Dionne Warwick Deja Vu 1979 R&B Grammy Winner Dionne Warwick was planning to quit the music industry entirely after her tenure ended in 1977 for Warner Brothers Records and use her music education to teach on the University level. In 1978, Clive Davis, legendary producer and head of Arista Records told Dionne "You may be ready to give up the music business, but the business is not ready to give you up." She would soon sign with Arista and would enjoy one of the biggest comebacks in the history of popular music. In 1979, I'll Never Love This Way Again", a huge international hit, ended Dionne Warwick's five year dry spell in the most spectacular fashion. The tune peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, #6 in Canada and #13 on the Billboard Magazine R&B Chart. The tune won Warwick a 1980 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The tune Deja Vu, written by Isaac Hayes and Adrienne Anderson was issued as Dionne's followup single and the tune won for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, the first female vocalist to win in both categories in the same year. Deja Vu was an international smash and peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard AC Chart. Dionne's Arista debut album, Dionne, contained the tune and reveived the RIAA Platinum Award for album sales of over 1 million copies. Dionne was touring with Isaac and he played a little of the unfinished tune and told her she was the only one who could sing it. Dionne remembered how much she liked the tune and begged Isaac to finish it so she could include it on the LP. Barry Manilow brought in lyricist Adrienne Anderson to write the lyrics for the tune. Clive Davis had paired Dionne with producer Barry Manilow with one proviso on the project: they had to record "I'll Never Love This Way Again". Dionne love the tune but initially expressed reservations to Clive about working with Manilow, not because she didn't love Barry's music, her reservation was based upon his unique sound and Dionne stated she didn't want to become Dionne Manilow. The minute Dionne and Barry rehearsed together, the magic struck and Dionne was completely at ease. The album Dionne was critically acclaimed and Dionne was praised for her virtuosity.
