Testament ya Bowule - Malage de Lugendo w/Soukous Stars VINTAGE SOUKOUS! Malage de Lugendo's most famous song, performed in Newark with Soukous Stars, February 4th, 2006. Malage has an amazing vocal range -- it's demonstrated at the tail end of the song when he is singing in a high register, and then reverts to his usual voice to say "thank you" to the crowd...what a voice... (sorry about the jump in the middle -- videotape cassette change caused me to miss about 10-seconds of Shiko's solo guitar...shucks...) Franco & le T.P. O.K. Jazz - Kadima (Lutumba Simaro) 1978 Hilarious, this shows the true artistry of Mr. Mpoyi, because he almost needs an Houdini act to be able to keep singing. Tags: Zaire Congo Rumba Franco TPOKJazz Simaro Concentratievermogen |

VINTAGE SOUKOUS-Soukous Stars in Newark, Dec. 05 I love this clip...it starts with the Newark street scene outside the club. The band starts playing at the perfect moment, and we follow the sound inside to listen. The singer is Jonal, from Congo. Viewer ANTONY from Swindon in the UK tells me that what the Soukous Stars are playing here is a medley of songs made famous by T.P. OK Jazz. The first part is 'Mario', originally a sublime duet between Franco and Madilu. The second part is 'Liyanzi Ekoti Ngai Na Motema', commonly known as 'Mouzi'. One of the late Ntesa Dalienst's most popular songs. gratitude to Antony for these details!! Belgium's Village Folk Bayaka Congolese band! It used to be the BELGIAN Congo (before it was Congo, Zaire, and now the Democratic Republic of Congo) - so it's no surprise to find a great Congolese band in the Antwerp area of Belgium. Franco - C'est Dur la Vie d'une Femme Célibataire 1987 Officially, this is still Franco & le T.P. O.K. Jazz, but it really had become a studio project by then, with for instance Dizzy Mandjeku coming into the studio and Franco telling him to play so many bars of this and then so many bars of that... And where is the horn section? They are coming from a tin can, so to speak, sampled sounds coming from a keyboard. Baniel & Nana singing, but as long Franco plays that guitar, I will lend my ear to it. And he does. Tags: Franco Rumba Zaire Africa TPOKJazz |

Franco & le T.P. O.K. Jazz - Liberté (Franco) 1975 Kindu kindly translated this for us. (Can you help us out with the different lines in this one that were not sung in the studio cut & the conversation with Lukunku at the end, my brother?) Sung by Lola Djangi Chécain (great animator, too!), Josky Kiambukuta Londa, Wuta Mayi and Grand Maitre (avant la lettre)Luambo Makiadi. With Decca (b), Simaro (r), Michelino (s), Ntoya (d) & le Sorcier de la gitare. I like the look in Franco's eyes on this one, especially now that I know what he's singing about. Lutumba Simaro & le T.P. O.K. Jazz - Kabongo 1982 Vocals: Josky Kiambukuta with Djo Mpoyi, Ndombe Opetum and Wuta Mayi. Guitars: Lutumba Simaro, Thierry Mantuika and Gerry Dialungana. Bass: possibly Flavien Makabi. To aseyo: Don't be too sure. Look at the first pic here: http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=cldSZ4N_QNg, 2nd from the left: Flavien Makabi. That tour, Decca had been punished (Franco's word: punis), he'd been naughty. Decca played on nearly all Franco compositions on record in his time with OKJ. But this is a Simaro composition. I'd put my money on FM. (The first pic is from the sleeve of the album, the other three were taken in Brussels nine years later.) Tags: Simaro Rumba Zaire Africa TPOKJazz |
