Serbian song from Kosovo A popular serbian wedding song from Kosovo and Metohia. Although it is performed on festive occasions, the song begins with sad verses: "A dense fog has fallen... not a thing can be seen." A large number of songs from Kosovo begin with the same verses. These words are a metaphor for the suffering and pain of the Kosovo Serbs in slavery under the Turks. Dense fog symbolizes the burden of life, under the pressure of which freedom cannot be glimpsed ("not a thing can be seen"). In the very next verse, like light shining through the darkness of slavery, the song places a tall tree in sight. Beneath it sits a tailor, sewing a wedding waistcoat upon which silver adornments shine like stars in the sky. These verses testify to the existence of faith, hope and joy even in slavery. The words of this song are as true today as they were once. Tags: kosovo serbia metohija srbija |

Murad I, ruler of the Ottoman empire, gathered his troops in Philippoupolis (Plovdiv) in the spring of 1389, and arrived in Ihtiman after a three-day long march. From there, he chose the route across Velbužd (Kyustendil) and Kratovo. Though longer than the alternative route across Sofia and Nišava valley which would give him direct access to Lazar's lands, it led him to Kosovo, which was strategically important as one of the most important trade crossroads on the Balkans: from Kosovo Murad could attack either Lazar's or Vuk's lands. After staying in Kratovo for a while Murad passed across Kumanovo, Preševo and Gnjilane to Priština, where he arrived on June 14. There are less data about Lazar's preparations, but it could be assumed that he gathered his troops near Niš, possibly on the right bank of the Južna Morava. He likely stayed there until he learned that Murad moved to Velbužd, when he too moved, probably across Prokuplje, to Kosovo. Lazar arrived to the Kosovo Field (Amselfeld) right after Murad's arrival at Priština. This was the optimal choice for the battlefield as it controlled all possible directions Murad could take. It is not certain how large the armies were, especially as later sources tend to exaggerate on their size, launching it into hundreds of thousands. Murad's army might have numbered 27-40,000. Taking the 40,000 estimate, it probably included some 5,000 Janissaries, 2,500 of Murad's cavalry guard, 6,000 spahis, 20,000 azaps and akincis and 8,000 of his vassals. Lazar's might have 12-30,000. Taking the estimate of 25,000, some 15,000 were under Lazar's command, 5,000 Vuk's, and as much of Vlatko's. Of those, several thousands were cavalry, but perhaps only several hundreds were clad in full plate armour. The armies met at Kosovo Field. Center of the Turkish army was led by Murad, while Bayezid was on the right wing and Yakub on the left. Around 1,000 archers were in the first line of the wings, followed with azaps and then akincis; in the front of the center were janissary, behind whom was Murad, surrounded with his cavalry guard; finally, logistics was in the back, guarded by a small number of troops. Serbian army had Lazar at the center, Vuk at his right wing and Vlatko as left. In the front of the Serbian army was cavalry, while infantry was in the back. While parallel, the disposition was not symmetric, as Serbian center overlapped the Turkish. The battle started with Turkish archers shooting at Serbian cavalry which then moved into attack. They managed to break through Turkish left wing, but weren't as successful against center and right wing. Even the left wing wasn't as defeated as it was simply pushed back. Based on many of the Turkish historical records, it is believed that the Sultan wass killed by Miloš Obilić who was pretending to be dead, while the Sultan was walking in the battlefield after the battle. On the other hand, in one account in Serbian records he was assassinated by Miloš Obilić, who made his way into the Turkish camp on the pretext of being a deserter and forced his way into the Sultan's tent and stabbed him with a dagger. The Balkans coalition initially gained advantage after their first charge, which heavily damaged the Turkish wing commanded by Jakub Celebi. In the center, the Christian fighters managed to push Ottoman forces back with only Bayezid's wing holding off the forces commanded by Vlatko Vuković. The Ottomans in a counter attack pushed Balkans forces back and prevailed later in the day. Due to inadequate reliable historical sources, the result of the battle is not clear. Though the Ottomans managed to push the Serbian forces back, they didn't move further to conquer Kosovo right after the battle. Instead, they retreated. This was due to the death of Sultan Murad; the new sultan Bayezid had to go to the capital to be crowned. On the other hand, some Serbian nobles started paying tribute and supplying soldiers to the Ottomans after the battle, while some didn't. Therefore it is not a clear victory or defeat. However, Ottomans had the initiative now since the toll on the Serbian side was heavy. Both armies sustained heavy casualties and both armies withdrew from the battlefield, but the toll on the Christians, especially on Serbia, was catastrophic as much of their political elite was wiped out. Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović was taken prisoner and executed. Tags: Srbija Serbia Car Lazar Srpski Srpska Serbian Kosovo Krajina Obilic Hellas Rossija Pravoslavlje Orthodox Borci Boj Bitka |

