Beer Tasting 15: Brooklyn Double Chocolate Stout First of all, true to my heart, beer is my first love as I was brought up on beer and my tasting knowledge of beer was learnt by immersion from pints after pints especially from many British pubs I visited while I was studying there... Secondly, North Americans serve ales too cold (Period). I talked to BIG and micro breweries, pub owners and many brewers about it. Although they acknowledge but seldom correct to serve at the optimum temperature I suggest. It's like serving a big robust red wine chilled cold! Why? My answer is North Americans are used to drinking insipid light lager style beer with massive adjunts cold. Glug down a double 6 packs on a typical Friday night of the so called 'King of Beers' which is really chilled diluted pi$$ (Joke! Joke!)...even micro-brewers serve their 'hearts and souls' COLD to please these drinkers in case they get complains. The Brooklyn Double Chocolate stout was served with 15-20 minutes of chilling in my fridge with a CLEAN Riedel wine tasting glass to maximise the aroma and feel of the stout. Upon nosing, lots of chocolate came out along with burnt (more chocolatey) malt characters. The beer has a massive level of alcohol (over 10%) but the ultra full body with creamy bubbles and layers of deep assertive tastes manage to hide the alcohol well. Chocolate, burnt but sweet fruity malt, root beer characters and slight smokiness and tartness follow through. A complex personality! The finish was long and penetrating that lasts a long time. Sit in front of the fire to sip while it's blowing a gale outside or drink the stuff heartily with some wood smoked beef ribs! A WOW beer in my book!
