Al Arqam - Sect With No Name - Malaysia Asari Mohammed, the founder of Malaysia's Al Arqam Islamic sect, denounced his own teachings after spending seven weeks in government detention. Officially, the Al Arqam sect does not exist. Banned by the Malaysian authorities it stands accused of training suicide squads, keeping sex-slaves and defying true Islamic teaching. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamid explains his reasons for the ban. A prominent lawyer says the government fears the political power of Al Arqam's 100,000 supporters far more than their suspected religious deviation. The sect continues without its name and thousands of Malaysians still live in model communes. The sect continues to run successful businesses, practice polygamy and spread the forbidden fruit of Al Arqam. Tags: al arqam islamic sect malaysia journeyman picture |

Texas Sect Children, Happy Parents Reunited PlusTexas Sect Children, Happy Parents ReunitedTexas Sect Children, Happy Parents ReunitedThe Associated PressParents awaiting the release of children taken into state custody during a raid of a polygamist group's ranch may need to wait a few days because so many parents are showing up at foster homes simultaneously, a sect leader said Tuesday. (June 3)14:03:20SOT: HUMBLY, GREATFUL An emotional day as hundreds of children taken from a Texas polygamous ranch are being reunited with their parents. Some parents traveled across the sprawling state to foster facilities to pick up their kids. State officials say half of the roughly 430 children seized during a raid are back with their families. And the remaining children will be reunited over the coming days. 14:03:15SOT: I THANK YOU FOR THE KINDNESS. AND I EXPRESS GRATITUDE TO THE PEOPLE HERE. The children were returned to their families after the state Supreme Court ruled the early April seizure wasn't justified. State officials believed the children were at risk because church teachings pushed underage girls into marriage and sex. The church has denied any children were abused. And members said they're being persecuted for their religion. In the meantime, the court has ruled the parents must stay in Texas. They also must attend parenting classes and allow the children to be examined as part of any abuse investigation. It's not clear how many families will return to the ranch right away. Many of the parents have purchased or rented homes around the state. And some attorneys have advised their clients to stay away from the compound for now-- although most families reportedly want to return. ___ ___, The Associated Press. (July 28)Five members of a West Texas polygamist sect turned themselves in to authorities Monday. These men-- along with Warren Jeffs, the already-jailed church leader-- face charges child sexual abuse charges. Officials aren't releasing details of what the men were accused of doing. But the charges stem from a state investigation into allegations the sect forced underage girls into marriage and motherhood with much older men. The charges were the first since this raid in April which swept more than 440 children into foster care. The children were later returned home after the state Supreme Court said officials had overreached in seizing custody of the children. A church spokesman previously said the indicted sect members would cooperate. And previously said they don't believe the evidence against the men is "credible." The accused were charged with one count each of sexual assault of a child. If convicted, the men could be sentenced anywhere from 5 years to life in prison. Their bond was set at 100-thousand dollars each. ___ ___, The Associated Press. Tags: polygamist retreat arrested from west texas sect |

Muslim Sect Fears Religious Violence in Indonesia ANCHOR: Indonesia is home to the world's largest Muslim population. But while over 85 percent of Indonesians are Muslim, Indonesia also has large Christian, Hindu, and Buddhist communities, which are protected under the constitution by freedom of religion. But now, life is becoming increasingly difficult for another of Indonesia's minority religious groups, the Ahmadis. The Ahmadis are an Islamic sect, but face discrimination from hardline Islamic groups, who have recently attacked their mosques and sympathizers. Here's more: STORY: At Jakarta's national monument earlier this month, a hardline Islamic group beat up and injured participants of a peaceful rally calling for tolerance of the Ahmadis, or followers of the Islamic sect Ahmadiyya. [Sumarto, Ahmadiyya Follower]: "We pray here even more intensely because we have been treated unjustly." Indonesia's top religious council has declared Ahmadiyya a deviant sect, and hardline groups want them banned. And the Indonesian Vice president Jusuf Kalla has imposed restrictions on its followers. [Jusuf Kalla, Vice President of Indonesia]: "They can practice in their mosque. The only thing, they cannot do is preach to others." Observers say freedom of religion in Indonesia is being tested. Last week, a ministerial decree warned that Ahmadis could face five years in jail for quote 'tarnishing religion,' but it stopped short banning the sect altogether. Liberal Indonesians slammed the government's decision, saying it had caved in to pressure from Islamic hardliners. The hardline groups also represent a small minority of Indonesians, but use violence to make their voices heard. And now the Ahmadis are worried about a backlash from hardline groups. Ahmadiyya has about 200 million followers around the world, 500,000 of which are in Indonesia. Members of the group have often been the target by Islamic hardliners in other countries, including Bangladesh and Pakistan, and now, increasingly in Indonesia.
