Henry Purcell Concert of Orff's Iranian young girls in Tehran Henry Purcell Last year I was in Iran for an exhibition project in Iran. It was also third time that I visited my family after I left this country. Arghawan, my niece told me that she is learning violoncello. I was very surprised and I find it fantastic not joust because of that in my family a girl is doing something special but also that in Iran young girls cannot do everything what they want. I Iran some music collages work with Carl Orff' system for learning music for children. She is playing in a big Carl Orff's orchestra. The children of this group are in age between 5 and 16. She invited me for a concert of her class. Unfortunately it was not permitted to take pictures or movies. I tried with my digital camera and control tried to keep my camera. Anyway I got a short shooting. I would like share this moment of my enjoyment with everyone. You should remember that the point of this movie is that in Iran girls has not possibly like the girls in Western or any free countries. I don't like speak about politic in my blog, but we can not forget it that Mullah's regime are doing all for stop activities like this in Iran, particularly for girls. I hope you will enjoy this like me. Tags: Iranian Girls Music Concert Malek Henry Purcell |

Purcell O Solitude, Z 406 - James Bowman Henry Purcell (1658/9-1695) "O solitude, my sweetest choice", Z. 406, published 1684/5. Note before beginning: The original score suppposed to be in C minor, whereas the only score I found is in B-flat minor and this recording I have in F# minor. Sorry you guys out there who claim to have absolute pitch. All I can suggest is, just close your eyes and try to enjoy it. Henry Purcell (1659-1695), English Baroque composer. He has often been called England's finest native composer. Purcell incorporated Italian and French stylistic elements but devised a peculiarly English style of Baroque music. The text of the powerful O solitude, my sweetest choice is a translation of a poem by Antoine Girard de Saint-Amant (1594-1661) , "La solitude". Thanslation is by Katherine Philips, known as "Orinda" as she called herself. It appeared in the fourth book of the anthology The Theater of Music in 1686. The ground bass was not new when Purcell began composing; in fact, it was somewhat old-fashioned. He may have used the device as often as he did because he found it challenging. Repeated bass patterns, especially if they are diatonic, limit the harmonic exploration of a piece, and Purcell succeeded in breaking through this barrier on many occasions, most successfully in O solitude. In other songs, such as "Now that the sun hath veiled his light" and "Music for a while", Purcell transposes the ground bass in order to modulate. More on Katherine Philips and her poetry: http://www.jimandellen.org/orinda.ordering.poems.html and on the original poem bt Saint-Amant with Philips' translation: http://www.jimandellen.org/womenspoetry/solitude.html Text: O solitude, my sweetest choice! Places devoted to the night, Remote from tumult and from noise, How ye my restless thoughts delight! O solitude, my sweetest choice! O heav'ns! what content is mine To see these trees, which have appear'd From the nativity of time, And which all ages have rever'd, To look today as fresh and green As when their beauties first were seen. O, how agreeable a sight These hanging mountains do appear, Which th' unhappy would invite To finish all their sorrows here, When their hard fate makes them endure Such woes as only death can cure. O, how I solitude adore! That element of noblest wit, Where I have learnt Apollo's lore, Without the pains to study it. For thy sake I in love am grown With what thy fancy does pursue; But when I think upon my own, I hate it for that reason too, Because it needs must hinder me From seeing and from serving thee. O solitude, O how I solitude adore! Tags: Henry Purcell Solitude 406 James Bowman countertenor English Baroque |

H. Purcell - The Fairy Queen "O Let Me Weep" Sylvia McNair "O let me weep" (The Fairy Queen, Z. 629) Sylvia McNair with Vienna Concentus Musicus, Conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt (1994) Composer: Henry Purcell Librettist (Playwright): Thomas Betterton(?) Libretto: http://opera.stanford.edu/Purcell/FairyQueen/libretto.html Source: William Shakespeare's comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream First performance: Dorset Garden, London, 1692 Voicing: Soprano solo, D minor ( she sings it a semitone lower, a common practice for Baroque music) Genre: Secular, Aria Language: English Instruments: Violin (or oboe, or possibly recorder)and continuo Published: 1689 The main source for this song is Orpheus Britannicus. The collection of songs by Henry Purcell entitled Orpheus Britannicus is in two volumes, published in 1698 and 1702 respectively. These include solo songs, duets and dialogues, and some songs for 3 voices. For more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orpheus_Britannicus The Fairy-Queen (Z.629) is a masque or semi-opera by Henry Purcell. It was first performed on May 2, 1692 at the Queen's Theatre, Dorset Garden in London by the United Company. The libretto is an anonymous adaptation of William Shakespeare's wedding comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Presumably the author or at least co-author of the libretto is Thomas Betterton, the manager of Dorset Garden Theatre with whom Purcell worked regularly. This assumption is based on an analysis of Betterton's stage directions. A collaboration between several playwrights is also feasible. Choreography for the various dances was provided by Josias Priest, who also worked on Dioclesian and King Arthur, and who was associated with Dido and Aeneas. Purcell did not set any of Shakespeare's text to music; instead he composed music for short masques in every act but the first. The play itself was also slightly modernized in keeping with seventeenth-century dramatic conventions, but in the main the spoken text is as Shakespeare wrote it. The masques are related to the play metaphorically, rather than literally. Many critics have stated erroneously that they bear no relationship to the play, but recent scholarship has shown that the opera, which ends with a masque featuring Hymen, the God of Marriage, was actually composed for the fifteenth wedding anniversary of William and Mary. A letter describing the original performance shows that the parts of Titania and Oberon were played by children of eight or nine.Presumably other fairies were also played by children, which changes our perspective of the staging. The Plaint O, let me Weep! is part of the masque in Act V of Purcell's The Fairy Queen, where Juno appears and sings first the Epithalamium Thrice happy lovers, and then The Plaint. Peter Holman suggests that the quality and the range of the obbligato instrument indicate a recorder, rather than the violin: if this were so it would be the only instance in Purcell's works of his writing for a single recorder. Clifford Bartlett in his edition of the Fairy Queen suggests violin or oboe as the appropriate instrument. Some of the others who recorded this aria: Alfred Deller Emma Kirkby Jennifer Vyvyan Catherine Bott Kym Amps Nancy Argenta O let me weep, for ever weep, My Eyes no more shall welcome Sleep; I'll hide me from the sight of Day, And sigh, and sigh my Soul away. He's gone, he's gone, his loss deplore; And I shall never see him more. Tags: Henry Purcell Fairy Queen Let Me Weep Sylvia McNair English Baroque soprano Harnoncourt |
