Dynamic sculpture with ferrofluid Sachiko Kodama's "Morpho Tower": "This work is conceptualized as an "organic tower." The magnetic fluid, with a smooth black surface that seems to draw you in, reaches the top of the tower, spreading like a fractal, defying gravity. The form and texture of the physical surface of the tower constantly alter between the hard iron core and the changing form of soft fluid. This is a dynamic sculpture, with reactable fluid surface". Interactive Kinetic Steampunk Sculptures by Marque Cornblatt For centuries the use of tools by humans has been used as a marker - one of several gauges of that particular quality that define humans as unique and self-aware beings. Over the millennia, the development and use of certain tools has effected the quality of life so profoundly, that one can scarcely imagine life without their use. Language, social structures, medicine, electricity, mass communication. There exists in our culture the promise of technological solutions to every need, problem and issue associated with the human condition, from the basic needs of food and shelter, to more sophisticated requirements of the human animal - fast food, financial credit, internet dating, artificial hearts, and MTV. Attempts to meet these needs with technology comes in a variety of forms - from AT & T providing lengthy and complex exchanges of information without the customer ever speaking with a live operator, to computer controlled medical implants monitoring and performing an increasing number of metabolic and physiological functions in the human body. The conceptual cornerstones of "that which makes humans unique" continue to be challenged and defeated. Internally, in the case of medical advancements, and externally - as demonstrated by the increasing number of "human" interactions which no longer have two humans participating. Identity and self-awareness are no longer the exclusive terrain of human beings. We live in the age of the "transhuman" being. Moscow Sculptures - Russia ly 2006 To most Muscovites, sculptor Zurab Tsereteli is the King of Kitsch. They're furious the Mayor of Moscow has commissioned dozens of large sculptures from him. "It's like an occupation of our Moscow by alien forms", complains one resident. Zurab Tsereteli's sculptors are difficult to avoid. His depiction of Peter the Great towers 96 metres above Moscow river. It's so widely hated, someone once tried to blow it up. But one of his biggest fans is the Mayor of Moscow who keeps commissioning new work. Tsereteli's sculptors have literally redrawn Moscow's skyline. Tags: Russia Moscow Sculptures Art |

Arava Sculptures - Israel/Palestine July 2006 The desert of Arava in Israel is an arid desolate place, but for Australian sculptor Andrew Rogers, it's a source of inspiration. With the help of local architects and masons, the artist has created geoglyphs, massive land sculptures that are found in ancient cultures throughout the world. In a land which has seen the birth of religions and civilisations, stone has long been central to the relationship with God. Sacred stones represent a direct link with the divine but they're also the source of contention and conflict. This duality lies at the heart of Rogers's art. His aim is to celebrate the human spirit overcoming adversity. He is also interested in the relationship between the sculpture, the site and the environment. Most of his creations blend harmoniously into the landscape and can be best seen from the air while others tower dramatically over the surrounding desert. This beautifully shot film both reveals the original vision of an artist and the raw beauty of the Arava desert. Tags: Israel palestine Arava Sculptures Art Beauty Desert Monuments |
