Sripathi Sooriarachchi laid to rest : 13-Feb-2008 The mortal remains of SLFP (M) Convener Sripathi Sooriarachchi, who died under tragic circumstances, were laid to rest yesterday, (13/02/2008)amidst glowing tributes by the government and the opposition, and a call to carry on his struggle against corruption and the harassment of political opponents. SLFP (M) Leader Mangala Samaraweera, eulogising his friend, said he was a like an oasis in a desert -- a character the people would not forget. "Although he has dimmed like a star in a short space of time, his memory will continue to live amongst us because of the impact he has made on the country," Mr. Samaraweera said. SLFP General Secretary and Minister, Maithripala Sirisena, said all politicians must meet at the cemetery one day although they belonged to different political parties. He said Sripathi's death served as a reminder of this reality to all politicians. "Sripathi also proved the ultimate truth -- that death is a certainty and the life is uncertain," he said. LTTE kills Sri Lanka's Tamil Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle Tamil Tigers (LTTE) killed another Tamil politician in a suicide bomb blast. Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle was killed following the blast in Welliweriya, Gampaha this morning. The blast occurred when he was about to flag off a marathon run as part of a Sinhala-Hindu New Year celebration event. Being a faithful Catholic, the Tamil Minister expressed his concerns over LTTE's occupation of scared Madhu church and the removal of the Madhu statue recently. A lawyer by profession, Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle began his political career in 1970 as a SLFP polling agent. Fourteen years later in 1984 he was appointed as the SLFP chief organizer of the Katana electorate. He successfully contested the 1989 parliamentary election from the seat and ever since then elected to the parliament five consecutive times in the years 1989, 1994, 2000, 2001 and 2004. By the time of his death he was the Chief Government whip and a Cabinet Minister. He had also been appointed the UPFA organizer for the Trincomalee district for the forthcoming provincial council elections in the East. Veteran marathon runner K.A Karunarathne, who was a national and South Asian marathon gold medalist, is also said to be among the dead. President Mahinda Rajapaksa challenges UNP to win east polls President Mahinda Rajapaksa calls on the UNP to refrain from avenging innocent civilians obstructing international aid. UNP reprisals are aimed at averting the flow of foreign aid to Sri Lanka. (30/03/2008) Addressing the 18th SLFP Convention at Temple Trees this morning, he claimed it was the innocent civilians who are hindered as a result. The President noted that there is a posse, which raise voices abroad that human rights are violated in Sri Lanka. Not only the UNP, but some of their own leaders are canvassing to prevent the flow of aid to Sri Lanka and also to thwart the GSP Plus relief granted by Europe. These elements are not rising up against him or the government but avenging the civilians. They can take revenge from him and not from the people. This was the message that he had to give them. The theme of the Convention was "Building a peaceful Country with local economy In the forefront". A highlight was the adoption of 10 resolutions. These included expressing gratitude to the international community, the All Party Conference proposals, granting relief by de-escalating the cost of living, proposal on eastern local polls and saluting the gallant soldiers. President Rajapakse handed over certificates to electoral organizers, who recruited the most number of members to the SLFP last year. 14 such organisers were honoured. The President further said the government was able to fulfill pledges given to the people through the Mahinda Chintana. 28 political parties supported him to become President and a pledge was given that the North and East will be liberated from the terrorists. He observed that the government had fulfilled this task, safeguarding the country's unitary status. Ministers Maithripala Sirisena and Jeyaraj Fernandopulle also expressed their views. Many SLFP activists and representatives of political parties supporting the government were present Tags: President Mahinda Rajapaksa UNP SLFP Sri Lanka East |

Minister Anura Yapa claims UNP is dislodged Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa has forecast that it is not very far the day the UNP would be dislodged from the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Districts..He said this is clear from the large number of party operatives joining the SLFP. Addressing a meeting to strengthen the SLFP branch office in Kahatagasdigiliya, the Minister opined that UNP activities in the Anuradhapura have come to an end. They are unable to come out. The party is now attempting to make kings. Their kings are no more in the administration. People's representatives are the party rulers. They are the servants of the people. He queried as to why the opposition was attempting to make kings. The people are upbeat about the Government's programme. Therefore, Minister Anura Yapa added that they have joined the Government.. UNP and JVP operatives ditching the parties Minister Maithripala Sirisena has pointed out that the cross over to the SLFP of a large number of UNP and JVP operatives of the Provinces where elections are to be held, clearly indicates the downfall of the two parties. The Minister said that UNP and JVP activists are joining in their thousands the Freedom Alliance to support the poll campaign for victory. The UNP has been completely washed away. The JVP is embroiled in a serious crisis. The Minister claimed that the people of the country have taken a firm stand that they should be with the Alliance, the SLFP and the Government. This he attributed to the large numbers joining the Alliance. He expressed concern that the JVP was particularly intimidating their regional leaders who are supporting the Alliance. They are being threatened with death. Many such incidents have been reported from Polonnaruwa. He called on the JVP not to intimidate those who are joining the Freedom Alliance at the regional and village levels. Minister Mervin and goons attack Sirasa journalists in SL Minister Mervin Silva's goons assaulted the Sirasa media crew that had gone to report the ceremonial opening of the second phase of the Jeyaraj Fernandopullai Memorial flyover in Kelaniya and seized the two video cameras they had right inside the venue of the function. As the cameramen were getting ready to record the declare opening of the bridge by Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka, the Minister