Supertramp Dreamer Live (drums by Jouxplan) Call me a ponce if you must, but I love this track on two levels. First, it is just a fantastic live performance of a superb song, in my humble opinion; and second, the drum part is absolutely perfect for the song. Almost every rock song you hear has a drum part that plays a beat on 2 and 4, or if you are listening to something a bit more sophisticated, the beat becomes grouped in 7 or 9 or whatever. But it is a constant beat. 'Dreamer' however has a totally different approach. Here the drummer, Bob C. Benberg (also known as Bob Siebenberg) plays what I would call a very 'melodic' part. I love the tom fills he does, and I love the cymbal work. It's brilliant. His accents when he does play a bit more 'conventionally' are often on the 1 and the 3, and this, frankly, throws the hell out of me. I love the whole outro where he is rolling with his feet, but again, for me, things are displaced from the norm since to start with in the outro the snare roll thing starts in a weird place compared to the rolling bass drum / hi-hat, and it took me a while to 'get' what I presumed to be an easy bit, because it felt so odd. It's a masterpiece of drumming. I used to play this pretty much note for note, but I did not have much chance to rehearse this this weekend. Therefore Supertramp buffs are likley to spot the errors and omissions. Anyway, you get the gist of it I hope :-) This is one of only three songs I have ever felt the need to transcribe. It was the only way I could learn the 'melody' which I think of as trying to play a xylophone. You are almost having to play actual musical notes, as opposed to beating out a rhythm. What a fantastic drummer Bob is! (if you want to know, the others are The Police 'One World', and Genesis 'Riding the Scree'. I had to transcribe bits of The Police Walking On The Moon too, 'cos I had no idea if what he was doing was actually playable.....!) I used Dreamer once when I was teaching a primary school class (5 -- 9 year olds) about different aspects of drumming. This turned out to be their favourite piece! For any Supertramp fans I have offended, apologies. I am not a true 'fan', though I happen to think that the live album 'Paris' that this cover is taken from, is one of the greatest live albums there is. The production is just incredible. Der Name der Band ist dem Titel des Buches The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp (dt. Supertramp. Autobiographie eines Vagabunden) von W.H. Davies entliehen. Der typische "Supertramp-Sound" definiert sich hauptsächlich durch das synkopische Spiel auf einem Wurlitzer A-200 (elektrisches Klavier). Eine individuelle Note entstand auch durch den Einsatz in damaliger Rock- und Popmusik bis dato unüblicher Instrumente wie z. B. Klarinette oder Tuba ("Logical Song"). Mit ihrem erfolgreichen Konzept aus hintergründigen Texten und Keyboard-orientiertem Softrock konnte Supertramp bis heute über 60 Millionen Alben weltweit verkaufen. Finanziell unterstützt durch den holländischen Industriellen Stanley August Miesegaes (genannt Sam), gründete sich die Band um die beiden Komponisten und Sänger Rick Davies und Roger Hodgson im Jahre 1969. Weitere Musiker der Urbesetzung waren der Gitarrist Richard Palmer-James (der spätere King-Crimson-Texter) und der Schlagzeuger Bob Millar. Die Band absolvierte ihren ersten öffentlichen Auftritt noch unter dem Namen „Daddy" im Münchener PN-Club in der Leopoldstraße. Dort dreht der Filmemacher Haro Senft einen Kurzfilm über die Band, der unter dem Titel „Supertramp Portrait 1970", veröffentlicht wird und u. a. am Filmfestival in San Remo 1970 teilnimmt. Senft war es auch, der Supertramp im Sommer 1970 beauftragte, den Soundtrack für seinen Film „Fegefeuer" aufzunehmen, der im März 1971 zur Erstaufführung kam. Noch deutlich im Stil des Progressive Rock und mit musikalischen Anleihen bei Bands wie Traffic oder King Crimson zeigte das Album schon einiges musikalisches Potential, verkaufte sich jedoch schlecht. Nach personellen Umbesetzungen -- für Palmer und Millar kamen Frank Farell (späterer Co-Writer für Leo Sayer) am Bass, der Perkussionist Kevin Currie (später: Wild Turkey) sowie der Saxophonist David Winthrop (später Chicken Shack) -- erschien 1971 das mehr an Rock'n'Roll und Blues orientierte Nachfolgealbum Indelibly Stamped, welches ebenso wie sein Vorgänger keine breite Käuferschaft fand. Zumindest durch das Cover, welches einen tätowierten nackten Oberkörper einer Frau zeigt, erlangte die Scheibe einige Aufmerksamkeit. Nach einer erfolglosen Skandinavien-Tour und dem Ausstieg ihres Sponsors Sam, der offenbar das Interesse als Rock-Mäzen verloren hatte, löste sich die Band auf. 1973 gründeten Davies und Hodgson Supertramp neu. Die neuen Band-Mitglieder waren John Helliwell (Saxophon, Klarinette), Dougie Thomson (Bass) und Bob Siebenberg -- bis 1980 unter dem Künstlernamen Bob C. Benberg -- (Schlagzeug und Perkussion). Die erste, im neuen Lineup produzierte Single Land Ho / Summer Romance fand zwar kaum Käufer, war jedoch für die Band der Start in eine erfolgreiche Karriere, da der renommierte Produzent Ken Scott (u.a. David Bowie und Elton John) die Produktion übernahm. Unter Scotts Regie entstand dann 1974 auch das Album Crime of the Century, das bis auf Platz 1 in der britischen Hitparade stieg, mit der Single Dreamer einen veritablen Top-Ten-Erfolg verbuchen konnte und auch den Titel School enthielt. Für die meisten Musikkritiker gilt Crime Of The Century heute als Supertramps bedeutendstes Album. Der Band gelang hier die Fusion von eingängiger und anspruchsvoller Musik, changierend zwischen Bluesrock, Pop und Progressive-Rock. Supertramps unverwechselbarer Sound, bestehend aus Hodgsons Falsettgesang, Rick Davies stakkatoartigem Klavierspiel und der Arbeit des erstklassigen Saxophonisten John Anthony Helliwell, waren hier erstmals zu hören. Die folgenden Alben 'Crisis? What Crisis? (1975), Even In The Quietest Moments (1977) (der Durchbruch in den USA) und Breakfast In America (1979) setzten den Erfolg fort -- mit dem letzteren erreichten Supertramp ihren kommerziell größten Erfolg. Das Album verkaufte sich mehr als 18 Millionen mal und enthielt mit den Songs Breakfast In America, The Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger und Take The Long Way Home gleich vier internationale Top-Hits. Nach einer ausgedehnten Welttournee (dokumentiert auf dem 1980er Doppelalbum Paris, mit sieben Titeln aus dem Crime of the century-Album), dem Studioalbum „...Famous Last Words..." (1982) und einer gigantischen Abschiedstournee verließ Roger Hodgson die Band zugunsten einer Solo-Karriere, da er und Davies sich über die Richtung der Band nicht mehr einig wurden.
