ONE BAD STUD by "The Blasters" STREETS OF FIRE Movie The Blasters are a rock music group formed in 1979 in Downey, California by brothers Phil Alvin (vocals and guitar) and Dave Alvin (guitar), with bass guitarist John Bazz and drummer Bill Bateman. Their so-called "American Roots Music" was a blend of blues music, rockabilly, early rock and roll and rhythm and blues. I saw this movie at the theatre when it was released. It was and still is a favorite of mine. Great memories. I'm a big JIM STEINMAN fan. Dan Hartman's "I Can Dream About You" is the most successful song from this movie and became a Billboard top 10 hit in 1984. Two Wagnerian rock songs written by Jim Steinman were part of the soundtrack: "Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young" and "Nowhere Fast", both performed by Fire Inc. with Holly Sherwood as lead vocal. The title of the former was used as the tagline on some promotional materials for the film. 'The Attackers' were the real-life (Face to Face) bandmates of Laurie Sargent, who provided the lead vocals on Ellen Aim's songs "Never Be You" and "Sorcerer" and supporting vocals on "Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young." Streets of Fire is a 1984 film directed by Walter Hill, and co-written by Hill and Larry Gross. It was described in previews, trailers, and posters as "A Rock & Roll Fable." It is an unusual mix of musical, action, drama and comedy with elements both retro-1950s and 1980s. The film stars Michael Paré as a soldier of fortune who returns home to rescue his ex-girlfriend (Diane Lane) who has been kidnapped by Raven (Willem Dafoe) and his motorcycle gang, the Bombers. Some of the film was shot on the backlot of Universal Studios in California on two large, elaborate sets covered in a tarp 1,240 feet long by 220 feet wide so that night scenes could be filmed during the day. The film was promoted as a summer blockbuster but was not well-received critically or commercially, grossing only $8 million in North America, well below its $14.5 million budget. Jay Boy Adams ~ Tennessee Stud Smokin' Jay Boy Adams and guitar-slinging prodigy/protege Will Owen-Gage rip it up on "Tennessee Stud" (Jimmy Driftwood) with Flaco Jimenez, bassist Ronnie Leatherman (nee Thirteenth Floor Elevators) at the Bluebonnet Blues Festival on a hot spring afternoon in Texas. First, what can you say about the legendary Flaco Jimenez -- brilliant accordionist,perhaps the only guy playing accomplished accordion with a jazz sensibility (okay, actually there's the fantatsic Joel Guzman and the phenomenal Esteban Jordan too). And there's Ronnie Leatherman, one of two of our neighbors here with a history in the seminal punk/psychedelic band the Thirteenth Floor Elevators. I've always loved how Ronnie plays as though nothing can faze him. What a fantastic combination on stage. And let's talk about the grand old man up there, J.B. Adams. I first saw Adams at a midsummer concert in 1973 where he was on the bill with Willie Nelson, Wishbone Ash, It's a Beautiful Day, Blue Oyster Cult and headliners ZZ Top. Willie was the opener, unknown at the time to us wee rockers, but just starting the movement later to be known as Redneck Rock (a la Jan Reid) or Progressive Country. Soon all of us were crossing all the boundaries. Adams was the young hotshot guitarist of the day, trading licks with Billy Gibbons, and getting tons of looks, but he vanished into some obscurity around 1980. He re-emerged in the late 90s, and to my thinking was especially re-energized by the finding of, and mentoring of young Will, in much the same way that Gibbons had taken him under his wing. And Will Owen-Gage of whom you'll be hearing lots more. I believe Owen-Gage was 17 at the time of this gig. Gage got tons of experience playing with Adams' Roadhouse Scholars just south of town here, and the benefit is obvious. Adams told me his one wish was that Will would find the melody in his runs instead of becoming just another lightning-fingered clone. In this and the other clips i'll be posting I think that's just what you'll hear -- a young man on the verge of being found by the music world largely because there is so much music in his lines.
