involved in diferent industrial, Noise Electronic Local Acts before i started with "Nortec Collective"(1999). At the same time i was working with Ramon Bostich to do an Ambient Noise Music Duo with a more analog synth touch, this poject called "Monithor" wich later become Latinsizer as a solo alias, this footage i founded in lost tapes from back in 1996, this video was taken at Monterrey city at an abandoned wharehouse from 1905 before it become a cultural park today (Parque Fundidora), Ramon and i did a total Analog Synth live set there in 1996 using using a couple of Moog Synths, Oberheims, analog sequencers and modified drum machines. enjoy De 1988 a 1996 estuve involucrado en varias agrupaciones de música electrónica post-industrial en Tijuana antes de empezar con el "Colectivo Nortec"(1999). Some may say so... An even cheaper version of this synth was made by Realistic (known as the Concertmate MG-1). The Rogue has a decent Moog filter with an external input and syncable VCO's. Still it does have its limitations in design and synthesis capabilities. Very basic and easy to use, the Rogue is an inexpensive place to get good Moog sounds! It is very similar in fact, to the Moog Taurus which is a bass pedal synthesizer system. Unfortunately the Rogue shows no sign of MIDI or patch memory. It is used by Peter Gabriel, Add N To (X), 808 State, Latinsizer, Stereolab, Mr. Oizo and KMFDM. MOOG SOURCE Moog's Source was their first to offer patch memory storage as well as some other new features. It boasted 16 memory locations so you could finally save and recall your synth patches. A casette-tape jack was also implemented to transfer your patches to and from an external tape and free up the on-board memory for additional new patches. But in an effort to modernize with the eighties, the Moog had replaced all buttons, knobs and sliders with flat-panel membrane buttons and a single data-wheel assignment format. At the time, this may have seemed far-out, but in all actuality it is the Source's downfall. Parameters are edited not with hands-on sliders and knobs but by assigning a selected parameter to the dedicated data wheel. This is very tedious and does not allow for true hands-on tweaking during performances nor can you adjust different parameters simultaneously or while playing. These days, the membrane buttons don't always seem to work quite right either. However, those famous monophonic Moog sounds are still inside this synth which has two fat analog oscillators and the legendary 24 dB Moog filter. The Source has been used by Tangerine Dream, Jan Hammer, Depeche Mode, Devo, Vince Clarke, New Order, Ultravox, Josh Wink, Front Line Assembly, Moog Cookbook, Kitaro, Imperial Drag, The Cars, Phish, The Rentals, King Crimson, Blur, and Gary Numan. OBERHEIM MATRIX 6 The Matrix 6R is the Matrix 6 without a keyboard, retaining its membrane programming interface. Oberheim later produced the Matrix 1000, which is essentially 1000 patches from the Matrix 6 in a 1-unit rack-module, preset and editable only through SysEx. For professional studio work or live on stage, both the Matrix 6 keyboard and rack-mount are excellent and versatile synths that make a great source of bright and punchy sounds, vintage analog pads, textures and ambient sounds. It is used by Orbital Apollo 440, Jimmy Edgar, Philip Glass, The Grid, Future Sound of London, Astral Projection, Latinsizer, The Shamen, Mouse on Mars, Tangerine Dream and Cirrus. bostich y fussible Tags: drum machine circuit bend tr-606 analog sequencer synth modular moog oberheim tr909 latinsizer nortec tijuana pepe mogt |

Oberheim Matrix-12 Demo This is an Oberheim Matrix-12 vintage analog polysynth, it is my personal favorite synth ever. Basses, strings, super-thick pads. Worth every red cent. Sound for this video was recorded into Cubase SX3 through an E-mu 1616M audio interface. Absolutely no effects were added. Probably half of the patches programmed by me! This demo is guerrilla style with mostly noodling - no rehearsing whatsoever - can you tell? So please take it easy with the comments....after all I spared you guys the Van Halen Jump riff the obies are famous for. Alas, maybe I make a better vid later. Oberheim DX Hip-Hop Demo (The Old School Art of Beat Making) Next to Roland's TR-808, the Oberheim DX and DMX are classic Hip-Hop drum machines. The Oberheim DX differed from the 808 in that it used actual drum samples rather than synthetic sounds. Released in 1984, the DX has found its way into too many tracks to mention in hip-hop, dance, rock, and pop music. The machine's bigger brother, the DMX, provided the moniker for old school producer Davy DMX (not to be confused with rapper DMX, who claims his acronym stands for "Dark Man X.") If you're from the old school you know these sounds, and you love them.