Serbian Warriors II SERBIAN REVOLUTION: FIRST AND SECOND UPRISING AGAINST THE OTTOMANS 1804-1811 / 1813-1815 Srpska Revolucija: Prvi i Drugi Srpski Ustanak The First Serbian Uprising was a Serbian national revolution which lasted one decade (1804-1813), during which Serbia perceived itself as an independent state for the first time after 300 years of Ottoman and short-lasting Austrian occupations. Revolutionary Serbia responded to the Ottoman Massacre of Serbian knights by establishing its separate government (Praviteljstvujusci Sovjet), Serbian Prince, Parliament (Zbor) and University of Belgrade. Even though it was brutally crushed by the Ottomans in 1813, this revolution sparked the Second Serbian Uprising in 1815, which resulted with the creation of modern Serbia, as it gained semi-independence from Ottoman Empire in 1817 (formally in 1829). After the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in the Turkish-Austrian war of 1791, Serbs living under Turkish rule began to realize the potential for success in an uprising against the Ottomans. Seeing the growing displeasure, the Sultan Selim III proclaimed fermans in 1793 and 1796 which gave more rights to Serbs. Among other things, taxes were to be collected by local Serbian rulers called knezes ("local dukes"), freedom of trade and religion were granted, and, most importantly, the Janissary corps were to leave Belgrade Pashaluk. However, on January 30, 1799, the Turkish court allowed the Janissaries to return. They and their leaders, the dahias, showed little respect towards any authority, even the central Turkish government. After killing Vizier Hadzi-Mustafa of Belgrade in 1801, they started to rule Serbia on their own. Recently-granted rights were suspended, and dahias exerted unlimited rule over Belgrade Pashaluk. Taxes were drastically increased, land was seized, forced labour (čitlučenje) was introduced, and many citizens fled the Janissaries in fear. Serb leaders began to conspire about starting an uprising against the dahias. When the dahias found out about this, they captured and killed many of the Serbian leaders on February 4, 1804 in an event known today as Seča knezova (Massacre of Serbian knights). This mistake by the Janissaries incited the uprising, as it angered the people and the leaders had nothing to lose. On February 14, 1804, in the small Šumadija village of Orašac, the Serbs gathered and decided to undertake an uprising. Karađorđe Petrović (Karadjordje) was elected as the leader of the uprising, which started immediately. That afternoon, a Turkish inn (caravansarai) in Orašac was burned and its residents fled or were killed. Similar actions were undertaken in surrounding villages and then spread further. Soon the cities Valjevo and Požarevac were liberated, and the siege of Belgrade started. When he was informed about the uprising, Selim III started to negotiate with the rebels. Dahias escaped from Belgrade, but they were captured and killed on the island of Ada Kaleh in the Danube. Eventually, the negotiations failed, and the Sultan organised a military campaign against the uprising. The first major battle of the uprising was the Battle of Ivankovac in 1805, where Karadjordje defeated the Turkish army and forced it to retreat toward Niš. The second major battle of the uprising was Battle of Misar in 1806, in which the rebels defeated an Ottoman army from Bosnia led by Kulin Captain. At the same time, the rebels led by Petar Dobrnjac defeated another army sent from the southeast in the Battle of Deligrad. In December 1806, the rebels besieged Belgrade, which was liberated in the beginning of 1807. In 1805 the Serbian rebels organized a basic government for administering Serbia during the combat. Rule was divided between the Narodna Skupstina (People's assembly), the Praviteljstvujusci Sovjet (Ruling Council), and Karadjordje himself. Land was returned, forced labour was abolished, and taxes were reduced. The young state was modernised and by 1808 the Great School was founded, regarded as the foundation of the University of Belgrade. Some of the leaders of the uprising later abused their privileges for personal gain, such as the reintroduction of forced labour in some places. There was dissent between Karadjordje and other leaders; Karadjordje wanted absolute power, while his voivods wanted to limit it. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-12 ended, the Ottoman Empire exploited these circumstances and reconquered Serbia in 1813. Though ultimately unsuccessful, the First Serbian Uprising paved the way for the Second Serbian Uprising of 1815, which eventually succeeded in securing Serbian autonomy. Serbian Warriors III The Balkan Wars and the First World War 1912-1918 Balkanski Ratovi i Prvi Svetski Rat 1912-1918 Za krst casni i slobodu zlatnu - Vecna Slava The Serbian Campaign was fought from August 1914, when Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia at the outset of First World War, until the end of the war in 1918. The front ranged from the Danube to southern Macedonia and back north again, involving forces from almost all combatants of the war. The Serbian