1996: Michael Jordan, Chicago Bulls vs. Toronto Raptors I usually like to leave game recaps up to Hoopsencyclopedia because he's "the man" for it, but I've taken it upon myself to cover a game that on the surface may not mean a lot, but underneath went on to hold it's own high-value for multiple reasons. To many young fans today, this isn't exactly a historical game - and for good reason. In the context of basketball history, not many regular season games are truly memorable, classic, or historical. But many also become classics in their own right, for records made, or for final meetings. This one has a little mix of everything - including Toronto's largest ever crowd of over 36,000 fans at the Sky Dome. In their previous meeting of the '95-'96 season Michael was the acclaimed "Raptor killer", sinking the Raptors and posting 14 fourth quarter points. In this game, he posts 36 points on 63.6% shooting (14-22) with 15 in the fourth quarter. Amazingly, 13 of his 15 fourth quarter points come in the last 4 minutes and 20 seconds of playing time. These were the games of his post-baseball career (seemingly happened a lot in 95-96) that made you wish his team wasn't as great as it was, just so you could see him continue to light it up all game long. Unfortunately, Michael never did anything that wasn't necessary. The expansion team, Toronto Raptors, face off against Michael Jordan and a Bulls team that went on to win an all time NBA record of 72 regular season wins. But what the 36,131 fans that packed the Sky Dome on this night may not realise, is that they were watching a story filled with subplots unfold upon the hardwood of a basketball court. Michael Jordan. Alvin Robertson. Damon Stoudamire. Chicago Bulls. Toronto Raptors. 72. 8. What people don't realise, though, is that the Raptors that year were actually stacked with talent that could do harm in any league of any era had they have had the correct team chemistry, confidence, and playing time required to do so. Damon Stoudamire was a rookie, who, in my opinion is one of the most underrated PG talents of our generation. In the 95-96 season, he went on to win ROY and set multiple records including a then record 133 3PT FG's for a rookie. He was also chasing second place for most assists by a rookie, on the tail of Oscar Robertson. He went on to post 19.0ppg and 9.3apg (something that the top PGs of the league today fail to do), while setting multiple franchise records for the Toronto Raptors that still stand today, including most assists by a player (19). In this game, he seemed to be having a shoot out with Steve Kerr and Michael Jordan. Damon posted 30 points, 11 assists and went 6-8 from three point land. Then there's the subplot of Michael vs. Robertson. Great friends, old team mates ('84 olympics), and fierce competitors. History has it, that this would be the last time either of the old timers would face off against each other in professional competition (Robertson retired after '96). For those of you who don't know much about Alvin Robertson, he's perhaps one of the greatest perimiter, roaming, and lock down defenders to ever play the game. He's 1st all-time in steals per game, and he has an anticipation that many see players such as Bruce Bowen to have today. It's no coincidence or conspiracy that he was named DPOY in '85-'86. While both players here are far past their athletic and statistical prime (Jordan 33, Alvin 34), they don't fail to impress and excite. Alvin plays Jordan's turnarounds like only few could; they battle hard for position and trash talk each other all night long. It's also notable that Alvin averaged 2.2 steals per game this season, which would've been good enough for first place in 06-07. Of course, Michael was no defensive slouch either ;), coincidentally averaging 2.2spg. With far too much already said... I'll leave the game to unfold. Enjoy. Allen Iverson 2001 Playoff vs Raptors (every single point) I have made this video of AI vs Vince Carter the Toronto Raptors in 2001 NBA Playoff. Every single points of Iverson is included from Game 1 to Game 7. Vince Carter versus Allen Iverson is the kind of marquee matchup the NBA has been craving since the days of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. As two of the NBA's most exciting young stars, they are dazzling spectators and TV viewers with limitless creativity and breathtaking moves in the Toronto Raptors-Philadelphia 76ers playoff series. "This matchup is great, and people are getting turned on to it," said NBA deputy commissioner Russ Granik, who was at Philadelphia's First Union Center on Wednesday night, when Iverson scored 54 points to Carter's 28 in the 76ers' 97-92 victory. "For better or worse, fans like it when you get superstars going against each other. People have been hearing about these guys for years now, but they haven't gotten this far before where they met each other at this level. That gets people interested." With the NBA's overall popularity declining and new rules designed to make the game more appealing set to take effect next season, an Iverson-Carter matchup is what the league really needed. "Watching these two kids, I don't think our league is in any trouble," 76ers coach Larry Brown said. "They really are exciting." Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens feels much the same way. "I think you are going to see more great individual matchups as the young kids we have in this league develop," he said. "We are always rushing to fix this and fix that, but maybe there is not always something wrong. The young guys have to be able to grow and make some mistakes. Let them grow up and then see what they can do. In this series, you are seeing two of the best going at each other." It is looking increasingly likely that Michael Jordan will end a three-year retirement next season and return to the NBA as a player. Carter and Iverson will be right there, eagerly awaiting that matchup. "You always want to test yourself against the best, and I would welcome the challenge," Iverson said. Said Carter of Jordan: "He set the standard we are all trying to reach." Jordan, of course, owns six championship rings and 10 scoring titles, while Carter, 24, has won nothing more than a rookie of the year award and a slam-dunk title. But Carter is one of the league's most popular players among fans, the leading vote-getter for the past two NBA All-Star Games. Iverson, 25, won his second scoring title this season and is favored to win this season's most valuable player award, as well. And while Iverson and Carter are going head to head, other young stars such as Milwaukee's Ray Allen, the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant, San Antonio's Tim Duncan, Dallas' Michael Finley and Dirk Nowitzki and Sacramento's Chris Webber and Peja Stojakovic also are still competing in the playoffs. In addition, the league's most improved player, Orlando's 21 year-old Tracy McGrady, was a major star of the first round even though his team lost. "We try to promote the game and the teams and all the players," Granik said. "There are just certain players who capture people's imaginations. You can't deny that. "We can't go out and create them. It just happens and they're doing it on the court. You can't make superstars, I don't care how good a promotion. It's what they do on the court, and here we have Iverson and Carter. They're doing it most nights on the floor. That's what people see and they love to watch it." The personal similarities between Carter and Iverson are few other than both are mama's boys. Iverson's mother, Ann, attends almost all of her son's games while dressed in a 76ers jersey with "IVERSON'S MOM" emblazoned on it. Carter's mother, Michelle, prefers street clothes at games, but she publicly criticized Oakley when he dared to criticize her baby boy. Though Iverson — with his corn-row hairstyle, multiple tattoos and rap albums — might appeal directly to the hip-hop generation, the more conservative Carter is Mr. Basketball in Canada. One of the Raptors' top priorities is keeping him with the franchise well beyond the 2001-02 season, when his contract expires. They have a window from Aug. 1 to Oct. 31 to re-sign him. If they don't, he will become a free agent after the 2001-02 season. He and team officials prefer not to talk about the future just yet. Meanwhile, he and Iverson downplay their personal rivalry. Carter: "We try to do our thing as a team. I just try to fit in within the team concept and do what I need to do. I see what Allen is doing, but I'm not thinking about trying to outdo him personally." Iverson: "I can't accomplish anything without my teammates. I know that, they know that and everybody knows that. Vince is a great player, but he needs his teammates just like I need mine. The things my teammates do to help us win are just as important as the things I do. Toronto Raptors vs Milwaukee Bucks Nov.6/07 MILWAUKEE, Nov. 6 (AP) -- The Milwaukee Bucks didn't seem to miss their coach very much Tuesday night. Actually, they didn't miss much of anything. Even Desmond Mason's unorthodox jump hook shots were falling on a scalding shooting night for the Bucks, who shot 60.3 percent from the field in a runaway 112-85 victory over the Toronto Raptors. Mason finished 10-for-10 and had 21 points. "I got fouled on two of them and still made them,'' said Mason, who returned to Milwaukee as a free agent in the offseason. "Those were some lucky ones.'' The Bucks' offensive outburst came despite the absence of coach Larry Krystkowiak, who went to the hospital after his wife, Jan, went into labor with twins Tuesday afternoon. Krystkowiak, in his first full year as the Bucks' head coach after replacing Terry Stotts in the middle of last season, was there for the birth of healthy twin daughters at 7:42 p.m. By then, the Bucks had the game under control. "He got twins and a 30-point win,'' Bucks guard Mo Williams said. "What else can you ask for?'' Bucks assistant Tony Brown coached the team in Krystkowiak's absence, presiding over a steady stream of scoring that started early and never really let up. On defense, the Bucks held Toronto star Chris Bosh to one point and the Raptors' starting five to a total of 28. Bosh, who nursed a nagging left knee injury through the preseason, wasn't willing to chalk his struggles up to conditioning. "I am healthy enough to play basketball,'' Bosh