SSG #5/5, Susquehanna S Gaugers, 4th Annual Steam Up, 4/2008 1. This YouTube video shows the Susquehanna S Gaugers (aka SSG) 4th annual "Steam Up" held April 4 & 5, 2008. The "Steam Up" is a 2 day event held, where members probably best described as "hard core S gaugers" get together and "do their thing" in an isolated barn. [===] 2. ABOUT THE LARGE LOOP AND THE 3 DIFFERENT 4-8-4 NORTHERNS RUN: Several members made a giant loop of American S Gauge sectional track using the 27" radius curves. They then literally "filled" the loop with 143 cars (mostly S Helper and some American Models), until the engine was "chasing" the caboose. They pulled this train with an American Models Northern, a new Lionel / Flyer Northern, and a vintage American Flyer Northern equipped with an SnS half-speed can motor. The American Models and the vintage Flyer could pull the train ok, but the new Lionel Flyer Northern seemed to be able to just barely pull it. --- The 307 Atlantic: Although we unfortunately did not get it on video, they ran a #307 Atlantic on this big loop -- and it was able to pull (struggling) somewhere around 70 cars, according to member Dave Van Gilder's memory.[====] [====] 3. OTHER: The video also shows an amazing feat of wiring by another member, to create a layout containing both an automated reverse loop and an automated passing siding. Also, a small loop of track was set up on a table, to demonstrate the use of a RailRoad Concepts (rr-concepts.com) "Switching Interface Module" to control an automatic block controlling 2 trains on the loop. --- NOTE: Near the end of the video, that shows an automatic block control operating on a table, there is a reference to a separate video for the automatic block -- Please note, that as of 4/8/08, this video is yet to be made. Beneficial Modification of the Bedini SSG? For more info check out http://www.energeticforum.com/renewable-energy/364-bedini-sg-11.html Really simple. All i've done is stuck a relay coil in series with the potentiometer. Effects: Reduced amp draw (about 33% less on my model) No Self Resonance Very slow acceleration. Approx. equal top speed. It seems to be beneficial since the coils are pulsing at the same frequency but are using less amps. I haven't got any conclusive results yet about wether it benifits battery charging. the relay is not important... all you need is the coil... It apparently effects the inductional qualities of the trigger. The result being shorter pulses. As the trigger signal hits the relay coil, the relay coil forms a magnetic field which delays the signal reaching the base of the transistors. So because it is pulsing later after the rotor magnet has passed over the coil, the pulse is much shorter... though not sure why I am getting the same speed from the rotor... it SHOULD slow the motor down but it doesn't. A few things to point out. in the second demonstration (without the relay coil) that is the lowest amp draw possible. however with the relay coil in the circuit, I can get the motor to operate at less than 200ma but not as fast.
