The Online Video Revolution will be Our Legacy - Twyla Tharp The Online Video Revolution will be Our Legacy -- Watch Twyla Tharp Dance with Me!!!! I believe that the implications of the revolution in online video are far more significant than the temporal entertainment and information we consume. All this video is becoming an archive, a collective legacy of our society and times -- for better or for worse. Sure, a great deal of community-generated video will end up in some digital trash heap, but much will exist well into the future. This living archive will be both a historical legacy and a guidebook to future generations. I had the extraordinary opportunity to spend time earlier this month with one of the most celebrated performing artists our time, choreographer Twyla Tharp. In my interview, Twyla explains why video has become the "text" or the language of dance. She's been taping her dances since the sixties. She sees her video archives as means to hand down her dance to future generations. I see an analogy with Twyla's vision of video as a historical notation -- and the current video revolution which will become our legacy. Our history is being published for the future right now. Twyla Tharp on the Subject of Motivation and Creativity Beware of Hype and Stay Focused and Learn to Be Creative, Says Dance Great Twyla Tharp Tywla Tharp is the most celebrated choreographers of her generation. She happens to be a very compelling writer on the subject of motivation and creativity. Her book The Creative Habit is handbook in personal discipline and creative growth. Twyla is evangelist for her body of work. In addition to choreographing new ballets, she is motivational speaker at organizations including NASA and GE. She told me that creativity must be a personal undertaking -- and it can't be constructed for fame and fortune -- it needs to done as serious and honest work -- and if it succeeds, the money and accolades will come. "Dancy/Dancy" by Twyla Tharp In planning my sessions with Twyla we were going to tape a rehearsal of two principal dancers from the Seattle's Pacific Northwest Ballet -- Twyla is choreographing a new piece for the highly regarded dance company. Well, the night before our session, she called me on my mobile and said, "Andy, the taping session with the dancers won't work, so you'll dance with me." I was stunned. She told me to remember to breathe, follow her and "don't step between me and the camera." Well I gave it my best try -- although I did step in front of her and she scolded me. It's pretty funny. Stephen Tharp plays Vierne for Our Lady of Refuge Organ Fund Stephen Tharp the famed American Concert Organist has just recorded a benefit CD to help raise $200,000 for the complete restoration of the pipe organ at the Parish of Our Lady of Refuge in Brooklyn, NY. This Video was filmed March 10, 2007 at the console of the church's 25 rank Kilgen, Opus 5163. This instrument was built to the design of Charles M. Courboin. Construction was started on the organ in September of 1933 and completed on November 30, 1933 "except console-awaiting shipping instructions". It was shipped to the church in January of 1934 and the church was dedicated in June of 1934. On Monday March 12, 2007 the Organ Clearing House removed the organ from its chambers to protect its 1800 pipes and mechanism from harm while major structural repairs are carried out in the organ chambers and to the tower of the church. During the time the organ is out of the chambers (stored in large wooden crates on the church property) the parish must raise funds to re-leather the entire organ and clean all of the pipes in the organ (for stability of tone and tuning). This work will be carried out by the Ohio firm of A. R. Schopp's Sons, Inc in conjunction with James Konzelman and the Organ Clearing House. The parish is working hard to raise funds to accomplish this, but the parish is seeking outside funds to augment its fund raising activities. Once fully restored this organ will last many generations. Can you help us restore and save a pipe organ? If you are interested in helping and have questions please contact the Pastor, Fr. Michael Perry at the rectory. Our Lady of Refuge Church, R.C. 2020 Foster Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11210 718 434 5620 On line help can be given through: http://www.ndnyc.org/ndnyc/ndnyc/our_lady_of_refuge_organ_repair.html Special Thanks to James Konzelman for his expert tuning on Saturday and dedication to this project. Online Video to Transform the Performing Arts - Twyla Tharp Online Video is Set to Transform the Performing Arts and Twyla Tharp Will be Major Force I spent this past week with the celebrated choreographer Twyla Tharp in her Manhattan studio. We taped a performance, reviewed archival materials and spent time about talking about video, the Internet and creativity. She is one of the most celebrated artists of our time -- a pioneering choreographer and dancer. She has created scores of dances and performed around the globe since the sixties. She has become more popularly known in recent years from her Tony Award-winning "Movin' Out" show. This