RuBot II - The Rubik's cube solving robot. Read this before you comment! This is the new version of RuBot by Pete Redmond from Dublin, Ireland. It's very different to the prototype but it has to be the coolest looking robot solver ever. There are cameras in the eyes of the head that scan the cube before the pneumatic arms solve it. It usually solves the Cube in about 35 seconds (not including the scan) no matter how much it is mixed up. The solving algorithm is taken care of by Herbert Kociemba's Cube Explorer software and usually solves the cube in a maximum of about 20 moves. In this video, the cube wasn't mixed up too hard so RuBot was able to find the optimum solution. Thanks to all of those who think it is too good to be true. That is a real compliment! If you still don't believe it, Look at the other RuBot videos - they have better scrambles. Or better still, call in on one of RuBot's live demonstrations. By the way, that's my daughter in the clip with RuBot. Tags: robot Rubik's cube |

Disk-Based Parallel Computation, Rubik's Cube, and Checkpointing Google Tech Talks March, 24 2008 ABSTRACT This talk takes us on a journey through three varied, but interconnected topics. First, our research lab has engaged in a series of disk-based computations extending over five years. Disks have traditionally been used for filesystems, for virtual memory, and for databases. Disk-based computation opens up an important fourth use: an abstraction for multiple disks that allows parallel programs to treat them in a manner similar to RAM. The key observation is that 50 disks have approximately the same parallel bandwidth as a _single_ RAM subsystem. This leaves latency as the primary concern. A second key is the use of techniques like delayed duplicate detection to avoid latency. For example, hash accesses accesses can be saved (even saved on disk), until there are sufficiently many pending accesses to use standard streaming techniques. We have designed a library for search problems that exploits the high parallel bandwidth while hiding the latency. We build abstractions for search that employ parallel disk-based hash arrays with the same speed as a single hash array in a single RAM subsystem. In the case of Rubik's cube, we exploited this mechanism by using seven terabytes of distributed disk in a search problem that showed that 26 moves suffice to solve Rubik's cube. Our initial efforts emphasize idempotent operations, so that we can easily recover from hardware or software faults. We next intend to apply a more general solution for fault recovery: checkpointing. This separate effort in our lab has now produced a mature, robust user-level checkpointing program has now matured. The package works successfully in tests on OpenMPI, MPICH-2, OpenMP, and parallel iPython (used in SciPy and NumPy). Our DMTCP package transparently checkpoints parallel, multi-threaded processes, with no modification either to the operating system or to the application binaries. Extrapolating from current experiments, we estimate that we can checkpoint a 1,000 node parallel computation in a matter of minutes. We are currently searching for a testbed on which to demonstrate this scalability. Speaker: Gene Cooperman Tags: google techtalks techtalk engedu talk talks googletechtalks education |

New world champion 2007 rubiks 3x3x3 blindfolded Chris Krueger - Blindfolded World Record Canadian Open 2007 - Saturday May 19th Scramble: L' R' F' R' U B2 L' R2 U' B' F R2 D2 L' B2 F' L2 F L R D2 U' B F U' Tel Aviv student joins Rubik's Cube tournament By LAUREN KRUGEL CJN Intern Dror Vomberg was not even a twinkle in his mother's eye during the Rubik's Cube craze of the early '80s. Nonetheless, the 20-year-old can solve the puzzle in under three minutes. Blindfolded. Vomberg, who studies math at Tel Aviv University, was one of hundreds of "cubists" who attended the World Rubik's Games Championships at the Ontario Science Centre Aug. 23 and 24. It was the first competition of its kind to be held in more than two decades. Invented by Hungarian Erno Rubik in the 1970s, the Rubik's Cube became one of the most successful toys of all time -- more than 250 million cubes were sold. With 43 quintillion possible configurations and only one correct one, some people have been known to solve the puzzle in as little as 16 seconds. "It's addictive," said Vomberg, absentmindedly turning the edges of his cube. "It's linear thinking. You have to visualize." Amid the din of clicking plastic, contestants stood behind gigantic replicas of the multicoloured cubic puzzles. A digital clock ticking away above their heads, they deftly flipped and twisted the sides of their cubes, their hands moving at lightning speed. Vomberg, who flew from Israel to attend the competition, returned to his seat disappointed. He did not break his record of solving a 3x3 cube in two minutes and 19 seconds, although three minutes and 56 seconds is still a pretty good time, he admitted. Cubing is not very popular in Israel, he said, "especially blindfolded." Here, Vomberg said, everyone wants to talk to him, and several young, eager cubists asked him to autograph their cubes. While in Toronto, he has been interviewed on Canada A.M. and YTV. Vomberg has been an avid cubist since he was a child, but it wasn't until he was 15 that he learned how to solve the cube blindfolded. He once saw a man doing the puzzle behind his back and was inspired to try it himself. "I thought this guy has to have extraordinary vision or something," he said. "I thought I'd try it." It took Vomberg two weeks to master blindfolded cubing. The first time he solved the puzzle, it took him an hour. He has since shaved his time down to a a few minutes. "It's the same system. I just need to memorize the places," said Vomberg, describing in great detail his technique. He observes the cube briefly before putting the blindfold on. Once he memorizes where at least two squares are, he can figure out where the rest are supposed to go with a series of mathematical equations. Once one side of the cube is complete, the trick is to finish the rest without undoing it. Cubing has given him a great opportunity to travel. In March, he competed on a German television show and after seeing an ad on a speedcubing Web site, decided to come to the competition in Toronto. The blindfolded competition was not held on the stage with the other categories. Vomberg and other blindfolded cubists solved their puzzle in a silent room backstage. Vomberg participated in the 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 blindfolded cubing events. By the end, he says, his hands were very sore. Vomberg, an observant Jew said he "freaked out a little" when he found out the first day of the competition fell on Shabbat. He said the organizers were very flexible and allowed him to participate only on the second day. While he could not bring his trusty cube with him, on Saturday, Vomberg and his father walked 25 minutes from their hotel to the competition to watch from the sidelines. "I'm not interested in the money," said Vomberg. ........................................................................................................................