Army was decimated towards the end of the war, falling from about 420,000[1] at its peak to about 100,000 at the moment of liberation. The Kingdom of Serbia had lost 1.3 million inhabitants during the war (both army and civilian losses), which represented 33% of its overall population and 60% of its male population - a demographic disaster that is still obvious today. (In official : Serbia lost 370,000 soldiers, or 26 percent, of all mobilised people (for ex. France 16.8; Germany 15.4; Russia 11.5; Italy 10.3 per cent). World War I was, in at least one sense, started when a group of young men (calling themselves Young Bosnia), most likely backed by a secret Serbian society (the Black Hand) assassinated the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Austria-Hungary issued a set of demands, the July Ultimatum. Serbia accepted all but one of them. The Austrians rejected the Serbian response and mobilized their southern army for a war against Serbia. Serbia had an experienced army, having fought two wars in the last two years, but it was also exhausted and poorly equipped and the Austrians thought that they would fall in less that a month. Serbia's strategy was to hold on as long as they could and hope the Russians could defeat the main Austro-Hungarian Army. Serbia constantly had to worry about its hostile neighbor to the east, Bulgaria, with which it had fought several wars, most recently in the 1913. The Serbian army at the start of the war was some 180,000 strong, commanded by Marshal (Vojvoda) Radomir Putnik. Putnik brilliantly handled the Serbian Army, even though he almost never left his special hospital room in Serbia. The war against Serbia started on August 12, when Austro-Hungarian armies crossed the border, the Drina River. While the entire Austro-Hungarian Army was very large, due to the Russian declaration of war, the Austro-Hungarians could only attack with two small armies (the Fifth and the Sixth) over the Bosnian border. They had around 280,000 men, and were much better equipped than the Serbians. Overall, Austrian command was in the hands of the ineffective General Potiorek. The Serbian Army threw back repeated attempts to cross the Drina and Sava rivers (this action is called the Battle of Cer or the Battle of Jadar). After very hard fighting, the Austro-Hungarian Army halted their attempts. In early September, the Serbs launched a small offensive into southern Bosnia, hoping to incite a revolt among their fellow Slavs. However, the offensive had no effect and was driven out within a few weeks. Serbian Warriors IV Dragoljub "Draža" Mihailović (Anglicised: Drazha Mihailovich; also known as Čiča, born in Ivanjica, Kingdom of Serbia, April 27, 1893-July 17, 1946) was a Serbian general now primarily remembered as leader of the Yugoslav Royal Army in the Fatherland during World War II. U.S. President Harry S. Truman posthumously awarded him the Legion of Merit for overseeing the rescue of five hundred American airmen by Chetniks during World War II. Following the Yugoslav defeat by Germany in April 1941, a small group of officers and soldiers led by Mihailović refused to surrender, and retreated in hope of finding Yugoslav army units still fighting in the mountains. At Ravna Gora, Mihailović organized the Chetniks detachment of the Yugoslav Army, which became the Military-Chetnik Detachments and finally the Yugoslav Army of the Homeland(Jugoslovenska vojska u otadžbini). The first Chetnik formations led by Mihailović were formed around Ravna Gora on June 14. The stated goal of the Chetniks was the liberation of the country from the occupying armies including the forces of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and the Ustaše (the fascist regime of the Independent State of Croatia). In 1943, the Germans decided to pursue the Chetniks in the northern zone, and offered a reward of 100,000 Reichsmarks for the capture of Mihailović, dead or alive. The British Special Operations Executive were being sent to aid Mihailović's forces beginning with the autumn of 1941. The Chetniks were forced to move to eastern Bosnia where they engaged in heavy combat with the Ustaše. The Chetnik movement was highly decentralized, and in that way was more like a collective of many small regional guerrillas which shared the same name, rather than a unified army under complete control of Mihailović and his staff. Evidence of Mihailović's loyal Allied and anti-Axis actions, all the way to the end of the occupation, comes from the 500 to 600 Allied (mostly UK and US) military personnel who were rescued by Mihailović forces over almost the entire area where Mihailović forces existed. These British and American personnel often remained with Mihailović and his various forces for months at a time, before they were able to be flown back to the West. As an independent American commission concluded in 1946, these Allied airmen were instructed by their American and British superiors to look for any signs of collaboration, they were given freedom of movement by Mihailović forces, and yet not one of these hundreds testified of Mihailović collaboration with the Axis. Several of these western military personnel gave very detailed testimony of witnessing, and in some cases participating in, anti-Axis actions, even after