Boogie Woogie : Yvon Momboisse - "Death Ray Boogie" Movie recorded at the 38th International Jazz Meeting in Gent, Belgium - May 2008. Supurb Boogie Woogie playing by young French pianist Yvon Momboisse at this well supported Jazz/Dixieland Festival. "Death Ray Boogie" is a fast-tempo piece, generally attributed as originally done by the great pianist Pete Johnson, although it's fair to say that Yvon's version has many elements inprovised to his 'fast and furious' style. Great to see him extend the piece to almost 7 minutes....and the thunderous round of applause from the audience showed they appreciated this too!! Yvon was joined by Brian Turnock on the Double Bass and Michael Senamaud on Drums. Tags: Boogie Woogie Piano Pianist travelchampion |

Boogie Woogie : Left Hand Pattern - 02 Probably the most difficult/complex left hand Boogie Woogie pattern I know. It's 16 beats to the Bar {or notes per cycle} as opposed to the normal 8 - play as fast and hard as possible for the best effect! It's one I haven't copied or learnt from anyone - I stumbled across it and worked it out as I was randomly thrashing away at the piano one day. Part of me thinks that someone somewhere must have done this riff before....but if by chance it hasn't been done {comments/remarks anyone?!} ... I hereby officially name this riff the "TravelChampion Boogie". Good luck and God Bless to anyone who attempts to play it, lol! Heavy Metal : Saxon - "Wheels Of Steel" Movie recorded at The Paradiso Club, Amsterdam - March 2007. Quick story - been a keen fan of Saxon for years and was abit disappointed when I realised a date in my home town of Cardiff on 8th March coincided with a time that I would be away in Holland. Then they announced a gig two days later in Amsterdam where I would be - talk about fate lending a hand! Anyway, superb concert and a great version of my all time favourite Saxon track "Wheels Of Steel" towards the end of the set rounded off a perfect night! Boogie Woogie : Left Hand Fingering Methods This is a short video explaining some of the fingering I use for playing Boogie Woogie left hand riffs. As you will see in the clip, I use an unusual 'transitional' finger method of moving about through some of the key changes. I don't want to call this either a lesson or "instructional video" as I myself am not sure my it's the right way to play things. To illustrate I have used some brief extracts from the 'Bumble Boogie', 'Swanee River' and some brief improvisations. If anyone else plays this way please let me know - maybe we could form a club {lol} Tags: boogie woogie left hand fingering patterns riffs piano travelchampion |

Boogie Woogie : Ben Waters Band - "Melting Pot" Ben Waters Boogie Band, live at the Cork Jazz Festival - October 2006. Track performed is an rip-roaring arrangement of several well known pieces of music, including {towards the end} the 'Bumble Boogie'. Band line-up on the night featured Ben Waters {piano}, Derek Nash and Clive Ashley {saxes}, Chris Lonergan {bass} & Ady Milward {drums}. Reggae Ska : Jimmy Cliff - "Many Rivers To Cross" Grammy Award winning reggae singer song-writer Jimmy Cliff live at the Cardiff Festival, August 2007. The song "Many Rivers To Cross" is a very powerful ballad, and has been covered by many Bands/Artistes including Van Morrison and UB40. I think it's fair to say though, that having heard Jimmy's sensational verson at the Cardiff Festival, the original is nearly always the best! Boogie Woogie : Jorg Hegemann - "Blues and Boogie" German Pianist Jorg Hegemann performing with his 3-Piece Band in the town of Bocham, Germany - March 2007. I am a very keen fan of Jorg's Boogie Woogie playing, but like most good pianists he can play other styles including The Blues. I was quite keen to showcase something 'other than Boogie Woogie' so this movie is a medlay of two pieces {neither of which I know the name of?!