came there and ordered them to go away. Then the goons of the Minister came to the scene, assaulted the cameramen and seized their cameras. While a Police Superintendent was observing the incident, at least the police security personnel who were there for his security did not come to the rescue of the journalists. The two video cameras belonging to a Sirasa TV have been found in a nearby abandoned land, police say. Police spokesman, SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said that no arrests have been made so far regarding the incident. Supporters of Minister Silva assaulted Sirasa TV's Sampath Varuna and Deepthi Ranasinghe who went to cover the opening. Varuna is currently receiving treatment at Ward No. 72 of Colombo National Hospital. Minister Mervin Silva has not allowed the Sirasa Media Network to report the functions in Kelaniya since a long time. He threatened and chased away Sirasa journalists in several previous occasions as well. On 06.08.2008 General Secretary of the SLFP Maithripala Sirisena says he is not in a position to deal with his unruly ministerial colleague Mervyn Silva, and that God will take care of him. He was responding to questions at a media briefing in Colombo (Aug. 06th) on the government stance regarding Minister Silva's having attacked a Sirasa TV crew and snatched their cameras. However, journalists asked as to whether there was anyone in government lower than God who could be responsible for the Labour Minister's conduct. "The government is sorry about Minister Mervyn Silva's conduct. But, We cannot do anything. The ministerial subcommittee appointed by the president for the safety of the media is inquiring into this," he said. The SLFP General Secretary added that the president would take a decision on this committee's recommendation once he returns to the country from a visit to China. Is Sri Lanka really Divided ? Gathering at a London street yesterday (June 10th,2008 ), a section of Tamil and Sinhala Diaspora called upon the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE to stop violence, as President Mahinda Rajapakse was attending the Conference of Commonwealth Heads of State. The protest by 'Sri Lankans Against Terrorism' was led by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) against the LTTE and its acts of terrorism, and was held opposite the Commonwealth Secretariat in London. A Parallel protest was held at the same venue jointly by Tamil and international organizations calling Sri Lanka government to stop the war. The two protests held side by side on the Pall Mall were peaceful and lasted for about two hours amidst police presence. 'Sri Lankans Against Terrorism' comprising the Sri Lanka Peace Forum, the Tamil Peace Foundation-Sri Lanka, the Muslim Forum Actions Group of Sri Lanka, the Tamil Sangam-UK, Sri Lankans Without Borders called upon friends in the UK and the Commonwealth to assist in bringing democracy to the Northern Province still under the clutches of the Tamil Tigers and support democracy in Sri Lanka challenged by Tamil Tiger terrorism. They also called upon them to exert pressure on the Tamil Tigers to disarm and enter the democratic process and prevent them from raising funds in British and Commonwealth countries. While asking concerted action against Tamil Tiger front organizations, they called upon Commonwealth Heads of Government to support Rajapakse government's commitment to the strengthening of democracy and finding a political solution. The protest against the Sri Lankan government was organized by the British Tamils Forum, the Nava Sama Samaja Party (UK), the International Socialist Group Socialist Party, the Tamil Youth Organization, the South Asia Solidarity Group and the Solidarity for Peace. They called upon the government to stop the war, recognize Tamils' self-determination, and create a 'safe haven' to protect innocent Tamil civilians from indiscriminate aerial bombardment. Impose International arms embargo and economic sanctions (do not grant GSP +) and force Sri Lanka to cut war budget and feed the masses were among their demands. Hon Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle Killed by LTTE The government yesterday (06-April-2008) vowed that it wouldn't succumb to LTTE terrorism after a male suicide cadre assassinated Chief Government Whip Jeyaraj Fernandopulle (55) at Weliweriya, Gampaha as he flaged off a marathon at 7.45 am. Fernandopulle held the post of the SLFP Treasurer at the time of his death and was one of the staunchest defenders of the ruling coalition both in and outside Parliament. A senior security official described the suicide cadre a human claymore mine. "It was a directional blast and hit the minister at point blank range. Even if he had worn a bullet proof west, he wouldn't have survived the blast. Both President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake issued statements vowing to militarily defeat the LTTE. Wickremanayake said the ongoing military campaign couldn't de derailed by political assassinations. Fernandopulle first entered Parliament in 1989 from the Gampaha District. In August 1994, he polled over 100,000 and came only second to the then Prime Ministerial candidate Mrs Chandrika Kumaratunga. After joining the government service in 1972 as a science and maths teacher he had entered Law College in 1974 and passed out in 1977. The Gampaha District MP died on the spot. Eleven others including the National Athletics Coach Lakshman de Alwis and K. A. Karunaratne lovingly called 'Marathon Karu' who had represented the country at overseas competition and had brought glory to the country were killed. About 85 men, women and children received injuries. Among the dead and the wounded were several competitors taking part in the competition sponsored by Nestle. Police headquarters said Fernandopulle had been protected by a contingent of elite police commandos and the Ministerial Security Division (MSD). His chief bodyguard Chief Inspector Kannangara of the STF who had been a veteran in counter insurgency operations in the East was among the dead. In fact, Fernandopulle's security had been beefed up after the LTTE assassinated Puttalam District MP and Nations Building Minister D. M. Dassanayake near Ja-ela police station on January 8 this year, an expert in VIP security said. A section of the security apparatus had asserted the claymore mine blast which ripped through Dassanayake's vehicle would have been meant for Fernandopulle, one of the strongest critics of the LTTE. Fernandopulle last week defended government's controversial decision not to disarm the breakaway LTTE group TMVP. The outspoken politician said the TMVP would continue to retain arms as long as the LTTE posed a threat to the breakaway group.