said. "If I'm on the court, there is no excuse. I just have to keep playing.'' A team official offered Bosh a stat sheet after the game, but Bosh said he didn't need it. Raptors coach Sam Mitchell wasn't willing to nitpick Bosh's play. "I am not going to talk about an individual guy,'' Mitchell said. "It was a whole team effort, not just one guy.'' Juan Dixon led the Raptors with 20 points on a night that, combined with an overtime loss to Boston on Sunday, added up to a significant letdown from their 106-69 victory over New Jersey last Friday. "I told our guys we proved two things: We're good enough to win by 30, but we're also good enough to lose by 30,'' Mitchell said. "We have got to come out ready to play. Hopefully it was just one of those nights.'' For a while, it looked like the Bucks were going to have their best shooting night in more than two decades. Milwaukee was shooting over 65 percent with 5 minutes left in the game, but got sloppy at the end. Milwaukee hasn't shot 65 percent or higher for a game since a victory over Sacramento on Dec. 15, 1985. With Bosh limited to 10 minutes in the first half after committing two early fouls, the Bucks took their first double-figure lead with a 14-0 run late in the first quarter. Milwaukee led 59-39 after a three-point play by Andrew Bogut with 2:36 left in the second quarter. Toronto then went on a 9-2 run to close within 13, but Williams hit a jumper at the horn to give the Bucks a 63-48 lead. Milwaukee shot 67.5 from the field in the first half, including 76.2 percent in the first quarter. Bosh's only point came on a free throw with 5:22 left in the second quarter. He playing sparingly in the second half. Milwaukee went on a 17-3 run in the third quarter that included six points by Bucks rookie Yi Jianlian and was capped by Mason's 10th straight field goal attempt without a miss. Mitchell wished his team's defense had made life a little harder on Mason, but admitted that some of the shots were spectacular. "Some of the shots he hit - the fadeaway, one-handed jump shot, hook shot - you have got to give him credit,'' Mitchell said. Michael Redd added 17 points for the Bucks, while Williams scored 13, Yi and Bogut both had 12 and Bobby Simmons added 11. Bogut had 11 rebounds. Notes: Milwaukee G Charlie Bell bruised his right quadriceps in the second quarter but was able to return. ... The Raptors became the first team in NBA history to hit at least one 3-pointer in 700 straight games. They set the NBA record when the streak reached 595 in 2006. ... Vin Baker holds the Bucks' franchise record with a 13-for-13 shooting game in 1997. ... In a text message to the Bucks' PR staff, Krystkowiak said his wife and daughters were doing well after her delivery. Tags: Toronto Raptors vs Milwaukee Bucks Nov.6/07 |

Toronto Raptors vs Boston Celtics Dec.16/07 Paul Pierce poured in 18 points to lead Boston 90-77 over Toronto on Sunday, stretching the Celtics' win streak to nine games and ending the Raptors' win streak at four. Kevin Garnett added 16 points and eight rebounds for the league-leading Celtics (20-2). Chris Bosh had 17 points and 13 rebounds to top Toronto (14-11), while Jamario Moon finished with 13 points and Kris Humphries finished with 12. Jose Calderon and Jason Kapono added eight points apiece. The Raptors played their third straight game without guard T.J. Ford, injured in a frightening fall Tuesday at Atlanta. The Celtics were missing Ray Allen (sore ankle), but turns out they didn't need their all-star guard. Boston led from the outset, thanks in large part to Toronto's woeful shooting. The Raptors shot just 29 per cent in the first half and 39 per cent on the afternoon and trailed by as many as 21 points in the second quarter. When Juan Dixon launched an airball midway through the second quarter, boos rained down from the Air Canada Centre crowd. The Celtics took a 71-54 lead into the fourth quarter. The Raptors opened the fourth with a 7-0 run, with a basket by Joey Graham pulling Toronto within 10 points and bringing the Air Canada Centre crowd to its feet. But the Celtics forced the fans back to their seats in a hurry with a 15-4 run, a three by Eddie House putting Boston back up by 21 points with just under four minutes left in the game, and the Celtics cruised to victory, marking their first nine-game win streak since March 16-31, 1993. The game was played while a snowstorm raged outside, and while the crowd was announced as a sellout at 19,800, numerous empty seats dotted the arena. The start of the second half was delayed 14 minutes due to a leak in the ACC roof. The Celtics, who are riding a remarkable turnaround after adding Garnett and Allen in the off-season, shot 49 per cent on the night. Toronto outrebounded the Celtics 42-35. Toronto's troubles started early Sunday. They shot just 24 per cent in the first quarter, and a three-pointer by James Posey with 37 seconds left gave the Celtics a 27-17 lead heading into the second. A three by Tony Allen stretched Boston's advantage to 21 points early in the second. But Toronto fought back, and when Bosh converted a free throw after a basket with five seconds left in the half, it cut the Celtics' lead to 50-36 at the