} The first piece is slow and bluesy with some lovely touches of 'light and shade' but Boogie Heads fear not - you'll love the second one! Boogie Woogie : Jools Holland - "Bumble Boogie" Track performed with his 18-Piece Rhythm and Blues Orchestra at Le Trebendo Club, Paris - March 2006. These days, Jools Holland is perhaps best known as a TV/Radio Presenter, and Big Band Leader. But as this video shows, he's also a superb pianist with a special talent for old style Boogie Woogie Piano Music. The track shown, i.e. 'The Bumble Boogie', is often played at his concerts and is always a crowd-pleasing show-stopper! Rock And Roll Piano : "Fast Improvisation in C" Me just 'thrashing about' playing some fast {180 Beats per Minute} Rock and Roll in the Key of C. Inspiration for the left hand riff is from an Instructional DVD from the pianist Ben Waters - he uses it in his playing guide to the well known track "Johnny B. Boogie Woogie : "Summertime Bumble" - Performance Me playing "Summertime Bumble Boogie" at a charity 'Pianothon' at the St Davids Hall in Cardiff, 18th November 2006. The piece is 'sort of' an original composition, although it does have brief extracts from the music to 'Summertime' and also the 'Bumble Boogie'...so perhaps it's best termed an 'arrangement'. It is the first time I have attempted to play this piece to an audience and I think it went quite well. Safe to assume I was more than happy to get my hands on a Concert Grand Piano! Boogie Woogie : Jools Holland - "Bumble Boogie" Track performed with his 18 Piece Rhythm and Blues Orchestra at the 'Cafe de Paris' in London, November 2006. The venue was small and intimate, and I found myself a great viewing position where I could overlook the stage and have an excellent view of Jools hands hitting the piano keys. I felt as if I was almost part of a special Boogie Woogie Masterclass! The 'Bumble Boogie' is my favourite Jools Holland Track. Every time I hear it played he throws in lots of variations in both the right and left hand parts. I would call this a 'medium-fast melodic version' - Top Draw!! Boogie Woogie : Jorg Hegemann - "Lady Be Good" German Pianist Jorg Hegemann performing with his 3-Piece Band in the town of Bocham, Germany - March 2007. Jorg is one of my favourite Boogie Pianists which is why I made a special trip to see him. His driving left-hand powerhouse rhythms together with dazzling right-hand runs combine to make Boogie Woogie playing at it's absolute best! Boogie Woogie : Ben Waters Solo Piano - "The Melting Pot" Ben Waters at the Bulls Head, Barnes in London - November 2006. "The Melting Pot" is a superb arrangement of various bits of piano music, including {towards the end} the "Bumble Boogie". Plus points and minus points of the video?! Well...on the one hand it is rather dark...but on the other this is Ben playing solo on a £27000 Concert Yamaha Grand - so the sound quality is really good! Swing Jazz : Jools Holland - "Tuxedo Junction" Jools Holland and his 18-Piece Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, on the official opening night of the new Indigo O2 Arena, in the Docklands Area of London. "Tuxedo Junction" is the old Erskine Hawkins standard - it's often said if you can't play this piece without swinging it, you're playing it wrong?! No worries on that front with Jools and the Band. Great 'Big Band' performance with solos from {1st} Derek Nash on Alto Sax, then Jason McDermid on Trumpet, and finally Nick Lunt on the Baritone Sax. Boogie Woogie : Bob Seeley - "Stride and Boogie" Medley Legendary pianist Bob Seeley at the International Boogie Woogie Festival in Ermelo, Holland - March 2007. Both pieces played at the lively informal 'Pre-show' party, which offered up a great opportunity to watch this fantastic pianist close up. Not sure what the two pieces are called - but ones mainly 'Stride' and the other an out and out 'Boogie Woogie' piece {and for all I know they were improvised anyway?!} For those people who don't know, I hope Bob won't mind me saying he's now 79 years of age - truely an inspiration for those of us who think there's not enough time to learn to play the piano well. Boogie Woogie : Jorg Hegemann - "Shim Sham Shimmey" Superb Boogie Woogie playing by German pianist Jorg Hegemann at the UK Fomag Festival in July 2006. As can be seen, this is Boogie Woogie piano in a traditional Bar Room setting {best place for it?!}. Jorg has a quite distinctive 'high fingers' style to his playing - it seems to give him both tremendous rhythmic power in the left hand, and often a very subtle touch in the right. Quite simply, one of the best Boogie pianists I have seen playing today!! Website:http://www.joerghegemann.info Tags: Boogie Woogie Jorg Hegemann Fomag Festival travelchampion |

