Crystallization of Supersaturated Sodium Acetate There is no audio for this video. It is a series of still pictures. A solution of sodium acetate in water is in a flask. A few small crystals of sodium acetate are placed on the top of the laboratory bench. The solution from the flask is poured over the crystals. As the solution contacts the crystals, its color changes from clear to white very rapidly and it crystallizes into a solid mound of material that builds up into a fairly tall vertical structure. Do-it-yourself diffusion cloud chamber This is some footage of a diffusion cloud chamber, made for a college project. The detector is made out of MDF plates glued together as air-tight as possible. The top and bottom are made of aluminum plates. Cloth of some sort is soaked with isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol) and attached to the top plate. The detector is then put upside-down for about twenty minutes in order for the isopropyl alcohol to vaporize and fill the entire box. The box is then shut and placed upside-up on a tub made out of polystyrene. The tub is filled with liquid nitrogen. Over the nitrogen we placed another aluminum plate with four brass screws in it in order to improve the cooling of the gas in the detector. When the gas in the detector cools down, a layer of gas in the bottom of the detector becomes supersaturated. When a particle passes through the supersaturated gas, it ionizes molecules of isopropyl. The ions then move towards other ions or away from them. Because of the supersaturated state of the gas, the little increase in energy due to their movement is enough to condensate the gas, leaving a white trail in the particles trajectory. Research on over 90 thousand French women has shown that those with endometriosis were 60% more likely to develop skin melanoma - a pigmented form of skin cancer. From Washington - Supersaturated oxygen given while someone is having a heart attack can limit damage to the heart muscle. A randomized clinical trial on over 300 patients showed a 6% reduction in the size of a heart attack when patients were given supersaturated oxygen. In addition, oxygen therapy doubled the chance that ventricular function remained normal. From Chicago - Nearly one in 3 patients with breathing problems like asthma or COPD, don't use their inhalers properly. A research study of over 200 patients, which evaluated the use of inhalers, showed that one-third of patients failed to get medication to their lungs; this number rose to over 50% in those who were not given proper instruction on how to use inhalers. And finally from New York - Children with colds should wait a few weeks before having a general anesthetic. A study has demonstrated that children who received general anesthesia within 2 weeks of having a cold were 2 times more likely to experience spasm of the larynx, 3 times more likely to have cough and twice as likely to have oxygen desaturation. KDP Crystal Growth This is a synthetic seed crystal. It is placed in a six-foot-high tank filled with nearly a metric ton of supersaturated potassium dihydrogen phosphate, or KDP. As it rotates on a turntable in the tank, the crystal begins to grow. In just two months, the crystal grows to be as large as 800 pounds; with conventional methods of growing crystals, this process would take nearly two years. When complete, the crystal is carefully cleaned. It's removed from the tank. Then it's measured; and finally, it's cut into 40-by-40-centimeter plates to be used in the National Ignition Facility to focus, transmit and direct laser beams on their way to the target chamber.