break. Boston went on a 15-4 run in the third to take a 69-46 lead with 1:21 left in the quarter, and led 71-54 with one quarter left. NOTES: Boston has won all three matchups against Toronto this season. ... The Raptors don't play at home again until they host Detroit on Jan. 4. Toronto Raptors vs Golden State Warriors Mar.12/08 Baron Davis says the Golden State Warriors play such a carefree, entertaining game that it's easy to forget every night is part of a fight for their playoff livelihood. The Toronto Raptors don't have any such concerns about making the post-season and maybe that was one reason Davis and his teammates were tougher in the final minutes Wednesday night. Monta Ellis scored 33 points and Davis had 23 points and 15 assists in the Warriors' seventh victory in eight games, 117-106 over the slumping yet still playoff-bound Raptors. Davis paced the Warriors' 40th victory of the season by ramping up his Warriors after T.J. Ford rallied Toronto midway through the fourth quarter to its first lead since the opening minute. Davis hit a jumper and had two exceptional assists in the next 90 seconds, giving Golden State a lead it wouldn't lose. The Warriors need every win they can get in the frighteningly competitive Western Conference, where a team could finish 20 games above .500 and miss the playoffs. Golden State is in eighth place at 40-23. ``I've never been involved in something this tight in my career,'' said Davis, the only Warriors player to appear in every game this season. ``This is just a tremendous time to be playing basketball. Every game is an opportunity to move up and see where we can finish.'' Stephen Jackson added 19 points for the Warriors, who overcame several awkward matchups with Toronto's larger lineup to beat the Raptors for the fourth straight time in Oakland and finish the regular season 20-10 against East teams. Golden State took an early 20-point lead before falling behind with 6 1/2 minutes to play, but Davis and Ellis confidently led a comeback for the Warriors' third straight win. Davis had 10 points including the Warriors' last seven _ and six assists in the final period. ``That's his quarter, and he seems to get it to a different level in the fourth quarter,'' Warriors coach Don Nelson said of Davis. ``He's one of those rare guys that can do that.'' Ford scored 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter for the Raptors, who lost for the sixth time in eight games. Anthony Parker added 22 points for Toronto, which lost to the Lakers one night earlier to open a five-game West Coast road trip. ``It's a tough back-to-back, but I don't think fatigue was a factor for us,'' Parker said. ``I thought we fought hard through it, and it was more about taking care of the ball and getting back on defence and limiting the fast-break baskets, which I think we did a better job of in the second half.'' Toronto played its seventh straight game without leading scorer Chris Bosh, who hopes to return from his sore right knee during the trip. Size wasn't the Raptors' problem, as Andrea Bargnani, Rasho Nesterovic and Kris Humphries all took turns scoring easily in the paint against Golden State's small-ball lineup. Despite their recent struggles culminating in their flat final minutes against Golden State, the Raptors (34-30) are solidly in fifth place in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. If the Raptors had the same record in the West, they would be 6 1/2 games behind Golden State in 10th place, out of the playoff race. ``We dug ourselves a big hole, and we fought so hard,'' Ford said. ``I think that happens a lot in the NBA. You work so hard, and we finally get right there, and they go on another run. We got the lead by one point, and then we just went into a drought.'' Golden State jumped to a 37-17 lead on Mickael Pietrus' dunk to open the second quarter, but Toronto stayed close largely thanks to Parker, who bested defence from both Davis and Ellis. The Warriors also missed 12 of their first 13 three-pointers before Jackson hit back-to-back shots in the third quarter. Notes: Warriors F Chris Webber still isn't ready to return from his left knee injury after a week of rehabilitation in Atlanta. Webber has missed Golden State's last five games, and Nelson has no idea when he'll return or if he'll be able to get in shape quickly enough to make the Warriors' playoff roster. ... Pietrus started and scored 14 points before fouling out with 3:35 to play. ... Golden State is two wins away from guaranteeing its second straight winning season after 12 straight losing campaigns. Preseason Toronto Raptors vs Washington Wizards 26/10/07 TORONTO, Oct. 26 (AP) -- Andrea Bargnani had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Toronto Raptors to a 98-64 rout of the Washington Wizards in the final preseason game for both teams Friday night. Jason Kapono scored 12 points for Toronto, while Juan Dixon and Carlos Delfino finished with 10 apiece. DeShawn Stevenson had 12 points for the Wizards. The Raptors led from the outset Friday, making it look easy against a sloppy Wizards squad, and took a 29-point lead into the fourth quarter. With a collection of bench players for both teams on the court for the final few minutes, the athletic Jamario Moon scored on an alley-oop dunk that brought the crowd to its feet with just under two minutes to play. Luke Jackson sunk a 3-pointer the next time down the floor to make it 96-64 for Toronto, and the Raptors cruised to an easy win to finish their exhibition schedule 5-2. The Wizards dropped to 4-4. Toronto has looked solid in its past two games, and has plenty of reason to be optimistic about the regular season, which starts Wednesday when the Raptors host the Philadelphia 76ers in their opener. Toronto shot 49 percent and held Washington to 37 percent shooting. The Raptors outrebounded the Wizards 47-30. Tags: Preseason Toronto Raptors vs Washington Wizards 26/10/07 |

