The Pentangle - Cruel Sister - 1/6 The Pentangle Cruel Sister (1970) 1. A Maid That's Deep in Love (traditional) I am a maid that's deep in love But, yes, I can complain I have in this world but one true love And Jimmy is his name And if I do not find my love I'll morn most constantly And I'll find and follow Jimmy thro' The lands of liberty Then I'll put up my yellow hair Men's clothing I'll wear on I'll sign to a bold sea captain My passage I'll work free And I'll find and follow Jimmy thro' The lands of liberty One night upon the raging sea As we were going to bed The captain cried farewell my boy I wish you were a maid Your rosy cheeks, your rosy lips They are enticing me And I wish dear God with all my heart A maid you were to me Then hold your tongue dear captain Such talk is all in vain And if, and the sailors find it out They'll laugh and make much game For when we reach Columbia shore Some prettier girls you'll find And you'll laugh and sing and court with them For courting you are inclined It was not three days after Our ship it reached the shore Adieu my loving captain Adieu for evermore For once I was a sailor on sea But now I'm a maid on the shore So adieu to you and all your crew With you I'll sail no more Come back, come back my own pretty maid Come back and marry me I have ten thousand pounds in gold And that I'll give to thee So come back, come back my own pretty maid Come back and marry me Jacqui McShee Bert Jansch John Renbourn Terry Cox Danny Thompson Photo: Giulio Pili (1872-1950) Tags: jazz rock |

The Pentangle - Cruel Sister - 2/6 The Pentangle Cruel Sister (1970) 2. When I Was in My Prime (traditional) When I was in my prime I flourished like a vine There came along a false young man Come stole the heart of mine Come stole the heart of mine The gardener standing by Three offers he gave to me The pink, the violet, and red rose Which I refused all three Which I refused all three The pink's no flower at all For it fades away too soon And the violet is too pale a hue I think I'll wait 'til June I think I'll wait 'til June In June the red rose blooms That's not the flower for me For then I'll pluck the red rose off And plant a willow tree And plant a willow tree And the willow tree shall weep And the willow tree shall whine I wish I was in the young man's arms That won the heart of mine That won the heart of mine If I'm spared for one year more And God should grant me grace I'll weep a bowl of crystal tears And wash his deceitful face And wash his deceitful face Jacqui McShee Bert Jansch John Renbourn Terry Cox Danny Thompson Photo: Giulio Pili (1872-1950) Tags: jazz rock folk |

The Pentangle - Cruel Sister - 3/6 The Pentangle Cruel Sister (1970) 3. Lord Franklin (traditional) It was homeward bound one night on the deep Swinging in my hammock I fell asleep I dreamed a dream and I thought it true Concerning Franklin and his gallant crew With one hundred seamen he sailed away To the frozen ocean in the month of May To seek that passage around the pole Where we poor seamen do sometimes go Through cruel hardships they mainly strove Their ships on mountains of ice was drove Only the Eskimo with his skin canoe Was the only one who ever came through In Baffin's Bay where the whale fish blow The fate of Franklin no man may know The fate of Franklin no tongue can tell Lord Franklin among his sailors do dwell And now my burden it gives me pain For my long lost Franklin I'd cross the main Ten thousand pounds I would freely give To say on earth that my Franklin do live Jacqui McShee Bert Jansch John Renbourn Terry Cox Danny Thompson Photo: Giulio Pili (1872-1950) Tags: jazz rock folk |

The Pentangle - Cruel Sister - 4/6 The Pentangle Cruel Sister (1970) 4. Cruel Sister (traditional) There lived a lady by the North Sea shore (Lay the bent to the bonnie broom) Two daughters were the babes she bore (Fa la la la la la la la la la) As one grew bright as in the sun So coal black grew the elder one A knight came riding to the lady's door He'd travelled far to be their wooer He courted one with gloves and rings But loved the other above all things Oh sister will you go with me To watch the ships sail on the sea? She took her sister by the hand And led her down to the North Sea strand And as they stood on the windy shore The dark girl threw her sister o'er Sometimes she sank, sometimes she swam Crying sister reach to me your hand Oh sister, sister let me live And all that's mine I'll surely give It's your own truelove that I'll have and more But thou shalt never come ashore And there she floated like a swan The salt sea bore her body on Two minstrels walked along the strand And saw the maiden float to land They made a harp of her breast bone Whose sound would melt a heart of stone They took three locks of her yellow hair And with them strung the harp so rare They went into her father's hall To play the harp before them all But as they laid it on a stone The harp began to play alone The first string sang a doleful sound The bride her younger sister drowned The second string as that they tried In terror sits the black-haired bride The third string sang beneath their bow And surely now her tears will flow Jacqui McShee Bert Jansch John Renbourn Terry Cox Danny Thompson Photo: Giulio Pili (1872-1950) Tags: jazz rock folk |