Rock And Roll Piano : "Cold Hands Boogie" - Performance Me playing "Cold Hands Boogie" at a charity 'Pianothon' at the St Davids Hall in Cardiff, 17th November 2007. The piece is 'sort of' an original composition. The main left hand riff I got from a Ben Waters Instructional DVD and most of the right hand is just improvising around the C Blues Scale. The title : "Cold Hands Boogie" came about when I realised I wouldn't really have anytime to warm my fingers up before starting the piece?! Overall I was quite pleased with the way it went....but there were a few howlers in there. Really enjoyed getting my hands on the St Davids Hall Concert Grand Piano! Piano Blues : Little Willie Littlefield - "I Have The Blues" This has got to be some of the finest Blues playing I have ever seen live! Movie clip was shot on the main stage at the International Boogie Woogie Festival in Ermelo, Holland - March 2007. Talk about a master of the blues 'clash note', lol! One thing I did observe was that, at times, his left hand was a bouncing down a full 3-4 inches off the keys to get that tub-thumping power blues effect. Wonderful stuff!! Boogie Woogie : Ben Waters Band - "Broken Piano Blues" Ben Waters Boogie Band, live at the Cork Jazz Festival - October 2006. During one of the songs, Ben's digital piano suddenly lost all sound. A couple of technicians were dispatched to the stage to fix the problem, whilst Derek Nash on Saxophone entertained the audience with some impressive improvised solo playing. After a minute or so, the Piano was duly fixed and Ben resumed playing with some great fast Boogie Woogie playing {watch out for a few bars of the classic 'Nutrocker' added into the track!} Ben Waters Website : http://www.benwaters.com Derek Nash Website : http://www.dereknash.com Tags: Boogie Woogie Ben Waters Piano Derek Nash Saxophone Nutrocker Cork Jazz Festival travelchampion |

Boogie Woogie : 2007 UK Festival - 'The Piano Brothers' Duet Boogie Woogie Piano Duets are always great crowd-pleasers at the UK Festival, and they don't come much better than when played by The Piano Brothers, Marcel and Heinz Brunner, who made the trip over from Switzerland. The chemistry between the two brothers on stage is terriffic to watch - making the duets they play great fun! {In this video, Heinz is closest to the camera}. Boogie Woogie : Jools Holland - "Sally Zuzas" A medley of two different recordings of Jools Holland playing the Big Joe Turner classic "Sally Zuzas". First one was made in Dublin in October 2005. Played with the full 18 Piece Band, this version has a great 'swing' feel to it, and really good sound. Second one was made at The Paradiso Club in Amsterdam, March 2007. Played with a smaller touring 10 Piece Band, this version has more of a faster 'driving' rhythm, and a great view of Jools' hands at the piano from the seated balcony view. Progressive Rock : Fish - "Sugar Mice" Song recorded at a concert in Cardiff, September 2007, during one of a series of gigs in the "Clutching At Stars" Tour, promoting his new CD/Album '13th Star'. "Sugar Mice {In The Rain}" is one of my favourite older songs from the Fish's Marillion days, and I was really pleased when it was performed on the night. It features some stunning guitar playing from long time Band member Frank Usher. Fish's music defies trends and fashion, it's a brave statement in these days of banal musical small talk. His career, spanning over 25 years of the entertainment industry, is notable for his charismatic stage performances and uncompromising lyrics.
