(June 12)Yahoo's efforts to revive takeover talks with Microsoft have reached a dead end and the Internet pioneer's shares plunged on the news, falling more than 10 percent to finish at $23.52. According to statements from the two companies, Yahoo tried to persuade the software giant to revive its $47.5 billion offer - about $33 per share - but the software maker said no. [Notes:SOT S&P Equity Analyst] The move now sets the stage for the Internet pioneer to turn over a piece of its advertising platform to online search leader Google. [Notes:SOT S&P Equity Analyst] Wall Street's disenchantment comes at a particularly bad time for Yahoo and its board of directors, which is trying to fend off a shareholder mutiny led by Carl Icahn. The activist investor has vowed to replace the board over the way it handled the Microsoft negotiations. Yahoo's annual meeting is scheduled to take place on August 1st. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) Tags: yahoo microsoft talks shares plunge |

Market Report - Shares Rally on Dollar, Oil ZHANG: Asian shares took heart Monday from a stronger dollar and lower oil prices, which boosted investor confidence in regional exporters. Crude oil fell to around $134 a barrel, as Saudi Arabia prepared to boost output to its highest in decades to try to keep pace with demand. Across the region, energy-related shares like Australia's Woodside Petroleum and Japan's Nippon Oil declined, but most major stock indices were higher. In Japan, Mitsubishi Motors gained with the yen's decline against the greenback. Mitsubishi was also helped by a report that it would forge an electric vehicle tie up with France's Peugeot Citroen. Building stocks like Tohoku Misawa Homes also rose after a weekend earthquake rocked northern Japan. Korean exporters like tech giant Samsung rose on U.S.-linked optimism, boosting the KOSPI on the day. Hong Kong shares rallied from the benchmark's lowest close since March 25, with Sinopec rising as falling oil prices are expected to improve refining margins. Market Report - Asian Shares Down WONG: Asian stocks fell and government bonds rose Tuesday as investors said the U.S. takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac addressed some risks from the financial crisis but had not solved it. On Monday, U.S. mortgage rates fell after the government seized control of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, raising hopes the plan would provide at least temporary respite from troubles in housing and credit markets. Japan's benchmark Nikkei fell, with exporters sliding on a firmer yen and uncertainty over the global economy. Oil prices fell back toward a five-month low, resuming a near two-week slide, as a resurgent U.S. dollar drove investors away from commodities and OPEC appeared set to sit tight on a strong output policy. The U.S. dollar edged up to a one-year peak against a basket of currencies, riding a boost in confidence in the U.S. financial sector after the government seized control of the two mortgage giants. On the political front, Thailand's ruling People Power Party said it would re-nominate Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej as premier if a court disqualified him for hosting TV cooking shows while in office. Thailand's benchmark share index was down with the domestic political crisis continuing to unsettle foreign investors in particular. Tags: ntd ntdtv news |

Market Report - Asia Shares Drop Yet Again ZHANG: Asia stocks dropped for a fourth consecutive session on Wednesday, with sky-high oil prices and inflation woes punishing markets across the region. Japan's Nikkei fell 1.3 percent (13,286 ). The benchmark index is now on track to post its longest losing streak in more than 40 years. Japanese carmakers were among the big losers following news that U.S. auto sales have hit a 15-year low due to soaring gasoline prices and a weakening economy. Fresh data also showed that car giant Toyota trailed American rival GM in June, with truck sales badly hurt in the United States. Food purveyors were also under the spotlight after U.S. coffee giant Starbucks said it plans to close 600 underperforming U.S. stores to help cope with an economic downturn. Starbucks is looking to Asia to help boost growth. But other food firms in Asia are also now facing pressure of high commodity prices and weakening consumer demand. Shares in established Japanese fast food firm Yoshinoya fell to a nine-year low after it posted a 70 percent fall in operating profit for the latest quarter. Tech and electronic shares were as badly hurt as other sectors. In Korea, shares in LG Electronics tumbled after a major U.S. brokerage cut its target price on the firm because of weaker than expected handset sales. The news follows a similar move in Sony shares earlier this week after signs that its high-end mobile phone venture with Ericsson was also showing weakness. market report - asian tech shares rise Anna Chan: Asian shares mostly rose Friday, cheered by technology sector optimism. Intel's share gain overnight boosted Japanese tech stocks like Advantest. The Nikkei climbed, also aided by Fast Retailing, which hiked its full year profit forecast by 10%. Even Mizuho Financial revised down its net profit forecast. That came after it wrote down $3.9 billion in sub-prime related trading losses at its brokerage gained on the day. Takeda Pharmaceutical declined, after its $8.8 billion acquisition of U.S. biotech company Millennnium. In Seoul chipmakers like Hynix and Samsung Electronics gained, while the KOSPI advanced. Taiwan's main index rose to a 5-month high, lifted by cellphone shares such as HTC. In Australia shares dipped for a fourth straight session, as falls in oil and metals prices pressured resource firms like Woodside Petroleum. Oil retreated after testing a record high above $112 a barrel. Tags: ntd ntdtv news market report asia shares intel nikkei mizuho financial takeda seoul hynix samsung taiwan |

Market Report - Asia Shares Mostly Higher CHEN: Asian shares rose cautiously Friday, led by markets in Taiwan and Korea that hit year highs. Taiwan's benchmark share index hit a 2008 peak on hopes of improved ties with China. High Tech Computer, the world's top smart phone maker, gained over 4 percent. In Korea, the KOSPI inched higher, touching a year peak as chip giant Hynix Semiconductor followed U.S. peers higher. The Australian share benchmark rose, led by top miner BHP Billiton, which jumped to a new record. Japan's Nikkei dipped, breaking a four-day winning streak and ignoring better-than-expected economic growth in the last quarter. Supporting the market, Mizuho Financial gained over 2 percent, after the bank said it aimed to buy back some $3.8 billion of its own shares this year. Market Report - Asia Shares Lower on Financials ZHANG: Asian shares were mostly lower Wednesday, as talk of foreign buying interest was offset by weakness in regional financial shares. In Japan, the Nikkei declined, with steelmaker JFE lower amid plans for a blast furnace joint venture with a Korean steel firm and a Brazilian mining company in that country. On the political front, the upper house of parliament confirmed Masaaki Shirakawa as central bank governor, but rejected a government nominee for deputy governor. In Australia, top miner BHP Billiton firmed again on market talk that China's Baoshan Iron and Steel was looking to buy a stake. BHP shares hit their highest in four months after the news, but a weaker financial sector kept overall Australian sentiment flat, leading to a loss in the benchmark index. Taiwan stocks dipped slightly, but China shares tumbled, with the Shanghai index down more than 5 percent. Meanwhile, South Korean financial markets were closed for a general election.
