Eric David Harris was born in Wichita, Kansas. Dylan Bennet Klebold was born in Lakewood, Colorado. According to early accounts of the shooting, Harris and Klebold were unpopular outsiders and frequent targets of bullying at their high school. They and their group of friends and/or people they knew had often been the target of bullying at Columbine, a fact that has been agreed upon by most investigators to have been the root of their anger. It was 11:19 a.m. on April 20, 1999—Hitler's 110th birthday—when Erik Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire at Columbine High School near Littleton, Colorado. Planning to kill most of the 400-plus students eating at the time, the pair planted two twenty-pound bombs in the school cafeteria. Then they waited outside the building, hoping to pick off blast survivors as they staggered out. When the bombs failed to detonate, the pair stormed into the cafeteria and opened fire. Forty minutes later, twelve students and a teacher lay lifeless; another twenty-three students were wounded—many gravely. Harris and Klebold also were dead of self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Police worked into the next day to find and deactivate the thirty bombs the pair had planted throughout the school. The Columbine High School massacre is considered to be the United States' deadliest school shooting, and its second deadliest attack on a school, after the Bath School disaster. Missing the signs of emotional bullying could have deadly consequences. Some 75 percent of the teenage perpetrators of school shootings report having felt persecuted and ostracized by other students. Taped shortly before the deadly attack, Harris tells the video camera that he was continually picked on about "my face, my hair, my shirts." Klebold talks about "the stuck-up kids" who "ripped" on him over the years and warns them that they're going to pay for the years of abuse he endured. A post-massacre investigation by the Washington Post concluded that bullying at Columbine was "rampant and unchecked." Many adolescents face being potential victims of violence in their communities, schools and homes on a daily basis. For some young people, those external threats create a hopelessness and depression that can lead to suicidal thoughts or actions. The spike in teen suicides in the United States is staggering. In 1950 the rate of suicide for 15-19 year-olds was 2.7 per 100,000. Two generations later, in 1990, the rate had increased to 11:1; a jump of more than 300 percent. Current statistics suggest that a young person in America attempts to take his or her life every 42 seconds. Though few would argue that bullying alone is to blame, the current literature includes many references to students being driven to suicide by peer abuse. In 2003, the journal Adolescence published a study on bullying and victimization which describes how "exposure to repeated insults and rejection by peers can generate deadly results such as suicide or homicide." Clearly, ongoing victimization can create or exacerbate adolescent depression and low self-esteem, perhaps raising the risk of a suicide attempt. Bullying is not isolated only in schools. School Violence School Violence: This video was created as a introduction to a speech on "The Effectiveness of Violence Prevention Programs in Reducing School Violence". In the spring of 1999, the Columbine High School massacre horrified the nation and catapulted the issue of school violence into the national spotlight. Since then, school officials, parents, legislators, psychologists, and law enforcement officials have been scrambling to find solutions to this very serious problem. Many schools have implemented violence prevention programs, which target students' behaviors, attitudes, perceptions, and/or personalities in an effort to reduce aggressive tendencies and foster nonviolent responses to life difficulties. What, exactly, do such programs entail? Are they effective? A comprehensive review of the published empirical literature revealed considerable variation in program design and some evidence of program effectiveness. Surprisingly, few controlled studies have been conducted, and many have been fraught with methodological problems. The implications of these findings for researchers and policy makers are discussed.
