Estrearia em 3 de janeiro de 1977, mas não chegou a ser exibida, por veto da censura. Stela e Rafael formam um casal estabelecido, que se encontrou e se amou com toda paixão. Mas, depois de mais de dez anos de união, há o desgaste normal, com problemas familiares que se foram acumulando. Obrigados a enfrentar realisticamente os problemas do dia-a-dia, o casamento começa a se desintegrar. É a fidelidade ao amor, e com o objetivo de reconquistar o relacionamento, que leva Stela e Rafael a procurar o consultório do Dr. Laio, um psicanalista que desenvolve uma terapia com outros casais com o mesmo problema: casamento em crise. Entre vários casais, o Dr. Laio trata de Lídia e Roque e de Rejane e Odilon. Lídia é uma mulher de mais idade que não acompanhou o desenvolvimento normal do marido, o Dr Roque. Quando ela desperta para esta realidade, está aquém de Roque e com dificuldade de recuperar o tempo que perdeu. Isto conduz a uma separação ou não? Rejane, fixada no marido, Odilon, não consegue romper essa dependência, nem nas diversas vezes em que é abandonada. Diante de uma separação definitiva, do desquite inevitável, entra em violenta crise emocional, sem condições de racionalizar seus problemas. Dez dias antes de estrear, a direção da TV Globo de Brasília recebeu um comunicado oficial do Serviço de Censura e Diversões Públicas que declarava a novela definitivamente proibida. Trinta capítulos já haviam sido gravados e outros tantos escritos e sendo produzidos - um prejuízo de Cr$ 5 milhões na época. Quando a equipe das novelas das 22 horas começou a se preparar para a produção daquela que se seguiria a Saramandaia, quatro sinopses foram enviadas ao Serviço de Censura, em Brasília. Eram O Casamento, de Wálter George Durst; uma adaptação de Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos; uma adaptação das crônicas de A Vida Como Ela É de Nelson Rodrigues; e uma adaptação de A Vida Escrachada de Baby Stompanato, de Consuelo Martines. Dessas quatro sinopses, apenas O Casamento foi liberado, mesmo assim com restrições quanto ao comportamento dos personagens esquizofrênicos que participavam de um grupo de análise. Com a sinopse liberada e o título alterado para Despedida de Casado, o texto de Durst começou a ser gravado normalmente. O texto dos 30 primeiros capítulos já havia sido submetido à censura e estava aprovado, quando se iniciaram as gravações. Mas quando os capítulos gravados, editados e sonorizados, foram para as mãos da censura, a opinião dos censores mudou. Wálter George Durst, o autor, declarou: "Estava trabalhando nesse enredo há quase três anos (...). A idéia era começar justamente onde todas as novelas acabam. Ou seja: a vida dos personagens centrais a partir do casamento". A novela estrearia no dia 3 de janeiro de 1977, às 22 horas. Em seu lugar, a Globo reapresentou O Bem Amado em capítulos compactos. Praticamente todo o elenco de Despedida de Casado foi aproveitado na nova produção do horário, Nina, também escrita por Wálter George Durst, que estreou em junho de 1977. A abertura com seu tema musical (Bandido Corazon, de Ney Matogrosso) foi aproveitada na abertura de Coquetel de Amor, a novela dentro de Espelho Mágico.
