Palestine Vs. Israel: Against the Wall - Part 1 of 6 SEE PART 2 - 6 http://www.vbs.tv/player.php?bctid=1334428872&bccl=dW5kZWZpbmVkX191bmRlZmluZWQ VBS NEWS HOST SUROOSH ALVI DISCUSSES THE EFFECT OF THE WEST BANK WALL ON PALESTINIAN TRAVEL VBS: How does the wall interfere with life inside its perimeter? Suroosh Alvi: Basically what's happening is the Israeli government is controlling the movement of the Palestinians. They're not allowed into Israel and their movement is even restricted within the West Bank. You never know what roads you're going to have to take to get from point A to point B because they're always moving things around, putting up blockades so you have to go onto these rural routes strewn with rubble. And this is all done without any sort of advanced warning? Yes. We were trying to drive from Emad's house to Bethlehem and it took us hours to get there. You'd be going along then all of a sudden there'd be a roadblock and you'd have to turn left, then you'd hit another one and have to turn right and go around right by where you originally were. It's extremely confusing—the whole time we were driving, we kept having to pull over and get new directions from other Palestinians. Having blockades at the border at least makes sense—why do they need to close off roads within Palestinian territory? Because there are so many Israeli settlements everywhere and they have to have highways running straight from the settlements to Israel proper for the settlers to get back and forth. And so now Palestinians are forbidden from going on these beautiful, nice highways that are going straight through the West Bank—it's totally fucked. A FINAL Q&A WITH HOST SUROOSH ALVI ON BIL'IN'S FRIDAY NIGHT DEMI-RIOT AND ITS IMPLICATIONS ON THE WHOLE MIDDLE EASTERN SHEBANG So, these weekly showdowns between the villagers and soldiers all stem from the way the wall deviates from the border and encroaches on Palestinian territory. Yes. In the case of Bil'in, they lose 55 percent of their land. And it's all their good land, all their farmable land. Overnight all the town's farmers lose their livelihoods. At the same time the Israeli settlement goes up and they have access to that land. Do you think that's the underlying motivation for the settlements and the route the wall takes? No. If you look at the West Bank, it's a big pile of rubble. You see a big settlement in the middle of nowhere and you go, "Why would they put that settlement there? The land is shit." We drove all around Israel proper and it's full of beautiful green pastures. There's plenty of space for these settlers, but they're choosing to live in the West Bank and if there's a good plot of land they can farm, then the government figures out a way to give it to them. In Bil'in's case, their good land was lost. Then they fought to gain access to some of it and the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that the government had to move the wall back there, but they never did and now they've announced that they're going to build a new settlement there as well. So who the fuck knows. Considering that from a security standpoint the wall's been 100 percent effective, do you think there's any chance of Israel stopping construction on the thing? The way it's going, just being there I got this impending feeling of doom about the whole thing. This whole place is gearing up toward having a really big war. I don't see the wall coming down anytime soon. International pressure hasn't done anything about it—it just keeps getting built. They had the Annapolis conference last week and they're saying, oh, we're going to work toward a two-state solution. And maybe that will eventually happen, but I think the wall will probably stay. The short answer is I really have no fucking clue. All I know is that wall's an incredibly poor leading indicator of things to come. Heavy Metal in Baghdad http://www.heavymetalinbaghdad.com ON DVD 6/10/08! Heavy Metal in Baghdad is a documentary feature film that follows the Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda (Latin for a deadly black scorpion native to Iraq) from the fall of Saddam Hussein to their escape from Iraq. The band members - Firas (bass), Tony (lead guitar), Marwan (drums) and Faisal (lead vocals and rhythm guitar) - were bred on American heavy metal albums, learning to speak English by listening to Slayer, Metallica and Slipknot. Playing heavy metal in a Muslim country has always been a difficult (if not impossible preposition, but, after Saddam's regime was toppled, there was a brief moment for the band in which real freedom seemed possible. That hope was quickly dashed as their country fell into a bloody insurgency. Directors Eddy Moretti and Suroosh Alvi traveled to Baghdad to find Acrassicauda, Iraq's most famous heavy metal band. From 2003-2006, Iraq disintegrated around Acrassicauda while they struggled to stay together and stay alive always refusing to let their heavy metal dreams die. Their story echoes the unspoken hopes of an entire generation of young Iraqis. Tags: Heavy Metal in Baghdad Iraq news film movie documentary trailer experimental |

Heavy Metal in Baghdad A entertaining and eye-opening pop-political documentary in which Vice journalists Eddy Moretti and Suroosh Alvi travel to Iraq in the hopes of locating the only heavy metal band in the country, Acrassicauda (named, of course, after a scorpion). Having played a great show following the fall of Saddam Hussein, the band is faced with the reality of staying together as their country falls into bloody insurgency. Acrassicauda refuse to let their heavy metal dreams die, and their story echoes the hopes of a generation of young Iraqis. Brawl Casuals With WTF 3-1 PRK member (me) at WTF (Who Those Filipinos) casuals. Suroosh/SushiemanX (Samus) vs MR. SC (Kirby) I suck at Brawl...because of Classic Controller and not having component cables hooked up to an HDTV. I'm the one with the nasally voice with the cold. Feel free to criticize. In the beginning, I said we had to do it again because some people thought it was funny to mess around during the match, grab the camera, and make it record some nasty 1000% spanking video, or soemthing. And DJcream talks about me being "suffisticated" because right before the recording started I said something like "you'll get your comeupance." And I mocked them for liking joystick or something. Kirby just looks funny. Mocking everyone! Tags: super smash bros brawl casuals wtf prk sushiemanx dapon zero suit samus kirby video game |

Brawl Casuals With WTF 3-1 More casuals. Suroosh/Sushiemanx (Samus) vs TheTruth/TheRequest/Anal Lube (Falco) I SUCK! This was my last match of the night. My frustration with the Classic Controller has no bounds. And Jill asks if the "floating ball" is good because earlier in the night she was playing as Game & Watch and tried to get the Smash Ball. I hadn't seen G&W's FS so I didn't want it spoiled for me, so I kept telling her the ball was bad. Also, reference to the San Francisco Brawl tourney when VaJJ was going up against Kokichi (cheap paper fan item). WTFcasuals 3-1: Post-Boston meeting "Who Those Filipinos" weekly creamy casuals Camera: DJcream Highlights: - VaJJ shows no fears against KoreanDJ, the winner of the Boston Nintendo-sponsored Brawl tournament - DJcream openly wants to money match KDJ in Melty Blood: Act Cadenza* - reQuest explains to a friend who KDJ is - Sushi gets criticized after losing to VaJJ. Sure blame our break at KFC. *I'm pretty sure I'm not going to meet KDJ to carry out the $match since he lives on the other side of the country; however, I would be happy to at least play the guy. If KDJ is reading this, please leave a comment and we can get some matches going...hopefully. EDIT2: I hate the audio desync in this one. I think it was caused by Jack Black being magnetized in the movie trailer of Be Kind Rewind. Oh well... Tags: WTF Smash Brawl casuals Suroosh Dapon SushieMan DJcream VaJJ reQuest |
