Plum Island Shipwreck December 14, 2002. Drenched is the best description for me after this video. And, a ruined waterlogged camera that will only work for a little longer and take only a few more videos. It's December, cold, and stormy. The night before I'd been at the winter celebrations in Newburyport, Massachuestts. Every year the first two Fridays of December, Newburyport stays open. The stores have munchies out, wassail, cider, munchies, chocolate thingies, popcorn, chips and dip. People walking down the street singing Christmas Carols. It is festive. I go there every year. At one store I hear someone talking about a shipwreck on Plum Island. Plum Island is an actual island connected to Newbury/Newburyport by a bridge. "Where's the shipwreck?" I'm given very vague directions. Somewhere on the beach. As it turns out my directions are a couple of miles off, but at least they gave me the correct directions down the beach so I will be walking in the right direction for those miles. Even if it is in a storm. What do you do the next day? It has gotten colder and stormier. Do you stay in a warm home? Nope. Hop in that car, drive to Plum Island, and with excellent directions ("Oh, it's somewhere on the beach) walk the miles down the beach to the shipwreck. Start videoing. Tide coming in. Every wave that bursts over the shipwreck sends spray that lands on me. Tide still coming in and I'll have to back up. It's cold. It's mighty windy. It's cold. I'm being battered by the ocean. Finally, it is lonely and desolate. The shipwreck, the wind, the ocean, the lonely beach. The waves pounding. The lowing sky. A very timeless feeling. Those waves have been crashing on this beach for eons. This time there's something in their way. Most often they just crash. There's been other storms, other ships that have wrecked. No loss of life in this one, though. But, is it ever cold. Eventually, it'll be bright, the shipwreck will be gone, the sand will be smoothed out, and there will be no sign there ever was a shipwreck here. Largest Shipwreck Treasure Find Ever - VOA Story An American company is in the process of determining the value of a haul of sunken treasure, thought to be the biggest ever discovered. Odyssey Marine Exploration says it is examining more than half-a-million coins from the shipwreck as part of a find that could net it around half a billion dollars. The bounty has sparked public interest in the controversial business of treasure hunting vy Odyssey Marine Exploration. "Black Swan is the code-name of a secret operation off the coast of Europe which may have discovered the biggest haul of shipwreck treasure ever found. Odyssey won't reveal the identity of the ship, or even when it sank, to avoid giving clues to other treasure hunters. Odyssey will only say it went down in international waters. In the crates are 17 tons of silver and gold coins and other valuables arriving in the U.S., destined for a secret location. Mark Gordon, from Odyssey Marine Exploration, says an expert in 17th century coins estimated the value of the haul. "He looked at a representative sample of the coins and in amongst the group that he saw he was able to determine that there were values ranging from $400 to $4,000 for individual coins, and the mean value of the group that he looked at was about $1,000," says Gordon. Those crates could hold about half a billion dollars. In the U.S., a big media splash about the "Black Swan" hoard has triggered a new fascination in pirate ships and treasure. Odyssey estimates there are some three million shipwrecks worldwide. The company combs the seabed using a special underwater vessel: operating it costs $35,000 a day. If treasure is found, the company determines if anyone may have a claim to it -- unlikely in the case of a pirate-ship -- then petitions a U.S. court to get ownership. Odyssey is the only publicly traded treasure-hunting company in the U.S., but the business is unpredictable. It reported a net loss of $3.8 million in the first quarter of 2007. Critics, such as the Institute of Field Archaeologists, accuse private companies like Odyssey of "ransacking" shipwrecks for profit. And Odyssey is in a legal wrangle with the Spanish government over the Black Swan treasure. Spain says it might be one of their galleons that went down in its territorial waters. But Odyssey says it will press on with its work - and has even teamed up with the Walt Disney Corporation to cater to the public appetite for sunken treasure. Diving - Straits of Mackinac - Cedarville Shipwreck CEDARVILLE Shipwreck Length: 588' Beam: 60' Depth: 40' - 107' Type: Steel Steam Freighter Lost: May 7, 1965 Built: 1927, River Rouge, Michigan; converted to self-unloader 1956-57; modified 1961 (reboilered and new stack) Location: Lake Huron, 3 miles east of Mackinac Bridge Description: How lost: This modern shipwreck is the result of controversial conduct by two ships. Carrying a cargo of limestone, the Cedarville was westbound when she ran into very heavy fog. The