TACA 390 CRASH Toncontin Airport (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) Probe of Fatal TACA Crash Underway A TACA Airbus A320-233 (El-TAF) skidded off a rain-soaked runway at Tegucigalpa-Toncontin Airport (TGU) in Honduras on May 30, veered onto a road, smashing into cars and a building. TACA Flight 390, a regular flight from San Salvadors Comalapa International Airport (SAL), El Salvador to Miami International with an intermediate stop at Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, ended with the jetliner broken in three parts. A pilot, two passengers and two occupants of a car were killed. At least 80 others were injured among those aboard the A320, including 124 passengers, two pilots, four flight attendants and five crewmembers who were being repositioned. The jetliner landed amid high winds and low visibility. The approach to the aging Honduran airport is difficult even in clear weather. The A320 exited Runway 02/20 (6,112 x 148 feet). The morning of the accident, Tropical Storm Alma had buffeted Nicaraguas Pacific coast before its remnant headed inland over southern Honduras. The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched a team of investigators to assist the governments of Honduras and El Salvador in their investigation of the fatal runway overrun. The last time El Salvadors TACA International Airlines was involved in an accident was in 1993 when one of its Boeing 767s overran a runway while landing at Guatemala City, Guatemala, crashing into houses. There were no fatalities in the earlier runway excursion. The last fatal air accident in Honduras occurred in 1997 when a USAF C-130 crashed, taking three lives. It flies to about 50 different countries. The 5 airlines are Aviateca (Guatemala) Lacsa (Costa Rica) NICA (Nicaragua) Taca (El Salvador) Taca de Honduras (Honduras) But in its history; besides making destinations to Canada, Mexico, The US, Belize, Costa Rica, The Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Argentina, Buenos Aires, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela it has had 2 accidents in its history. On May 24, 1988, TACA Airlines Flight 110 was approaching the New Orleans airport when it encountered heavy precipitation, including hail up to 1.25 inches (32 mm) in diameter. The aircraft experienced a dual engine flameout at about 16,200ft due to water ingestion, and the flight crew were able to establish emergency electrical power at about of 10,500ft. The crew was unsuccessful in their attempts to restart the engines, and had to execute an emergency landing on a grass strip on a levee on the Intercoastal Waterway (after initially planning to ditch the aircraft on the waterway). The flight crew successfully made an unpowered landing and none of the 45 occupants were injured. The aircraft was repaired and flown off the levee. The one featured occured on the evening of April 5, 1993 as a Boeing 767 of Flight 510 was coming in for landing at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City. By chance a Mexican passenger was filming this journey's end. What nobody knew was the airplane landed after a rain shower has just passed over the airport. Control tower personnel had advised the crew of slippery runway conditions. Touchdown occurred approximately 3,500 feet down the 9,200-foot runway at a speed of 153 knots. With 500 feet remaining, the captain determined that the airplane would not stop before the end of the runway. He intentionally steered the airplane to the left. The airplane exited the runway at a speed of 76 knots, went through the perimeter fence, traveled down a hill, and struck several residences before it came to rest 810 feet from where it had left the runway. All of the 224 occupants safely evacuated the airplane, and only minor injuries were reported. No one on the ground was was injured, and there was no postimpact fire.