year, her ballets will be performed by the Bolshoi, the ABT, the Miami Ballet and Seattle Ballet. She has written an inspiring book about creativity titled the Creative Habit -- and speaks with businesses people about how to apply discipline to the creative process. She has so much insight, inspiration and artistry to share with us. In our first segment, Tharp shares a fascinating story and unseen footage of her use of a reel-to-reel video camera some 35 years ago. The taping was done in the attic of her farmhouse. She taped herself, pregnant at the time. She created elements that would be later used in one of her most celebrated dances, the "Baker's Dozen." Video can evoke unexplored memories. (She frames this in a literary metaphor about cookies from Proust.) She has long believed that video and dance are essential partners. She sees the utility of video for many things -- as workbook, art medium and a notation system for choreography. She is now exploring the impact of of dance through online video. She and her son Jesse Huot have digitized a vast archives of dance archives from rehearsals to performances. Our cultural lives will be in richer as more of this material becomes available. I am pleased to share some of these archives publicly, on Beet.TV, for the first time. The appreciation of the performing arts will explode with Internet video. It's already starting to happen. YouTube, Google, Revver and other video sites are hosting wonderful ballet, opera, jazz, independent cinema and world music and dance of a vast variety. Stephen Tharp plays the Skinner Organ at Rosary Cathedral The Organ at Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral was built by the Skinner Organ Company of Boston in 1931 as their Opus 820 and dedicated with great fanfare with a recital by Professor Palmer Christian of the University of Michigan, and a performance of Elgar's Dream of Gerontius. Ernest Skinner designed and oversaw the construction and installation of the organ at the Cathedral during his final years at the company he founded in 1901 before being forced out in 1936. It is remarkable to think of all of the Skinner Organs that once were to be found in Toledo. However, with time and changing fashions, some people wanted to try to improve Skinner organs, but only managed to compromise their integrity. Mr. Skinner's organs are like the string instruments of Stradivarius; no improvements are needed! In the city of Toledo, after a time many of the "improved" and renovated organs were removed, leaving only two original Skinner Organs; the one at Rosary Cathedral and the newly restored organ at the Toledo Art Museum, Opus 603. I first recorded Stuart Forster at Rosary Cathedral in 1998, and then later Todd Wilson and Ken Cowan. This organ is always a joy to visit, and the staff and clergy of the Cathedral are a joy to work with. This is a short video I made of Stephen Tharp recording the Rosary Cathedral organ on the night of August 31, 2006. The resulting CD will be a collection of much-loved hymns played on this organ. I hope you enjoy these video samples of the CD that will be issued in the winter of 2007. I'm certain that you will agree with me that this organ is truly an American treasure. You will note better sound on these videos. I took the audio files from the sound I recorded for the CD and synchronized it with the video. I think you will appreciate the improvement. If you, my loyal and valued patrons, buy more of my Cds, this will allow me to buy a better camera and some lighting! I genuinely enjoy making these videos, especially for those of you who cannot share in the hair-raising thrill of hearing these spectacular instruments in person. I am a firm believer in the majesty and beauty of the world's greatest pipe organs, and in the need to preserve and document them, as well as promote the incredibly gifted performers who know how to play them so effectively. These instruments and players deserve to be recognized, and I am pleased to serve as their advocate. With your help, we can assure the future of the great pipe organs of the world. My thanks to you for your continued support! Visit the JAV Webstore at www.pipeorgancds.com; there you will find over 70 different titles of organ recordings from around the world Now get ready to enjoy my latest video! Joe Vitacco - JAV Recordings, Inc. http://www.pipeorgancds.com ---------------- From the organist: Tonight I finished a CD recording of hymns, both familiar and unfamiliar, at Holy Rosary Cathedral, Toledo, Ohio. This is the first full-length hymn disc that I have done, and having the opportunity to bring it into fruition on this particular Skinner organ made for an incredibly artistic result and a most memorable experience. On this video, I play Comfort, comfort Ye my People and The Strife is O'er. The sound from the recording session itself is matched up here with the video made during actual takes. This will be my fourth disc for JAV Recordings, and my thirteenth CD recording-to-date. I am very grateful to Joe Vitacco and JAV for asking me to make this recording on such a rare, beautiful and noteworthy instrument. Stephen Tharp.
