Boston Kiltics Nova Scotia Celtic Fiddle Dance Story & Song We are four Bostonians who perform celtic folk music from Nova Scotia. We all have at least one parent from Nova Scotia and spent lots of time there growing up. We also embrace being from Boston and have been influenced by the rich Irish traditions of our area. Our fiddler Doug Lamey is the grandson of Boston Cape Breton fiddling legend Bill Lamey. He's been playing since he was a kid and has studied with some of the greats from both the Cape Breton tradition (Buddy MacMaster) and Irish fiddle scene (Tommy Peoples). http://www.douglamey.com/ We are lucky to have two of the best stepdancers in the Boston area, Pam Campbell and Christine Morrison. Pam is the daughter of fiddling legend John Campbell. Christine is the daughter of Peggy Morrison who is president of the Gaelic Club in Watertown, MA. Pam & Christine have been dancing together for 16 years and have shared the stage with Natalie MacMaster and Ashley MacIsaac to drop some names. I sing in both English and Scottish Gaelic. I play guitar and Irish Tin whistle and make my living as a musician/storyteller. I am steeped in Irish music on my dads side of the family (Clifford's in Sliabh Luachra) and Scottish on moms side. I recieved my MA in Folklore from Memorial University in Newfoundland. http://www.cliffmcgann.com/ We've all played together informally over the years but are finally making it official. We've settled on the name The Boston Kiltics as it captures our love of Scottish folk music but also the fact we are from Boston and proud. This was recorded for a local TV station and is only our second official gig together. Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada The capital city of Nova Scotia, Halifax is blessed with one of the world's largest harbors. A year round port and the Maritimes main commercial center, it's a popular seacoast destination. Recent development has revitalized the downtown core, where you'll find the world's longest downtown boardwalk in Canada's most historic English city. Restored warehouses and waterfront buildings from the 19th century have been converted into a shopping arcade of charming boutiques and restaurants. Saving Health care in Nova Scotia I am a person living with a serious illness for some 24 years now. I should be dead, however I am not! We are protesting the Rodney MacDonald PC Government here in Nova Scotia.I have to drive two hours just to get a family doctor. Due to the nature of my illness I need doctor to close my home so do so many other people in Nova Scotia, due to the lack of professionalism in the local health care system by not paying people what their worth over working doctors and Nurses. I have been traveling to the City since 1990, and haven't seen the health care system completely denigrate over this fast. Something needs to be done; we need action before there is nothing left of health care. I am one disabled person among many in Nova Scotia. I will continue to protest for those who cannot even speak and my friends and families! I hope that this video can be a wake up to all of you in Nova Scotia, so we don't lose the one thing we need the most is health care for all our people this issue we should be able to come together on! This Government doesn't care about it's people that consider us low class for them to rule us. When in the hell did the government become about class they work for us the people last I check! We will let you all know how our story turn out no matter what happen to all us fighting for all you! Injustice hurt all us! For more information of why we fighting go to www.peoplestandup.ca our true story ! Thank you! farewell to nova scotia traditional folk song john rah vs. 1 The sun was setting in the west The birds were singing on every tree All nature seemed inclined for a rest But still there was no rest for me CHORUS: Farewell to Nova Scotia, the seabound coast Let your mountains dark and dreary be For when I am far away on the briny ocean tossed Will you ever heave a sigh and a wish for me vs 2 I grieve to leave my native land I grieve to leave my comrades all And my parents whom I held so dear And the bonny bonny lass that I do adore REPEAT CHORUS vs. 3 The drums they do beat and the wars do alarm The captains call, we must obey So farewell, farewell to Nova Scotia's charms For its early in the morning and I am far far away REPEAT CHORUS vs 4 I have three brothers and that are at rest Their arms are folded on their breasts But a poor simple sailor just like me Must be tossed and driven on the dark blue sea REPEAT CHORUS some information taken from http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com 'Farewell to Nova Scotia'. A sailor's lament sometimes identified as 'Nova Scotia Song'. Linda Christine Craig in her 'The Scottish origins of "Farewell to Nova Scotia"' (Dalhousie R, vol 58, 1978-9) shows that the song is derived from 'The Soldier's Adieu,' attributed to the Scottish weaver-poet Robert Tannahill (1774-1810), and that it is transformed into a sailor's song with an 'intensity which is completely absent from "The Soldier's Adieu"'.In the third quarter of the 20th century it became the best known of all Nova Scotia songs, partly because the Halifax CBC TV show 'Singalong Jubilee' (1961-74) used it as a theme and Catherine McKinnon recorded it (Something Old, Something New, Arc 256). Other recorded versions include those by Diane Oxner (Canadian Cavalcade CCLP-2005), Terry Kelly (Gun TKP-8391), Finnigan (Banana 1077), and Ian and Sylvia (Vanguard 23-24). Jack Sirulnikoff used it in his Nova Scotia Fantasy for band. G.V. Thompson published a version for choir or voice, with or without piano, in 1964 and an arrangement for band by Peter Riddle in 1978. Another choral version is included in Reflections of Canada. Tags: farewell to nova scotia traditional folk song john rah |

Nova Scotia Rodney MacDonald Top 10 to David Letterman A brave initiative by Rodney MacDonald, Nova Scotia's Conservative top dog. The Premier rode the wave of popularity provided by the smashing reviews of the recent Hollywood hit 'Juno' and its Halifax-based star: Ellen Page. Ellen appeared on David Letterman on January 3, 2008, and spoke a bit about Nova Scotia, prompting Letterman to announce that he would like to visit some day. And so, the Nova Scotia Provincial leader decided to send Letterman a more 'official' invitation. Visit http://issmatblog.wordpress.com for full comments and analysis of this video in addition to other interesting topics in Canadian politics, innovative marketing, and viral advertising initiatives. **Video lifted from the Nova Scotia Come To Life website (www.novascotialife.com).