the Chetniks were abandoned by the Western Allies. The independent American commission that took testimony from some of these airmen concluded:"ALLEGED COLLABORATION WITH THE ENEMY No evidence was adduced before the commission which tended to show any collaboration between General Mihailović and the Axis powers. On the contrary, all the evidence tended strongly to disprove the existence of any such collaboration. ...all classes of witnesses were constantly on the lookout for collaboration, had full opportunity to discover it, and would be expected to discover it if it had existed. ... all the witnesses testified that in Mihailović territory they were allowed to go freely, and without escort, wherever they wanted, to talk without restriction to civilians and soldiers alike, and to make observations as they wished. OPERATIONS AGAINST THE ENEMY The evidence of American officers before the Commission indicated not merely the absence of collaboration between General Mihailović and the Axis powers, but also establish that General Mihailović and his men continued to conduct hostile operations against both the Germans and the Italians, even after the Allies had stopped sending him supplies and had concentrated their support in favor of Marshal Tito, and even after the date of the Italian surrender. American officers testified to numerous specific operations of this kind in which they had themselves participated with General Mihailović or with troops acting under his direction. US F-16 shoot down by serbian army in Bosnia 1995 Bosnian Serb Army SA-6 surface-to-air missile shot down a USAF F-16 near Mrkonjić Grad, Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 2, 1995. The American pilot, Scott O'Grady, ejected safely and was rescued six days later, on June 8. The 2001 film Behind Enemy Lines is loosely based on this event. The incident The pilots, Scott "Zulu" O'Grady (call sign "Basher 52", pronounced "Basher Five-Two") and his flight lead, Capt. Robert G. "Wilbur" Wright (call sign: "Basher 51", pronounced "Basher Five-One"), were briefed on the morning of June 2 about the weather and enemy positions they could expect for their flight. The two pilots took off without incident and flew according to their assigned mission parameters. The Serbs had unexpectedly moved a missile battery south and laid a trap for any incoming aircraft. They switched on their missile radars sparingly, giving the F-16 pilots little warning of their position, and fired two SAMs toward the jets. O'Grady was alerted by cockpit instruments that a missile was coming, though flying in clouds, he could not see it. The first missile exploded between the two USAF F-16s. The second hit O'Grady's plane in the belly. As his aircraft broke apart from the damage of the missile strike, O'Grady successfully ejected. After landing, O'Grady abandoned his parachute and moved into the woods. He lay face down, cupping his camouflaged flight gloves over his head and ears so he could not be spotted in the brush. Within minutes a teenage boy and a man wandered past; then he saw armed men nearby. Grady evaded detection even though the search for him continued relentlessly during his time on the ground. Part of this may be credited to his military SERE (survival, evasion, resistance, and escape) training, which taught him how to obtain water and food, evade detection, and avoid medical dangers like hypothermia. The rescue O'Grady waited to radio for help; he had been taught that downed pilots are often captured after calling for help too soon, giving away their position. Finally, on June 6, he signaled his location, using a little more of the small reserve of his radio's battery power each time he went on the air. The next day, just after 2:00 AM, he spoke into the radio. An American voice responded, and the rescue was set in motion. On June 8, 1995, he was rescued by United States Marines of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit based on the USS Kearsarge. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Tags: us navy air nato serbian terorist army Sixth Fleet shoot down |

Special Forces : Serbian JSO Special Operations Unit (Serbian: Јединица за специјалне операције, Jedinica za specijalne operacije ЈСО/JSO; or Црвене беретке, Crvene beretke {Red Berets}), was an elite special unit of the Serbian police and reported directly to the Serbian ministry of the interior. It was officially incorporated into the security system of the FR Yugoslavia in the spring of 1996, by merging paramilitary units which operated in Bosnian and Croatian wars under command of Željko Ražnatović "Arkan" (the "Tigers") and Franko Simatović (the "Red berets") and under the auspice of Jovica Stanišić, head of Serbia security service (Ресор државне безбедности, РДБ; Resor državne bezbednosti, RDB). From 1996 to November 2001, when members of this unit organized a public protest, it was formally under the competence of the RDB. The unit was finally disbanded in March 2003, after Serbian prime minister Zoran Đinđić was assassinated as a result of a conspiracy in which some members of the unit were involved (Zvezdan Jovanović, officer of the JSO and Milorad Ulemek "Legija", former commander of the unit, were convicted on May 23, 2007 for their parts in this assassination).
