Spurs - T-Wolves 129-125 2OT I Parker Career-High 55pts MINNEAPOLIS, November 5, 200 (AP) -- Being 0-3 really bothered Tony Parker. The San Antonio Spurs needed every last layup and feathery jumper from the fast-moving Frenchman, whose unstoppable performance was just enough to fuel their first win. Parker scored a career-high 55 points, including a 20-footer at the buzzer to force a second overtime, in San Antonio's 129-125 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night. The Spurs avoided an 0-4 start for the first time since 1973, when they still played in the ABA. "I just wanted to win so bad. I was going to try to do everything I can," said Parker, whose previous best was a 38-point effort in January 2006 at Miami. "It's just one of those games. Everything you do, it works. ... Obviously, everybody knows if I make my jump shots, I can do whatever I want. Tonight was just one of those games that everything was working." After Al Jefferson backed down Tim Duncan and sank a turnaround hook to put Minnesota up 116-114 with 2 1/2 seconds left in the first overtime, Parker took the inbounds pass, dribbled right, pump-faked once and let the ball fly. Swish. He let a sly smile creep across his normally stone face as the Wolves trudged back to the bench. Jefferson, who had 30 points and 14 rebounds, paused to sit on the scorer's table before play resumed and just shook his head as if to say, "What more can we do?" Mike Miller had 12 of his 25 points in the first quarter for Minnesota, which held a nine-point lead twice but lost its edge late in the third while the Spurs closed with a 26-14 run. The Wolves, who lost their third straight after winning their opener, threw everything they had against Parker, Duncan and the rest of the bunch. "We're getting chances. It took Tony making every shot for them," Miller said. "We've got to figure out what we've got to do to win games. We'll just keep plugging away." San Antonio picked up its sixth straight win and 11th in the last 12 meetings against Minnesota. "I told our guys at the end of the game we could easily be 3-1, but the reality is we're 1-3 and we've got to keep fighting," Wolves coach Randy Wittman said. "I'm proud of their effort." Parker scored six of his team's first eight points in the second overtime to stretch the lead to four, though Randy Foye made a 3-pointer from the corner to cut the lead to one. The Spurs were in perfect position to rebound a pair of missed jumpers, before Parker finally went to the line with 19 seconds left and made it 128-125. "I saw it in his eyes, man. I could tell," said teammate Roger Mason, who had 26 points. "He was in that zone, like they say. He kept his foot on the pedal and just kept going and going and going. When a guy's like that, who knows?" That gave Parker the highest scoring output by any individual opponent in the Wolves' 20-year history. Shaquille O'Neal had 53 points for Orlando in a game against Minnesota in 1994. Parker was 22-of-36 from the field and added 10 assists and seven rebounds. According to sports researcher STATS, Inc., the last NBA player to have at least 55 points and 10 assists in a game was Michael Jordan. He had 57 points and 10 assists for Chicago against Washington on Dec. 23, 1992. "Just an unbelievable effort, especially with the minutes he's played to continue to push like that," Duncan said. Though their first two defeats were narrow, to Phoenix and Portland, the Spurs were sputtering with Manu Ginobili on the mend. Averaging nearly 31 points over San Antonio's four victories over the Wolves last season, he sank an astounding seven of nine 3-pointers in each matchup at Minnesota. Well, Parker more than did his part to fill the void, as he's actually done all four times the Spurs have taken the court in Ginobili's absence to an ankle injury. He's been working on his outside shot, an effort that is clearly paying off. "I have to shoot it with confidence," he said. After surviving their opener by two points over Sacramento, the Wolves went cold in losses to Dallas and Oklahoma City. Randy Foye missed all 10 of his shots against the Thunder after going 3-for-14 against the Mavericks, and Miller -- whose arrival was designed to significantly upgrade their outside shooting -- was 1-for-7 from behind the arc in those games. Miller got it going in this one, though, hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter and sinking his share down the stretch. That was one solace the Wolves could take from this, despite yet another devastating last-second defeat. Miller went 5-for-7 from 3-point range. "We flowed into things a lot better today. It wasn't such a grind," Wittman said. Made by NBA TV. Tags: NBA Minnesota Timberwolves San Antonio Spurs game play Jefferson Telfair Parker career-high Duncan moves dunk 3pt 2OT |

