Radio Telescope Array Dedicated to Astronomy, 10/11/07 UC Berkeley and the SETI Institute (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) dedicated a new-concept radio telescope devoted to galactic astronomy and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. NRAO 40ft Radio Telescope - SARA Convention 2005 The National Radio Astronomy Observatory's (NRAO) 40ft educational telescope at Green Bank, West Virginia. This telescope is used by schools and their student groups for educational field trips to the observatory. Members of the Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers (SARA) also use the 40ft when they have their annual convention at Green Bank. Arecibo RadioTelescope - Astronomy El radiotelescopio de Arecibo está situado en Arecibo, Puerto Rico, al norte de la isla. Está administrado por la universidad Cornell con un acuerdo de cooperación con la National Science Foundation. El observatorio funciona bajo el nombre de National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center (NAIC) aunque se utilizan oficialmente ambos nombres. El radiotelescopio fue el mayor telescopio jamás construido, hasta la construcción del RATAN-600 (Rusia) con su antena circular de 576 metros de diámetro . Recolecta datos radioastronómicos, aeronomía terrestre y radar planetaríos para los científicos mundiales. Aunque ha sido empleado para diversos usos, principalmente se usa para la observación de objetos estelares. El telescopio de Arecibo destaca por su gran tamaño: el diámetro de la antena principal es de 305 metros, construida dentro de una depresión. La antena es la antena convergente más grande y curvada del mundo, lo que le aporta una gran capacidad de recepción de ondas electromagnéticas. La superficie de la antena está formada por 38 778 láminas perforadas de aluminio; cada una mide aproximadamente 1 x 2 m, soportadas por un entramado de cables de acero. Es una antena esférica (en oposición a antena parabólica). Esta forma proviene del método utilizado para orientar el telescopio. La antena es fija pero el receptor se sitúa en su punto focal para interceptar las señales reflejadas de las diferentes direcciones por la superficie esférica. El receptor está situado sobre una plataforma de 900 toneladas suspendida 150 m en el aire por 18 cables sujetados por tres torres de hormigón armado, una de 110 m de altura y las otras dos de 80 m de altura (las cúspides de las tres torres están al mismo nivel). La plataforma posee una vía giratoria de 93 m de longitud, en forma de arco, sobre la cual se montan la antena de recepción, los reflectores secundarios y terciarios. Esto le permite al telescopio observar cualquier región del cielo en un cono de 40 grados alrededor del cenit local (entre -1 y 38 grados de declinación). A traveling ALMA radio telescope The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) is a major 21st Century radio astronomy project that will open new windows for astronomers to study the origin and evolution of our Universe. This video by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) highlights the science that ALMA will accomplish and follows the first ALMA antenna or radio telescope as it travels from the VertexRSI production facility in Kilgore, Texas, USA thru the port of Houston to the Atacama Desert of northern Chile and the ALMA site, which is in the beautiful but harsh, high-elevation Atacama Desert. The ALMA Project is a partnership between the scientific communities of East Asia, Europe, and North America with Chile.
