Saddle graft follow up Here, in the third week of May, is a recently grafted baby apple tree shopwing the necessary follow up work. This basicaly consists of weeding (everything grows so fast at this time of year) and cutting away any shoots which come away from below the graft union. This as I show is best done with an upward stroke of a very sharp knife, this gives a cleaner cut that secateu4s, the soft new growwth will slice off easily. Work slowly and be careful not to slice the bark. The polythene grafting ties will be carefully removed later, in a month or 2, once the union is sound. Fruitwise apple tree grafting, the saddle graft Demonstration of one of the simplest and most useful techniques for grafting fruit trees. A 'pencil' of the scion wood, variety Queen Cox in this case, is used from storage, these need to be cut while the wood is winter-dormant e.g. February, and stored cool and not too dry. I usually put them in a plastic bag in the fridge. LABEL carefully. The right time to graft is bud burst to early green leaf, roughly April. This was done on the last day of a warm southern English March. Any very sharp knife with a thin blade will do, my favourite is the Opinel 'inoxidable'(stainless) number 6 (number refers to size, Opinel make a range of knives.) My one has a walnut handle and I bought it in Bayeux, which is completely irrelevant! it must feel comfortable in your hand. The knife must be sharp enough to cut you badly or it is not sharpe enough for purpose, so be careful. Note the trick of locking thumbs together and levering the knife through the wood, it reduces the risk of slipping and cutting yourself. Practice with waste wood (e.g. prunings) to get the fit right. This technique really works well, I'll prove it! NB the rootstocks here are MM106, and are growing in a row where I cut down some unwanted and over-large rootstocks and allowed new growths to shoot up from the stump. I then earthed these up and selected the best growths to make my own vehgetatively propagated rootstocks. This is a good way to produce new trees, but the saddle graft cn be used equally well to top work over an established tree to a different variety. Day VI Under Saddle This is Ozzy's sixth time under saddle. Today we introduced a new element--the dressage whip. In hand, Ozzy has been taught that a soft tap on the shoulder means to move forward, (see "Ozzy's Fourth Lesson) so I decided to incorporate it into his under saddle training. At first, Mel was kind enough to "unstick" us, but then when she would let go of the rein, Ozzy would stop and refuse to move. So, I hopped down and grabbed the whip. Just feeling it on his shoulder helped him to understand that the goal was to move forward and...well, here are the results! On another note... I know my stirrups are 100% too short. I was trying out a "new" (used) saddle. The saddle is owned by a friend of mine who is close in height, so I thought I'd be okay (and it was 1478394728943 degrees out that day so I was being lazy). Well, not really! Haha! RILEY PUCKETT-BOOTS & SADDLE From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search George Riley Puckett (May 7, 1894 - July 14, 1946) was a country music pioneer, born in Alpharetta, Georgia, USA. An accident during infancy left him blind. He sang and played guitar and banjo. He was first heard on the radio as a part of Clayton McMichen's Hometown Band; he was also a member of Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers. Puckett's most famous songs were 'Ragged but Right' and 'Darky's Wail'. His dynamic single-string guitar playing, featuring dramatic bass runs, earned for him an enviable reputation as an instrumentalist. Many aspiring guitarists who followed him have studied and copied his style. Although he was an accomplished musician on several instruments, his singing was most responsible for establishing him as an important figure in the history of country music. Riley Puckett was one of the nationally known pioneer country music artists who gained experience and exposure at the Georgia Old-Time Fiddlers' Conventions,Courtesy of Juanita McMichen Lynch,held in Atlanta between 1913 and 1935. His vocalizing was a regular feature at the Georgia Old-Time Fiddlers' Conventions. Newspaper reporters covering these events referred to him as the "Bald Mountain Caruso" in admiration of his renditions of such songs as "When You and I Were Young, Maggie" and "Sleep, Baby, Sleep." For several years Puckett played and sang with the Home Town Boys, a string-band ensemble composed of Atlanta-area musicians. They made their debut on Atlanta's six-month-old radio station, WSB, on September 18, 1922. Until going off the air in 1926, they remained one of the station's most popular acts. In 1924 Puckett accompanied fiddler Gid Tanner to New York, where, on March 7 and 8, they recorded twelve songs and tunes for the Columbia Phonograph Company. They were the first country-music artists to record for that firm. These recording sessions yielded vocal selections by Puckett and fiddle tunes by Tanner. One of Puckett's songs, "Rock All Our Babies to Sleep," established him as probably the first country-music artist to yodel on records. Yodeling was employed as an embellishment by numerous country music vocalists well into the 1940s. Puckett was a charter member of the influential string band Gid Tanner and His Skillet Lickers and continued to record with the group through their last session in 1934. Puckett recorded as a solo artist into the early 1940s, creating a discography of more than 200 records on such labels as Columbia, Decca, and Bluebird. His repertoire included novelty songs, religious songs, traditional folk songs, cowboy songs, and ballads from the field of popular music. In addition to making records, he appeared in stage shows and worked on radio stations in Atlanta and other Georgia cities, as well as selected eastern and midwestern cities.