Pentangle at Harrogate International Centre July 10th 2008 Snippets from a very enjoyable concert. Some info about Pentangle from MySpace..... "For six relentlessly active years spanning 1967-73 British folk/jazz 'supergroup' Pentangle were one of the most exciting and innovative groups in the world, genuinely pushing boundaries and exploring new musical avenues. The band was formed in 1967 by hip young guitar slingers Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, already leading lights of the folk scene at the time thanks to their startlingly innovative songs and guitar playing. John added extraordinary vocalist Jacqui McShee, an established singer on the traditional circuit, along with hugely experienced and talented jazz rhythm section Danny Thompson (acoustic bass) and Terry Cox (drums). The two had originally performed together in Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated and with numerous well-known names on the London jazz scene. With their unique jazz/folk fusion Pentangle quickly became both stars of the underground and darlings of the mainstream. From humble beginnings at the Horseshoe Hotel in Tottenham Court Road, the heart of swinging '60s London, Pentangle's first concert appearance as a band was at The Royal Festival Hall on May 27 1967. They went on to enjoy an unprecedented degree of success worldwide for an acoustic band, performing regularly at The Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, The Fillmore East (alongside Canned Heat and Rhinoceros), The Fillmore West (alongside The Grateful Dead), Newport Folk Festival and two Isle of Wight Festivals -- amongst many other prestigious shows. Pentangle's eponymous debut album was released in May 1968 on Transatlantic and they went on to record four more classic albums for the label. The live disc of their seminal double album Sweet Child was recorded at The Royal Festival Hall in London on June 29 1968 and the album (one live disc and one studio disc) appeared in November 1968. Their third album, Basket of Light, was released in October 1969 and contained their hit single 'Light Flight' which was the theme tune for the BBC's hugely popular series Take Three Girls. Basket of Light was followed by Cruel Sister in November 1970 and Reflection in October 1971, before the band signed to Reprise for 1972's Solomon's Seal. This proved to be the last album from the original line up who played their final UK shows in November of that year. Rumours of the group splitting up surfaced in January and were confirmed by the spring of 1973. Pentangle's influence and musical impact is still revered and relevant today, as evidenced by the critical and commercial acclaim for The Time Has Come -- the lavish and definitive four CD box set released in March 2007 (which is both a gloriously accessible 'best of' for the curious and a treasure trove of lost gems for the faithful) -- and Pentangle's BBC Radio 2 Lifetime Achievement Award presented in February 2007 at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards by Sir David Attenborough -- as well as by legions of young emulators and self-confessed disciples on the current music scene. "The Folk Beatles...The greatest and most adventurous acoustic 'supergroup' of their time" -- The Word (April 2007) "Pentangle still rule the roost" -- The Times (9 February 2007) "Pentangle revolutionised 60s music" -- MOJO (April 2007) "The godfathers of English folk music...unquestionably the core template for today's blooming nu-folk scene" -- Metro (23 March 2007) "Pentangle was electrifying, particularly at a time of unprecedented free thinking in music. Together they created an intoxicating instrumental force" -- Jazzwise (April 2007) "One of the most experimental and influential bands of the Sixties" -- The Sun (23 February 2007) "Pentangle rewrote the Britfolk rulebook...America has nothing to match them" -- The Daily Mirror (9 March 2007) "Britain's Grateful Dead" -- The Guardian (16 March 2007)" Tags: folk Renbourn McShee Cox Jansch Thompson concert |
