Orphaned Sea Otter Pup Abby, a California sea otter pup, is cared for by Mark Bressler, senior animal care specialist at SeaWorld San Diego. The Santa Barbara Marine Mammal Center found the otter stranded and near comatose on Jalama Beach, north of Santa Barbara, Calif., on July 21 and brought it to SeaWorld for rehabilitation. The female pup, which was estimated to be less than a week old when rescued, is being bottle-fed around the clock at SeaWorld and weighs approximately four pounds. When the young otter was rescued, she was dehydrated, hypoglycemic, having difficulty maintaining her body temperature and weighed about three pounds (sea otter pups weigh between three and five pounds at birth). At first, the otter was too weak to nurse and had to be tube-fed. Animal care specialists eventually were able to get her to drink from a bottle. The otter pup is showing signs of progress, including nursing from a bottle regularly, and maintaining a normal body temperature of 99 to 100 degrees F. The California sea otter is listed as a threatened species by U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Threats include oil spills, entanglement in fishing nets and disease. The three California sea otters now on display at SeaWorld's Rocky Point Preserve were originally stranded and rescued as part of the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Sea Otter Research and Conservation (SORAC) Program. Since 1965, SeaWorld San Diego has rescued thousands of animals and has treated as many as 475 marine mammals in one year. On top of that it is neither a 'hunt' nor a 'harvest' (seals are NOT fish, everyone knows that - do they look like fish to you !?! ) - its a cruel, unethical, inhumane, barbaric & unnecessary SLAUGHTER of totally helpless, defenceless & intelligent BABY marine MAMMALS for their FUR (understand that humans are biologically classified as 'mammals' too). All that stuff about seals eating all the cod has been proven to be complete bullshit too & is another UNjustified reason. It is scientific fact that seals actually keep the ecosystem alive through what they eat & cod only accounts for about 3 % of their diet. Its already been a very bad year for the seals as it is - IFAW.org has predicted a 100% mortality rate for seal pups born this year (due to poor ice conditions from global warming, thousands have already drowned or died immediately after birth). They need to be PROTECTED - *not* exterminated! BTW - Despite what some ignorant folk on here may say, yes it IS a slaughter of defenseless & helpless BABY seals. As soon as they begin to shed their fluffy white coat — as young as 12 DAYS old — these BABY seals can be 'legally' hunted by sealers (and just because its 'legal' it doesn't make it morally/ethically 'right' either). In fact most of the seals killed are only 2-WEEKS to 3 months old; 97 percent of the seals killed over the past three years have been LESS than 3 months old with the majority being JUST a FEW WEEKS old i.e THEY'RE BABIES! At the time of slaughter, many of these pups have not yet eaten their first solid meal or taken their first swim. Sealers (the seal killers) prefer to kill BABY seals because their skins are in "prime" condition and fetch the highest prices. Wild Baby Otter Pup and Mom! Wow, a rare view of a day old wild otter pup and his mom in a protected tide pool outside the Monterey Bay Aquarium...with schoolkids crowding the railing looking down, visitors ooohed and ahhed at how impossibly cute this fluff-puff took a baby swim, paddling and eeking loudly with excitement as mommy washed herself off. Taking a nap in the calm warm pool, mommy otter cuddled, groomed and caressed her newborn babe who snuggled deep into it's mom's warm neck. Later, mom got hungry and, using her rudder-like tail, swam towards the waterfall exit, slipped baby down the slide, and went into the wintery waters in search of food. Sea otter pup befriends kayaker During a trip to Elkhorn Slough, California, a young sea otter noticed my kayak and spent the next 10 minutes playing around and then just left. As a note, please don't feed the otters. This pup was tagged, and was probably looking for food. As you can see, they tend to get dependent on humans. I won't even touch them.
