McCain-Petraeus: How Sarah Palin Dole Paul's Alaska to Obama #62 - Most Viewed (Today) - Gurus #69 - Most Viewed (This Week) - Gurus #95 - Most Viewed (This Month) - Gurus John Nance Garner, who held the position of vice-president under Franklin Roosevelt, memorably dismissed the job as "not worth a pitcher of warm spit". Actually, that is the sanitised version of his comment. There are plenty of people who believe that the original version referred to a different bodily liquid. Put it this way: he might have been taking the spit out of this office. John McCain, by contrast, has to regard it far more seriously. He is within a few days of becoming the de facto nominee of the Republican Party. Mike Huckabee is enjoying his swansong, but after the primaries in Maryland and Virginia tomorrow this contest will be over. The Democratic dogfight will continue for some weeks yet, with the calendar favouring Barack Obama throughout February then Hillary Clinton in March and probably April. If Democrats are lucky, this race will be settled in Ohio and Texas on March 4. If those states split in their verdicts, then Pennsylvania on April 22 will serve as the Gettysburg. While all that is going on, the one matter of interest on the Republican side is whom Mr McCain will opt to put forward as vice-president. Ladbrokes has already opened a book on the subject, with Mr Huckabee installed as favourite and Charlie Crist, the Governor of Florida, and Tim Pawlenty, Governor of Minnesota, next. The competition, though, is totally open. No one has a compelling claim. It is, however, an even more important decision for Mr McCain than usual for presidential candidates for three reasons. The first is that George W. Bush, via Dick Cheney, has revolutionised the post itself. To be US vice-president was, as Nance Garner implied, to have the largest non-job on the planet. Even when the present President's father was VP under Ronald Reagan, it consisted mostly of attending the funerals of foreign dignitaries (Bush Sr quipped that "you die, I fly" was the vice-presidential motto). When Dan Quayle was VP he virtually had to beg the White House to provide him with chores to do (this was wisely resisted). Mr Cheney, on the other hand, has shown that the vice-president can be the deputy president and has acted accordingly. It is hard to conceive that this portfolio will retreat to irrelevance again. Secondly, to put it bluntly, there is Mr McCain's age. He will be 72 come polling day. The chance that he might die in office is there and will be discussed. Whoever he selects to be a potential VP has to be perceived as capable of serving as commander- in-chief at a moment's notice. Finally, there is the politics of this election. The Democrats have the stardust factor this November. Mrs Clinton and Mr Obama have become huge figures. Their battle will make them seem yet bigger as it intensifies. If she wins (still the more likely result in my view), Mr Obama will have done well enough to compel her to offer him the No 2 slot in order to preserve party unity (despite their obvious personal animosity and the fact that it does not make much strategic sense) and I suspect that he will accept it. If he wins, the reverse is less likely; but if it is not Mrs Clinton then the temptation to put another woman senator or governor on the ticket will be vast. This is what Mr McCain must assume that he will be facing. Tags: McCain Petraeus Sarah Palin Dole Paul's Alaska Mrs Clinton |

"You'll struggle to find any other on-board footage quite as vivid as this. If you crave a release from some of the sanitised nonsense that passes for sport nowadays, look no further." War and Truth - 59 min documentary March 2006 The invasion of Iraq was the most extensively reported conflict in history. Over 2,000 journalists descended on the country to send the story home. But paradoxically, most of what they saw never made the news. This thought-provoking documentary reveals how the war was sanitised and repackaged for the American public. By contrasting coverage of Iraq with the reporting of previous conflicts, it assesses the wider implication of muting the press and questions the role of the media. BodySong (c.1997) The Video & Text The BodySong uses a kind of incantatory/lecture form of text utilising medical terminology concerned with the horizon of bodily interiority (the unseen inside). This treats the body as a kind of tube through which the nomenclature wanders, territorialising the body into zones of disembodied light (the Eye) and corporeal-but-sanitised filth (the excrementality of the digestive tract). This is in counterpoint to the `extrospective' texts concerned with what might be termed `external horizonality' (e.g. The Mount, with its specific references to romantic landscape painting and its Burkean notions of the Sublime). The visuals present a kind of medical lecture in which the orator is eventually subsumed within and excreted from the interior of the corpus being illustrated. The Music The BodySong is comprised of two very different entities: Gregorian chant and images of the body. Writing in a style that is usually associated with God and Purity and using a text that deals with excretions creates a kind of critical tension, where the nature of both forms of text is almost subverted by the other. The opening of the piece starts with two alternating chords, with the voice ascending through these chords with the appropriate scales. This then segues into a rather humorous A.M.E.B. (Australian Music Examination Board) melody. The manner in which the text is chanted is based on recitation tones (which are a formal derivative of Western sacred music). As a consequence the rhythm of the text was left to the singer. However each recitation tone functions as a tonic and often modulates to an augmented fourth above or below this. The augmented fourth is not usually associated with sacred music because of its traditionally demonic associations. Note: This was the 'blurb' from the "Liminal" interactive CD-ROM (2000). The video was made on a Mac in c.1997-8, using 3D animation and compositing, with footage shot in St. Petersburg, Russia. The music was composed by Glenn Rogers, performed by Alistair Foote, Penelope Reynolds and Samantha Podeu. Audio production by Alistair Dudfield. © Peter Morse 1997. Huge Pteradactyls A visit to the hospital will never be the same again! Amongst the sanitised surroundings of an old military hospital, "The Suit" (Michael Atkinson) finds himself plagued by visions of huge pterodactyls and other strange phenomena. Panic sets in as he desperately attempts to flee from the endless corridors. But are these visions real or a figment of his own twisted imagination? Will "The Suit" escape or will the visions - the crazed lab technician "Beaker" (Matthew Share) and his subject "The Gimp" (Daniel Edmunds) - ensnare him forever? Fear has a new face - and it ain't pretty... 479. The Big Rock Candy Mountain (Harry McClintock) This song is a turn of the century hobo ballad possibly inspired by a broadside ballad called "An Invitation to Lubberland", first printed in 1685. It is generally attributed to Harry McClintock (8 October 1882 - 24 April 1957), though he failed in a lawsuit when he attempted to enforce copyright. The song was first recorded by Harry McClintock (also known as Haywire Mac) in 1928, but reached a larger audience when released by Burl Ives in 1949. A version by Dorsey Burnette (1960) became a big hit, and there has been a recent revival when the McClintock recording was used in the movie, "O Brother Where Art Thou?" (2000) McClintock first sang the song as a street busker in 1897. The song originally described a child being recruited into hobo life by tales of a "big rock candy mountain". Such recruitment actually occurred, with hobos enchanting children with tales of adventure to lead them astray. The song was cleaned up considerably before McClintock recorded it, and it has since been sanitised further to make it a children's song, with all references to cigarette trees, streams of alcohol and lakes of gin and whiskey eliminated. The cigarettes were probably the last to go as in those days they were recommended by doctors as useful for calming the nerves! A variation of the song, under the title, "The Appleknocker's Lament", was collected in 1927 by the Library of Congress. The Burl Ives version of this song was one of my favourite recordings from my parents' collection of 78s when I was a child, and certainly one of the songs that introduced me to the wonderful world of folk music. My rendition here is based on that Burl Ives recording, though I think he did fewer verses. Tags: folk song hobo bum big rock candy mountain haywire mac burl ives |