Toronto Raptors vs Milwaukee Bucks Jan.25/08 The last time the Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks met, it was just four games into the NBA season, the Bucks came out on the winning side of a blowout, and Toronto star Chris Bosh was held to a single point. Friday night, that game was a distant memory, as Bosh poured in 32 points and the Raptors pounded Milwaukee 106-75, in a telling display of just how far they've come. ``That was early in the season, that was a different me, it was a different team back then,'' Bosh said afterwards. The Raptors have also finally figured out how to turn homecourt in their favour, with Friday's win marking their fifth straight triumph at the Air Canada Centre. ``That was the topic of discussion in the first half of the season, we weren't really taking advantage of our home court and we need to do that now,'' Bosh said. ``We just have to defend our home court because we're playing pretty good on the road right now so we just have to keep it going.'' Carlos Delfino added 18 points for the Raptors (24-19), who won for the seventh time in nine games overall. Jose Calderon finished with 11 points and 12 assists. Andrea Bargnani and Anthony Parker _ on a perfect six-for-six shooting _ finished with 13 points apiece, as the Raptors won five straight at home for the first time since March 21-April 15 of last season. The Raptors were coming off arguably their biggest win of the season, edging the league-leading Celtics 114-112 in Boston on Wednesday. They rode the momentum into Friday's game, and survived some sloppy play in the early going, finally breaking the game open with a 19-0 run _ their longest of the season _ in the third quarter. Calderon drained a three with 0.9 seconds on the clock for good measure to send the Raptors into the fourth up 79-53. ``When you only give up three field goals in a quarter, you are going to win a lot of basketball games,'' Raptors coach Sam Mitchell said. ``We felt like we did not play well in the first half and we wanted to come in in the third quarter and be a little more aggressive.'' The Raptors stretched their lead to 28 points just three minutes into the final quarter, and then Bosh and Calderon took a seat for the rest of the game. ``Every now and then it's nice to have a game like that where you can get guys out and they can kind of relax,'' Mitchell said. With Toronto's second unit on the floor for much of the fourth, the Raptors stretched their lead to 30 points on a pair of free throws by Kris Humphries with two minutes left as the Raptors cruised to victory. Michael Redd and former Raptor Charlie Villanueva had 12 points each to top the Bucks (17-27), who were playing their fourth game in five nights. The last time the two teams played, on Nov. 6, the Bucks routed the Raptors 112-85 in Milwaukee. Bosh had just a point, and the Raptors started combined for a woeful 28 points. The Raptors had 71 points between them Friday. Bosh has been rounding into form over the past few weeks, and put in another fine performance Friday, shooting 12-for-19 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in an economical 35 minutes. Bosh said he didn't gain extra motivation from the previous loss to the Bucks. ``I don't get too hard on myself, I just put that stuff behind me,'' Bosh said. ``I just wanted to play my game, I didn't want to get too caught up in that because I would have been forcing stuff and shooting bad shots.'' Calderon doled out more assists than the entire Bucks team combined, as the Raptors' ball movement played a major factor in the win. The Raptors had 23 assists to Milwaukee's 11. Calderon's strong game may have helped his cause in the guard's bid to be named a reserve for the NBA all-star team. If not, the Spaniard's not sweating it. ``It's not my call,'' Calderon said. ``For me to be close (to making the all-star team) is really good, but it's up to the coaches. If I'm going, it's going to be a dream.'' The Raptors had another strong shooting night _ 51 per cent _ while holding the Bucks to 42. They also outrebounded the Bucks 42-36. Bosh led the way with 10 points in the first, and the Raptors shot a decent 47 per cent in the quarter to lead 23-20 heading into the second. Delfino connected on three shots from beyond the arc in the second quarter, his three with 1:31 left stretching Toronto's lead to six points. The Raptors led by eight before a three by Royal Ivey with 28 seconds on the clock