The Solifugids/solpugids (sun spiders, camel spiders, child of Earth Spiders, wind scorpions; order Solpugida) are spiderlike and hairy, with two closely placed median eyes. Their most striking characteristic is the enormous size of their chelicerae. These project in front of the head, and each of the pair is composed of two pieces forming a pincer that works in a vertical plane. The pedipalps are leglike, but have a specialized adhesive terminal segment. The pedipalps and the first pair of legs (that have a tactile function) are usually carried above the cephalothorax while the solpugid is standing or running. Feeding a Sun Spider Feeding a sun spider (camel spider, etc, has many names) the day I bought it. Though I have to blame the store I purchased it from for lack of care, the sun spider died that very night. I did get a refund though. If you listen closely at 0:04, you can hear the Sun Spider's jaw crushing into the cricket's exoskeleton. Very neat!