T-Wolves - Thunder 85-88 I Jefferson 24pts vs Durant 18pts OKLAHOMA CITY, November 2, 2008 (AP) -- It didn't take long for Russell Westbrook to show the defensive prowess that convinced the Oklahoma City Thunder to make him their first-round draft pick. Westbrook sparked a comeback with back-to-back steals on the defensive end and then scored the go-ahead basket for the last of his 14 points as the Thunder beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 88-85 Sunday night for their first victory in their new home. Westbrook, who earlier sparked a 13-0 run that pulled the Thunder out of a third-quarter deficit, hit the decisive basket with a driving layup that made it 86-85 with 2:19 to play and Oklahoma City stopped Minnesota on its next six possessions to hang on for the win. "We're going to have to be scrappy to win games," said Westbrook, the No. 4 overall pick in this year's draft and the first building block in the franchise's defensive overhaul. Westbrook was hardly the flashy pick so early in the draft, overshadowed by Memphis' Derrick Rose and Kansas State's Michael Beasley -- the first two players taken. Even former teammate Kevin Love, who plays for Minnesota, got more headlines than Westbrook in their time at UCLA. But Westbrook might be just what the Thunder need to improve on a defense that gave up the fourth-most points in the NBA last season as the Seattle SuperSonics. After giving up 106.3 points last season, none of Oklahoma City's first three opponents have even hit triple digits. The improvement was clear down the stretch, as Minnesota scored only two points in the final 5 minutes -- on Al Jefferson's putback of Randy Foye's missed 3-pointer that gave the Timberwolves an 85-84 lead with 2:43 left. Westbrook answered with his layup at the other end, and Ryan Gomes, Jefferson and Foye all missed chances to give the Timberwolves the lead before Nick Collison's left-handed hook shot with 16.4 seconds left made it a three-point game. After a pair of missed free throws by Jeff Green gave Minnesota one last chance, Gomes missed a potential tying 3-pointer from the left side to close the game. Officials huddled by a courtside monitor to see if there was a foul before the final buzzer, and cheerleaders ran onto the court to start the celebration anyway. It turned out the Thunder's first win with their new identity was safe after all. "Any win feels good, honestly," Oklahoma City coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "It's very good to get a win in this building. It's very good to get a win the way we got it." Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 18 points despite a 7-for-21 shooting night. Green added 13 points, Chris Wilcox scored 12 off the bench and Collison had 10 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double. Minnesota's Al Jefferson had 24 points and 13 rebounds for his third straight double-double to start the season, but the Thunder clamped down late on him. Craig Smith added 13 points, Gomes scored 12 and Mike Miller had 10. "It's a game we're supposed to have won," Jefferson said. "We gave up 25 points second-chance. That's why it hurts so bad. ... No disrespect to the Thunder, but it was just a game we had in the bag and we should have won." The Thunder got off to slow starts in each of the first three quarters, going 3-for-13 from the field to open the game and then giving up a 9-0 run to start the second quarter and a 7-0 spurt right after halftime. Each time, Oklahoma City came back -- and Westbrook finally got his team over the top. He had steals on back-to-back possessions late in the third quarter, turning the first into a three-point play that sparked a 13-0 run for the Thunder. He also finished off the surge with a driving finger roll for a 76-73 Oklahoma City lead early in the fourth quarter. With Westbrook playing so well, Carlesimo left him in down the stretch alongside fellow point guard Earl Watson instead of going with his initial plan to go with the veteran Wilcox and a bigger lineup. "I just thought we needed Earl to settle us down I think we did not want to take Russell out of the game," Carlesimo said. "I was kind of boxed in." It turned out to be exactly what the Thunder needed. Game notes Collison had seven of Oklahoma City's 19 offensive rebounds. The Thunder had 25 second-chance points to 11 for Minnesota. ... The Timberwolves were 16-for-16 from the free-throw line. After winning their opener despite an 11-for-22 performance against Sacramento, the Wolves have lost their last two games while making 38 of 40 at the foul line. ... Foye was 0-for-10 and had his only two points on free throws. Made by NBA TV. T-Wolves-Warriors 110-113 OT I Jefferson 25pts vs Jackson 30pts OAKLAND, Calif., November 11, 2008(AP) -- Stephen Jackson learned a little something about his young teammates when they rallied back to force overtime and then went on to win. Jackson delivered by tying the game late in regulation and scoring six of his 30 points in overtime, leading the Golden State Warriors back from a poor fourth quarter to beat the hapless Minnesota Timberwolves 113-110 on Tuesday night. "At the end of the day it's just good to get a win,'' Jackson said. "I definitely give it up for those young guys coming off the bench, trying to figure out their roles. We got it into overtime and we found a way to win. That says a lot about this team with us having so many young