cut Toronto's lead to 47-42 at the break. The Raptors raced out on their 19-0 run early in the third, a turnaround jumper by Bosh putting Toronto up 76-51. Calderon's three with less than a second left put Toronto up by 26 to end the third. NOTES: The Raptors visit Washington on Tuesday in the first game of a back-to-back series against the Wizards. They'll host the Wizards on Wednesday. . . Toronto Raptors vs Philadelphia 76ers Oct.31/07 TORONTO, Oct. 31 (AP) -- Midway through the second quarter of the Toronto Raptors' season opener, Jose Calderon threw a high looping pass to Chris Bosh that the All-Star forward finished with a resounding dunk. The point guard tandem of Calderon and T.J. Ford wanted to set the tone for the new season, and they did just that while leading the defending Atlantic Division champions to a 106-97 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night. "T.J. Ford and Jose Calderon did great,'' Raptors coach Sam Mitchell said. "If you look at their stat line, it was unbelievable.'' Ford had 14 points and 12 assists, while Calderon had 13 points and four assists. They each had just one turnover. "I think that's how it has to be all year,'' Ford said. "When we play well, the guys are able to get open and guys will continue to have that confidence.'' Andrea Bargnani scored 20 points, Bosh added 16, and Anthony Parker finished with 13 for the Raptors. Andre Iguodala led the 76ers with 23 points, while Kyle Korver had 20. The Sixers cut a 22-point, third-quarter deficit to 14 heading into the fourth quarter, then pulled to 90-89 on a running jump shot by Iguodala with 4:47 left. Bargnani answered with a 3-pointer and was fouled by Samuel Dalembert. Bargnani made the free throw for just the 14th four-point play in franchise history. That put Toronto back up by five. "They were an important four points,'' Bargnani said. "I received a very nice pass, I was hoping it would come to me and I was a little lucky.'' Ford drove to the basket to finish with a nifty finger roll with 1:46 left, then Jason Kapono, the former Miami Heat 3-point champion, connected on a long jumper to put Toronto up by nine. Bosh had a decent night, despite a left knee injury that limited him to 15 minutes combined over the final two preseason games and kept him out of the previous three games completely. The All-Star forward was 5-for-10 from the field, his alley-oop dunk from Calderon in the second quarter bringing the sellout crowd of 19,800 to its feet. "It felt good to be back out there, but I'm not up to 30 minutes a game yet, so I just have to be patient with the whole situation,'' Bosh said. With Bargnani leading the way, the Raptors shot 49 percent, but the Sixers outrebounded Toronto 47-35 and grabbed a couple of key boards in the final few minutes. Dalembert finished with four points and six rebounds. The Sixers center played just one preseason game because of a stress fracture in his foot. The Raptors led 24-22 heading to the second quarter, then used a 17-4 run to lead 58-50 at halftime. "We put ourselves in such a hole down 22 points,'' Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Toronto is a good basketball team the way they spread the floor and kick the ball to different players.'' Bargnani had seven points in the third, including a layup with 6:04 left in the quarter that gave Toronto a 22-point lead. The Sixers outscored Toronto 12-4 to the end of the quarter, cutting the Raptors' lead to 81-67 heading into the fourth. Notes: The Raptors handed out several awards before the game: Bosh for all-NBA second team, and Jorge Garbajosa and Bargnani as all-rookie first team. Mitchell was honored for being named Coach of the Year, and GM Bryan Colangelo as NBA executive of the year. ... A vocal group of Toronto FC fans occupied a section of the arena. Toronto Raptors vs Memphis Grizzlies Nov.2807 T.J. Ford was on the bench in street clothes and Chris Bosh had long since limped to the locker-room with a groin strain when the Toronto Raptors surged ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies for good Wednesday. The injury-depleted Raptors displayed the depth of their roster once again en route to a 103-91 win over the visiting Memphis Grizzlies. ``That's our strength, especially with such a long season, so many things can happen,'' said Anthony Parker. Parker finished with 19 points to top Toronto (8-7), which used a balanced attack to beat the struggling Grizzlies, with seven players scoring in double figures. Jose Calderon added 13 points and 10 assists and committed just one turnover while Carlos Delfino and Jason Kapono scored 14 apiece. Andrea Bargnani finished with 11, while Rasho Nesterovic pitched in with 10. Chris Bosh had 10 points before leaving the game in the second quarter with a strained right groin, the one negative on the night. Bosh said he'd hurt his groin a day earlier in practice. ``I was just trying to get going,'' said the all-star forward. ``Usually it's one of those things that when you get warm, you don't feel it. But it was a little painful making certain cuts, so I decided to take it easy. ``I'm sure after a good rest tomorrow and good treatment, I'll be ready to go Friday (when