Cedarville continued moving relying on her radar and radio contact. The M.V. Topdalsfjord did not respond by radio resulting in confusion by the Cedarville officers. When the ships were near collision, the Cedarville attempted an emergency turn but was struck hard port amidships. She sank quickly, settling in two parts at approximately a 45-degree angle. The Cedarville was found at fault. Eight lives were lost. She was heavily salvaged because of her close proximity to the surface. Today, her cargo of limestone lies spilled on the lake floor alongside her unloader. Present condition: The Cedarville is in very good condition. While much of her ship stores and gear have been removed, she still has much to explore. Her cargo holds are very large, the pilothouse is easily accessible, the forward and stern crew quarters are intact, and her engine room is accessible. Diving - Straits of Mackinac - William Young Shipwreck WILLIAM YOUNG Length: estimated 148' Beam: N/A Depth: 100 - 120' Type: Schooner barge Lost:1891 Built: 1863, Marine City, Michigan Location: Lake Huron, 1.25 miles east of Mackinac Bridge Description: Note: This shipwreck was discovered in midsummer, 2002. There is a great deal still unknown about it. How lost: The Young was a former schooner bark converted to use as a tow barge. She was towing a cargo of coal when lost. She began taking on water and sank, probably in bad weather. No information now available on loss of life. Present condition: She struck bottom bow first resulting in damage to the bow. The top deck cabins are gone. The remainder of the hull is upright and in good condition. The holds are still full of coal eliminating any real penetration. The broken bow does, however, feature a "swimthrough" from the forward hatch to the anchors which still hang gracefully on each side. Because this wreck was not found earlier, it has not been looted and there is much to see. The ship's wheel, two anchors, a capstan, windlass, deadeyes, one mast, rigging and hardware can all be seen. A portion of the bow deck, perhaps broken off on impact, lies about 50' astern. Much more awaits discovery. Tags: Diving Straits of Mackinac William Young Shipwreck lake huron michigan |

53 Torrent Shipwreck Discovery, Boat Hoses, Scuba Diving Cat http://www.TheBoaters.TV EP 53 -- First up today: A Private Dive Team Discovers Wreckage of an American Ship That Sank 139 Years Ago Off South-Central Alaska Coast It was reported last Monday that a private dive team discovered the wreckage of an American ship that sank 139 years ago off the mainland of south-central Alaska. In 1868, the "Torrent," a 641-ton three-masted sailing bark, sank in Alaska's Cook Inlet after tidal currents rammed it into a reef. Aboard the vessel at the time were women, children and a battery of 130 U.S. Army soldiers who had come north to build the first U.S. military fort on the mainland of south-central Alaska. Documents from the period show that all passengers survived the accident. The vessel wreckage was actually first discovered back in July after a nearly two-year long search by a four-man dive team led by Steve Lloyd, a shipwreck historian and veteran of a half-dozen other shipwreck expeditions in Alaska. The group held back on announcing its discovery until this week so the state could take steps to preserve and protect the shipwreck, which is now being considered for listing in the National Registry of Historic Places. To learn more and see more incredible photos from the site, please head on over to Steve Lloyd's website at http://www.LostShipwrecks.com Steve Lloyd has also posted the video you are watching on YouTube, just uploaded last week and featuring footage of the wreckage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iy32BY-JstM Congratulations to Steve and his entire team for their determination in bringing the Torrent and its history to the surface. Next up: Knowing When and How to Purchase Replacement Hoses for Your Boat If you think that a hose is a hose is a hose is a hose, think again. As boating writers Gordon and Janet Groene point out, any broken hose on your boat spells TROUBLE, so it's important to replace hoses before they fail. When it comes to buying the right replacement hose in the right size and installing it to marine standards, we present some specs that the Groenes suggest you look for with regard to the following categories: * Temperature Rating * Pressure Rating * Suction Rating * Compatibility * Flexibility But most importantly, know that installing the wrong hose could cause breakdown or an accident, void your guarantee or reduce your insurance settlement. It's not a purchase to be taken lightly. Finally today: Crazy Video of Hawkeye -- The Scuba Diving (Get This!) Cat Gene Alba of Redding California built a special diving apparatus for his cat, Hawkeye, which allows the cat to spend up to one hour at a time underwater. Crazier still is that Hawkeye's owners is not his only diving companion ...there's also Alba's dog, Mutton!