guys.'' Jackson hit a 3-pointer with 2:16 left in the extra session and the Warriors sent the Timberwolves to their sixth straight loss. Jackson's transition layin with 22.2 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 106 and Rashad McCants missed a 3-pointer from the top of the arc at the buzzer to send the game into extra time. Al Jefferson had 25 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots for Minnesota, which seemed in control when it led by 10 with 7:06 left. The Timberwolves missed their first five shots in overtime before Randy Foye's basket with 1:07 to play. Minnesota hasn't won since starting the season with a 98-96 victory against Sacramento at home on Oct. 29. As if the game wasn't long enough, the officials met to review whether Golden State's C.J. Watson was fouled before the final buzzer sounded and they ultimately added two-tenths of a second to the clock and put Watson at the free throw line. That's after Golden State had dropped confetti that had to quickly be swept off the court for play to resume. "We were ready to win the game, that's what I liked,'' Timberwolves coach Randy Wittman said. "They fought. We ran into a period there where we didn't defend and they made shots. There's a lot of good things in this but the most important one's a bad thing (losing). I don't know what else to say. We have to learn how to close games out.'' McCants added 18 points off the bench for the Timberwolves and Ryan Gomes, another reserve, had 18 points and five rebounds. Jefferson, who shot 11-for-19, hit a turnaround hook shot with 8:09 to play that put Minnesota ahead 99-91 and appeared to give his team the momentum it needed down the stretch down the stretch. Golden State's Andris Biedrins finished with 13 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out in overtime, recording his 15th straight double-double dating back to April - the longest current streak in the NBA. Kelenna Azubuike added 22 points and eight rebounds. His two free throws with 1:21 left in regulation got Golden State within 106-104. "A lot of guys played well, Jack especially,'' Warriors coach Don Nelson said. "We really needed a big game from him to win. I don't know how long I can play him 48 minutes but we'll keep going till he cries.'' Minnesota was winless on its three-game West Coast swing after already dropping games at Sacramento and Portland. The Timberwolves previously lost six in a row from April 1-9 last season, when they also had an eight-game skid and another six-gamer in 2007-08. "The mood is tough, but no one feels sorry for us,'' Minnesota's Mike Miller said. The Warriors certainly would like to establish some rhythm at home in Oracle Arena to give this young team some confidence in the season's first month, and the 17,422 fans were thrilled to see them rally back this time. "I thought we could postpone the rebuilding by a year,'' Nelson said, acknowledging he expects to see a fair share of mistakes early on. "We understand we're not going to be a quick fix. It's going to be a longer-term deal. I've gone through this process before. It's not necessarily a good feeling, but it's a process you have to work through.'' The Timberwolves, who hit nine of their first 15 shots on the way to a quick 19-6 lead, shot 1-of-10 from 3-point range in the first half to fall behind 58-50 at the break despite getting 15 assists to the Warriors' seven. Notes: The Warriors hired Larry Harris as an assistant coach Tuesday. He previously spent 19 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks in a variety of capacities but has never been an assistant. Harris, the son of veteran NBA coach Del Harris, replaces Larry Riley. Riley took over as Golden State's assistant general manager last week when president Robert Rowell abruptly fired assistant GM Pete D'Alessandro, who had been top basketball executive Chris Mullin's right-hand man for five seasons. ... Golden State's Al Harrington, who wants to be traded, missed his third straight game with a strained lower back and Corey Maggette sat out his fourth consecutive game with a strained left hamstring. NBA Summer League 08: T-Wolves - Knicks 111-91 LAS VEGAS, July 20, 2008 -- The Minnesota Timberwolves never trailed as they defeated the New York Knicks, 111-91, in the first of five games in the final day of competition at the 2008 NBA Summer League Presented by EA SPORTS. Both the Timberwolves -- playing without Kevin Love, who suffered a sore left Achilles yesterday against the Bucks -- and the Knicks finished their Summer League stints with matching 2-3 records. Minnesota dominated throughout, shooting 62 percent from the floor during the first 20 minutes of play and stretching their lead to as many as 16 in the half, on the back of Pops Mensah-Bonsu's 13 first-half points. In the second half, the Timberwolves' defense kicked in, holding the Knicks to only 13 in the third quarter. The Knicks, who had been down as many as 28, rallied in the fourth and come within 12 points, 87-99, with 3:46 to play. But the deficit proved too great -- Minnesota closed the game out with a 20-point win, 111-91.
