Azusa Street Revival - pt 2 of 2 The Azusa Street Revival was a Pentecostal revival meeting that took place in Los Angeles, California and was led by William J. Seymour, an African American preacher. It began with a meeting on April 14, 1906 at the African Methodist Episcopal Church and continued until roughly 1915. The revival was characterized by speaking in tongues, dramatic worship services, and inter-racial mingling. The participants received criticism from secular media and Christian theologians for behaviors considered to be outrageous and unorthodox, especially at the time. Today, the revival is considered by historians to be the primary catalyst for the spread of Pentecostalism in the 20th century. (The Azusa Street Revival Mission building was torn down in 1938). Far removed from the mind-expanding, flower-power explorations of their California contemporaries, they were a gritty, hard-hitting band respectful of their blues, country, and rock & roll roots. John Fogerty's cutting, raspy voice bore echoes of Howlin' Wolf and Little Richard as he delivered lyrics that alternately celebrated and bemoaned a working man's life. GLORIA by Rick Cummings/Revival (Van Morrison/The Doors) This video is back on youtube with permission (see below). This video is from a May 2008 live outdoor show in Fulton NY where I filled in to help my friends in the oldies & classic rock band "Revival". The song I'm singing is called "G-L-O-R-I-A", originally recorded by Van Morrison, by Jim Morrison and The Doors, and by the Shadows of Knight. If you listen very closely, each time I sing the lyric "she comes walking down my street", I play the riff from the Roy Orbison song "Pretty Woman" on my acoustic guitar. I'm actually an electric guitar guy but wanted to see if I could get through an entire guest gig with a hollow-body guitar cranked up to sound like an electric guitar. Well, I didn't make it! Anyway, you can hear some of my original songs at my website Vanesoloman.com. Hope you like this video, but the sound quality (and of course visual quality) was FAR better in person!