the Raptors host Cleveland).'' Juan-Carlos Navarro led the Grizzlies (5-10) with 15 points, while Pau Gasol had 13. Toronto outshot and outhustled the Grizzlies all night, blowing open the game with a second-quarter performance that saw them outscore their visitors 30-10. ``I think that's when they brought in their second unit, and I don't think there's really a dropoff when we bring anybody off the bench,'' Parker said. Toronto led by as much as 28 points in the third and took an 82-60 lead into the fourth quarter at the Air Canada Centre. The Grizzlies cut Toronto's advantage to 14 points on three-pointer by Tarence Kinsey with 1:51 left, but the game was well decided by that point. ``We were too stationary, we stood a lot, we weren't efficient and that's when they made their run and broke open the game,'' said Gasol. The Raptors also lost Bargnani with about 10 minutes to go in the game, when he banged knees with Stromile Swift. ``Now is better than when I was coming off the court, so we'll see tomorrow,'' Bargnani said. Calderon continues to fill in seamlessly for Ford, who missed his fourth straight game with an arm injury. Calderon has just two turnovers in his last three games _ and his lone giveaway Wednesday came just before he was subbed off, when Parker let a pass slip through his fingers. ``A.P. is killing me,'' Calderon joked afterwards. ``I just want to publicly apologize for the last turnover,'' Parker said. ``I dropped it.'' It wasn't all bad news on the injury front. Nesterovic played his first game after missing five with an ankle injury, and his size up front was certainly appreciated when both Bosh and Bargnani went out. The Raptors shot 51 per cent on the night, while holding the Grizzlies to 39 per cent, and Toronto outrebounded the visitors 46-38. ``We got to their shooters, we didn't let those guys get hot and get going and we did a good job on Pau Gasol,'' said Raptors coach Sam Mitchell. With four Spaniards on the two rosters, the game was billed as ``Spanish Night.'' The game was broadcast live in Spain, and some two dozen Spanish journalists were in attendance. Calderon and Jorge Garbajosa make up Toronto's Spanish contingent, while the Grizzlies have Gasol and Navarro. Garbajosa, though, is out indefinitely with surgery pending on the ankle he injured last March that ended his rookie season prematurely. The Grizzlies led 29-27 at the end of a first quarter that saw seven lead changes. Delfino led the way with 14 points in the second quarter and Toronto took an 18-point lead late in the frame on a Parker jump shot. The Raptors shot 68 per cent and held the Grizzlies to a woeful 16 per cent shooting in the quarter, and Toronto was up 57-39 at the break. The Raptors stretched their lead to 79-51 on a driving dunk by Parker with 4:21 left and left 82-60 with a quarter left to play. NOTES: The Raptors defeated the Grizzlies at Memphis last week. . . The game was the second of a three-game homestand. The Raptors host Cleveland on Friday, then play the Wizards at Washington on Saturday. Tags: Toronto Raptors vs Memphis Grizzlies Nov.2807 |

Toronto Raptors vs Atlanta Hawks Jan.19/08 Chris Bosh believes he's playing the best basketball of his career right now. With yet another superb performance Friday night, it's tough to argue. Bosh poured in 35 points and added nine rebounds to lead the Toronto Raptors to their third straight victory at the Air Canada Centre on Friday, with a 89-78 win over the Atlanta Hawks. The Raptors all-star said his confidence is at the point now where he believes he can score every time he has the ball. ``I feel like that. I've been saying that for two days now. . . well, three or four or five days now,'' Bosh said with a laugh. ``I'm feeling good, I feel very confident, I think everything is just opening up for me. I'm finally at 100 per cent.'' Anthony Parker finished with 18 points in the game that marked the first meeting between the two teams since T.J. Ford suffered a neck injury in Atlanta on Dec. 11. Jose Calderon added 13 points and nine assists for the Raptors (22-18), who won for the fifth time in the last six games. The Raptors took a 67-60 advantage into the fourth quarter of the back-and-forth affair, but broke the game open with a solid performance in the final few minutes, holding off a brief Hawks rally. The young Hawks pulled to within two points with just over five minutes left in the game after a three-pointer by Tyronn Lue. Parker responded with a three _ one of four he had on the night _ and Jamario Moon followed followed with a slam dunk to stretch Toronto's lead back to seven. ``They made some tough shots,'' said Joe Johnson, who topped the Hawks with 25 points. ``I think pretty much every three they hit in the fourth had a hand in their face. I thought we played pretty good defence, they just made tough shots.'' Moon had a huge block on a shot by Johnson the next time down the court, and then Bosh was fouled on a layup and connected on the free throw to put Toronto up by 10 with 3:30 to go. It was all Raptors to the final buzzer, as Calderon had two baskets and Bosh added a layup to pad the lead in front of a capacity crowd of 19,800 at the Air Canada