Dryad: A general-purpose distributed execution platform Google Tech Talks November, 1 2007 ABSTRACT Web search has generated the need and economic support for a new class of data-intensive supercomputing applications. Several computing platforms have been created to support this need: the first described in the literature is Google's MapReduce. I will describe the architecture of the Dryad system developed at Microsoft Research, and explain some of our design choices. Dryad allows more general computations than MapReduce, and has consequently been used as a middleware abstraction on which higher-level programming models can be implemented. I will also briefly discuss some of these. Speaker: Michael Isard Michael Isard started out as a computer vision researcher, but has gradually been lured into systems research by his colleagues, first at DEC/Compaq SRC and now at Microsoft Research Silicon Valley. He was closely involved in the design and implementation of the first version of Microsoft's in-house search engine, and his systems research subsequently has concentrated on programming models for parallel and distributed computing. Using YouTube with a Purpose - Helping Kids in Bangladesh "This is probably the coolest thing that has ever happened to me." - Hank Green If it wasn't for YouTube, I couldn't have done this. It's thanks to YouTube that I was able to team up with Rick Davis - an American school teacher in Bangladesh who got in contact with me after finding one of my videos on YouTube. He helped pay and plan this trip this rural village in a military-controlled and malaria heavy part of Bangladesh. Abdur Raheem Green - Meaningful Mankind, The Purpose of Life Abdur Rahim Green talks about the purpose of life under the topic "Meaningful Mankind, The Islamic Definition". Born in Dar-es-salaam in Tanzania to British parents, Green's father (born in England), Gavin Green, was a colonial administrator in the then extant British Empire. At an early age he moved back to the UK with his parents. His mother is of original Polish origin. At the age of 10 he attended a Roman Catholic Monastic boarding school at Gilling Castle and then went onto Ampleforth College and went on to study history in the London University. However, he left his education unfinished in an effort to devote himself to Islamic works. He became dissatisfied with Christianity at the age of 8, with it not making sense to him. Green researched and practiced many religions, including Buddhism (for 3 years) before embracing Islam. Whilst in Britain his father got a job in 1976 working for Barclays Bank International and was subsequently sent to Cairo, Egypt, to set up a branch of the Bank there. His study of the Noble Qur'an immediately attracted him to Islam and he embraced Islam in 1988. He has been a Daw'ah practitioner in Britain since then. Green now works in the London Central Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre as the Visits and English Dawa Co-ordinator. Green is seen akin to lecturers such as Dr. Zakir Naik, Dr. Bilal Philips, Khalid Yasin and Yvonne Ridley, doing many lectures on Islam worldwide and also in London's famous Hyde Park, Speakers Corner. Ron Paul: "World Bank has outlived its purpose" 'Ron Paul comments on World Bank and Poverty. "Forgive and Forget" Won't Fix Third World Debt When the World Bank and International Monetary Fund spring meetings open in Washington, D.C., on April 29, 2001, officials will point proudly to the roughly $20 billion in debt that they have promised to cancel since their heavily-protested meetings last year. These promises take a step in the right direction, concludes a new report from the Worldwatch Institute, a Washington-based research organization. But even full cancellation would only be a Band-Aid for a broken system. "Before officials congratulate themselves they need to pay attention to a wider problem-how to prevent this debt crisis from happening again," said David Malin Roodman, author of Still Waiting for the Jubilee: Pragmatic Solutions for the Third World Debt Crisis. "Hundreds of billions of dollars in unpayable loans still need to be written off. And creditors have done little to change the lending practices that created the debt problem in the first place." "For example, initiatives to cut debt in Tanzania from $5.7 billion to about $1.8 billion are welcome, but unless things change, the country will probably borrow enough to lift its debt back to $6 billion by 2018. It's not enough to clean up past mistakes. We also need to learn from them. 'Forgive and forget' is a recipe for more debt troubles." Roodman calls for major reforms to prevent poorer countries from sinking back into debt. On the borrower side, these include making governments less corrupt and more accountable. On the creditor side, the reforms include:? "Unfortunately, many official lenders seem trapped in a fortress mentality, so fearful of admitting their mistakes by openly canceling failed loans that they are prolonging the debt crisis," said Roodman. "In a sort of money merry-go-round, rich governments, the IMF, the World Bank, and other official lenders are granting poor countries new loans to repay old ones. For every dollar they lend to low-income nations they get 83 cents right back in principal and interest payments. This makes bad loans look good and hides the full extent of failure." Through the enhanced Debt Initiative for Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC initiative), announced at the 1999 G-7 summit in Cologne, official creditors took a step toward ending the debt crisis in 41 of the poorest nations, offering to cancel far more debt than they had before.'
