Albert King - Funk/Shun (♫) If the annals are ever logged as to who the most influential guitar greats of all time were, then there would be no question regarding the inclusion of the three "Kings" of the Blues: B.B., Freddie and Albert. There is little doubt of the impact that each of these artists brought to the future sounds of Blues, Soul and Rock 'n' Roll. Albert King was a master of the single-string attack and was intrigued by Blues performers that he heard while growing up outside of Memphis. In turn, he influenced a new generation of guitar players that would include the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Albert King was born Albert Nelson, on April 25, 1923, in Indianola, Mississippi. This was the same location known as the birthplace of his namesake Riley (B.B.) King, and though the two were not related, Albert would sometimes claim that B.B. was his half-brother. One of 13 children, King grew up learning the life of picking cotton on the plantations near Osceola, Arkansas, where the family moved to in 1931. His first introduction to music would be singing in church and listening to his father, Will Nelson, play guitar. Another early influence came from the family's records where a young Albert would spend hours attempting to copy the sounds of Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lonnie Johnson on his homemade cigar box guitars and diddley-bows. King obtained his first real guitar in 1942. He was fascinated by the playing of the Blues musicians that frequented nearby West Memphis, Arkansas, most notably the works of Robert Nighthawk and Elmore James, and Albert decided that playing this style of music would be his desired calling. King was a large man, standing 6-foot-4-inches and weighing well over 250 pounds. A natural left-hander, King taught himself to play the guitar upside-down while keeping the strings strung for a right-handed player and playing with his thumb as opposed to a pick. He was a moody man and known to carry a .45 in the band of his pants. He also disliked performing live with musicians he felt were his superiors, wanting the sole command of the stage just for himself. King played his final concert in Los Angeles on December 19, 1992. He died two days later at home in Memphis after suffering a sudden heart attack. After his funeral, a procession was led down Beale Street in a true New Orleans-style Jazz tradition, as the hearse bearing King's body was led by the Memphis Horns playing "When The Saints Go Marching In". King was laid to rest across the Mississippi River in the Paradise Gardens Cemetery in Edmondson, Arkansas, not far from where he spent his childhood. Albert King has been honored by The Blues Foundation with his induction into their Hall of Fame. Both "Born Under A Bad Sign" and "Live Wire / Blues Power" are also honored as Classics of Blues Recordings. But, the real honor for King is the love and everlasting respect that so many of his peers have given him. Stevie Ray Vaughan would call him "Daddy" and John Lee Hooker named him as one of his all-time favorite guitarists. Michael Bloomfield once said, "Albert can take four notes and write a volume. He can say more with fewer notes than anyone I've ever known." B.B. King stated in his autobiography "He wasn't my brother in blood, but he sure was my brother in Blues." Albert King's legend will live on. Every time a Blues or Rock combo is on stage, in an arena or small nightclub, or just playing in their garage and grinds into "Born Under A Bad Sign" or "Crosscut Saw", his influence will be shining true. Elite Shun Knife Review http://www.Shun-Knife.com Hey everybody, Steve Shue here for another addition of the Shun Knife Review. Okay, today we're going to be talking about the highest quality of the Shun Knives which is the Elite Shun Knife. Yeah, I know... the name kinda gives it away, but these knives are the elite of the elite. In the last episode we talked about the Classic Shun Knife which is the most popular, but the Shun Elite is the second most popular. They are very similar in most aspects, but there are a few distinctions I'd like to point out. First, the steel. If you'll remember in the last episode we mentioned that the Classic Shun is made of a VG-10 steel. However, the Elite is made of a higher premium grade of steel called SG-2. This is probably the most important and distinct difference between the two. SG-2 is a premium "powdered" alloy. As you may know, powdered steels are created thru a unique process that allows a uniform distribution of elements throughout the material. This creates a steel that can be made EXETREMELY hard and, therefore, wicked sharp. In all seriousness, they are the sharpest of all knives... in my opinion... period. Nothing compares. The SG-2 powdered steel is hardened to 64-66 Rockwell whereas most kitchen knives use steel that has a Rockwell hardness of 56-58. The steel is evenly blended, eliminating weak spots or soft spots or any other imperfections for that matter. The knife is then clad with stainless steel to provide strength, and flexibility and corrosion protection... not to mention the sleek look. The result in the end... well, sheer brilliance and knife production. They hold their edge several times longer than other comparable knives while providing superior performance throughout. Again, you can tell why these are my favorite of the Shun lines. They offer lifetime warranties just like the rest of the Shun Knives... and best of all, Shun offers to re-sharpen their knives for free for as long as you own them. That's a huge advantage over any other Japanese brands. In the end, I think Shun hit a home run with these knives. They've combined the best features of Japanese knives with a beautiful design and steepness of edge with a powdered steel blade... combined with the very attractive and form fitting features of the Pakka wood handle. Not only that, but this knife has remained sharp longer than many of the other brands I've tried throughout the years. I guess the only negative I have for this knife is the price. Just like the Classic Shun... they aren't cheap by any sense of the word. The Elite rings in at around $200 bucks. Wowzza! However, I'd spend that at the drop of a dime because I can attest to their sheer brilliance. In fact, I've fallen in love with them so much that I've decided to do this video. I mean really... I'm not THAT motivated... *laughs*... unless of course I really believe in something... and I believe in shun Knives. So if you're interested in purchasing a Shun Knife or are looking for additional information... I suggest you hop over to my blog at http://www.Shun-Knife.com... that's Shun-Dash-Knife-Dot-Com... that's my blog. It has information regarding the history of Shun Knives as well as a few entertaining stories and whatnot. Once you arrive at the site you'll also notice a few areas to order a Shun Knife. Alright, that's it for this episode... next time we'll be covering another popular Shun Knife... the Ken Onion Shun. Okay... until next time... stay sharp. http://www.Shun-Knife.com Tags: elite shun knife classic knives steve shue cutlery food chef kitchen |