Centre. Josh Smith added 24 points for Atlanta (17-19). The night was yet another in a string of solid performances by Bosh, who has been improving every game out after his early-season struggles _ the product of a foot and knee injury. Bosh shot 12-for-18 on Friday, and went 11-for-14 from the free throw line. Mitchell joked that he didn't want to talk about how well Bosh is playing for fear of jinxing it. But Parker would. ``I'm voting for him for the all-star game. I got a T-shirt ready, I'm going to bring it out,'' Parker said. ``It was one of those games when I looked at the end of the game and he had 35 points. He does so many things out there, and he exerts so much energy. ``He's just put us on his back the last couple of weeks not, and that's a huge reason why we've been able to string a couple of wins together.'' What pleases Mitchell most about Bosh's play is his ability to find his teammates when he draws a double-team. ``Chris does not have to score the ball, he just has to command a double-team,'' Mitchell said. ``Chris is just trusting his teammates and getting the ball out.'' Toronto Raptors vs Chicago Bulls Nov.25/07 Whether it's getting blown out early or faltering in the fourth quarter, the Chicago Bulls keep finding ways to lose. Chris Bosh had 16 points and 13 rebounds, rookie Jamario Moon matched his career-high with 15 points and the Toronto Raptors pulled away in the fourth to beat Chicago 93-78 Sunday, handing the Bulls their fourth straight loss. "There's no fun in moral victories,'' said a downcast Kirk Hinrich. "I feel like we played better but we lost the game and we struggled down the stretch again.'' The energetic Moon added nine rebounds, six blocks and three steals. "He gave us a lot of problems,'' Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. Starting in place of the injured T.J. Ford (sore left arm), point guard Jose Calderon had 19 points and 14 assists for Toronto. "Jose is playing fantastic right now,'' Bosh said. "He's moving the ball where he's supposed to and taking good shots. He's just poised and controlled. We need that right now, especially with T.J. being out.'' Luol Deng had 21 points and nine rebounds in his return to Chicago's starting lineup after missing the previous three games with a sore lower back. Ben Gordon added 17 and Hinrich had 15 for Chicago. Carlos Delfino had 13 points and eight rebounds for Toronto. The victory was the 114th for Sam Mitchell as Raptors coach, moving him past Lenny Wilkens for the most wins in team history. The Raptors led 70-64 after three quarters, but missed their first six shot attempts in the fourth. A pair of jumpers by Chicago's Joe Smith cut the gap to two before a Jason Kapono 3-pointer with 8:06 to go ended Toronto's slump. Kapono's basket seemed to deflate the Bulls, who didn't make another shot until Deng's 3-pointer with 2:36 to play and the game already out of reach. "In critical moments, we're a little flat-footed out there,'' Skiles said. "Right now at least, we don't have the thrust of energy that we need at that moment.'' Hinrich said defensive lapses have hurt the Bulls in late-game situations. "In the past, when we got down to those points in the game we were getting stops,'' Hinrich said. "It's something we haven't been able to do this year, which puts that much more pressure on us to execute at the other end.'' No Chicago player was able to defend Moon, who brought the crowd to its feet by blowing past Ben Wallace for a layup with 5:32 to play, giving Toronto a 75-68 edge. "Coach had already pointed out to me that when I get the ball on the wing, no one is in front of me,'' Moon said. "He told me the next time I get it he wanted me to take it to the basket strong. When I turned, no one was in front of me so I just went.'' Moon, who said he routinely downs a pair of energy drinks before games, has brought a welcome boost to the Raptors. "He's done a great job,'' Bosh said. "Every team in the NBA needs somebody like that because sometimes you're flat. When you have a guy who's going to come out and run the floor like that and make some big-time blocked shots, it's going to help us out. That kind of wakes everybody up.'' The Bulls entered play Sunday shooting an NBA-worst 38.6 percent from the field. They were no better against Toronto, finishing the game 30-for-79 (38 percent). "We've got to execute better and right now we're not doing that,'' Deng said. Chicago trailed 19-12 midway through the first but erased the deficit with an 11-0 run and outscored Toronto 21-6 over the final 5:10 to go up 33-26 after 12 minutes. Poor shooting by the Bulls let Toronto back into the game in the second, when Chicago made just three of 19 field goal attempts. An acrobatic put-back by Moon in the last seconds of the half gave the Raptors a 50-44 lead at the break. Notes: Ford has not played since suffering a stinger in his left arm last Tuesday at Dallas. ... Raptors forward Jorge Garbajosa will be in Baltimore on Monday to have a specialist examine his left ankle and leg. Garbajosa, who suffered a displaced ankle joint and fractured fibula in March, was placed on the inactive list last Tuesday after an MRI showed "unusual'' results.
