Varanasi, North India From our 3 week´s trip around North India. October 2006. Varanasi वाराणसी Vārāṇasī, also commonly known as Benares or Banaras (Hindi: बनारस, Urdu: بنارس, Banāras and Kashi (Hindi: काशी Kāśī, is a city situated on the banks of the river Ganga (Ganges) in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, regarded holy by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains, and one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. The culture of Varanasi is closely associated with the river Ganges and the river's religious importance. The city has been a cultural and religious centre in northern India for several thousand years. A particular style of classical Hindustani music developed in Varanasi centuries ago, and many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians resided or reside in Varanasi, including Kabir, Ravi Das, Munshi Premchand, Jaishankar Prasad, Acharya Ram Chandra Shukla, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Hariprasad Chaurasia, and Ustad Bismillah Khan. Tulsidas wrote his Ramcharitmanas there, and Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath near Kashi. Ayurveda is said to have originated at Varanasi. Varanasi is the home of Banaras Hindu University. Residents mainly speak Kashika Bhojpuri, which is closely related to the Hindi language. People often refer to Varanasi as "the city of temples", "the holy city of India", "the religious capital of India", "the city of lights", "the city of learning" and the "culture capital of India". American writer Mark Twain wrote, "Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together." It is still unknown as to how and by whom Varanasi was founded. According to legend, the city was founded by the Hindu deity, Shiva, thus making it one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the country. It is one of the seven sacred cities of Hindus. Many Hindu scriptures, including Rigveda, Skanda Purana, Ramayana, and Mahabharata, describe the city. Varanasi is generally believed to be 3,000 years old. According to myth, it is 5,000 years old, being inhabited since the times of the Sumer civilization in Mesopotamia. Varanasi was a commercial and industrial center famous for its muslin and silk fabrics, perfumes, ivory works, and sculpture. During the time of Gautama Buddha (born circa 567 BCE), Varanasi was the capital of the kingdom of Kashi. The celebrated Chinese traveler, Xuanzang, attested that the city was a center of religious, educational, and artistic activities, and that it extended for about 5 km along the western bank of the Ganges. Varanasi became an independent kingdom in the eighteenth century, and under subsequent British rule, it remained a commercial and religious center. In 1910, the British made Varanasi a new Indian state, with Ramanagar as its headquarters but with no jurisdiction over the city of Varanasi itself. Kashi Naresh (Maharaja of Kashi) still resides in the fort of Ramanagar. On March 7, 2006, four bombs went off in an act of terrorism at Varanasi. Around 20 people were reported killed, and many were injured. One of the bombs was planted in the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, a shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman, while another was planted on a platform of the Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station, the main railway station in the city. An Islamic group, Lashkar-e-Kahab, claimed responsibility for the terror attacks. On November 23, 2007 Varanasi faced another bomb blast. The bomb was placed in the civil court of Varanasi. More than 20 people died and over 100 were injured. India TV news channel received an e-mail before 5 minutes of bomb blast saying that there will be bomb blast in different cities of Uttar Pradesh within next 5 minutes. The e-mail address was registered on Yahoo.France. A terrorist organization called HUJI took the responsibility of bomb blast. HUJI is run by a terrorist named Masood Azhar who was released by Indian government in the year 1999 after Air India flight IC 814 was hijacked by Taliban and demanded to release him. Varanasi Weavers Crisis The Varanasi Silk Saris have been an emblem of Indian Culture since ancient times. These beautiful saris woven using handlooms have intricrate designs and patterns made sometimes from gold and silver. Over the years, the demand for these saris which have been the most coveted bridal wear amongst both Hindus and Muslims brides, has reduced. To make matters worse, Chinese "fakes" made on powerlooms are now available. Exploitation by middlemen and these factors have led to a major decline in the industry. There are approximately 500,000 silk weavers in Varanasi. 60 % of the handlooms are closed. Due to lack of work, many highly skilled weavers have chagned professions. There is starvation and malnutrition. There have been several deaths and suicides reported. This is an issue of poverty, child labor, human rights, unfair trade, intellectual property, threat to cultural heritage. One of the main reasons is unchecked and insensitive globalization. This is a video report highlighting this issue. Made by PVCHR ( People's vigillance committee on human rights - a human rights organization working in Varanasi) and (AHRC) Asian Human, Rights Commission, it features the report by Paul Mason of BBC. Through this video, we hope to spread awareness of this issue. Please let your friends know about this issue by sending this video. Riot in Varanasi India, and a Girl with a bottle Witness a mini riot in India as a temple is forced down by diggers. The Shiva Temple was built on private land near the holy Ganges River at Assi Ghat, Varanasi, (UP) India. The land is owned by a wealthy hotel owner who plans to build a hotel there, so wealthy westerners and Israelis can watch the Ganges and have life experiences. Not surprisingly the locals are upset. See the armed police throw stones back at protesters. The film starts with a balancing act by a very multi jointed young lady seranaded by her drum playing brother. The film ends with a visit to the Varanasi Jugganeth Temple, just up the road from Assi Ghat. Varanasi is the best place! Ep 7: Varanasi We arrive in Varanasi. One of the oldest living cities in the world, Varanasi is the spiritual center of Hinduism. The city stretches along the shores of the River Ganges (known to locals as The Ganga), whose holy waters are said to absolve sin. The elderly and infirmed from across the Hindu world travel to Varanasi; dying here gives one direct access to enlightenment and heaven. The funeral ritual described in this episode is one of the most incredible scenes we have ever witnessed. Bodies are carried through the streets by chanting families and friends to the Ghats- cement stairs along the shore of the Ganges- where they are cremated in open wood fires that have supposedly been burning since the beginning of time. Women, to this day, are not allowed to attend the funerals because the widows used to fling themselves on the fires to ascend to heaven with their husbands. Ganga arti, Hindu blessing at Varanasi. The Hindu holy city of Varanasi in Indai is the site of about 150 to 200 cremations a day on the banks of the river Ganges (Ganga in Hindi). When the sun sets and the cremations stop, a blessing, or puja, is performed, near to the holy sites where people are cremated. Tags: cremation hindu hindi varanasi india |

Varanasi Varanasi is one of the holiest cities according to Hindu belief. But what can I say about Varanasi? Maybe some travellers I met on the way to Varansi had the best description for this place: they told me it is one of the most interesting, but at the same time also one of the most ugliest places in India. You have the dizzling alleys of the old quarter, the busy ghats with the crematories, temples and much more! We were even lucky to get some monkeys in our toilet :-) Other things are the typical electricity shortages and a bad experience when we witnessed a robbery of an Indian woman right on the ghats during an electricity fall out at night. Everything went so quick, a scream and someone running up the stairs into the alleys..... I dont want to scare anyone. This could happen in every major town, even in front of my home. Personally we had only good experiences, but seeing this leaves a bad taste somehow. Ok, it took me a while to think about showing pics of dead bodies and ongoing cremations on a website. Isnt it offending to show pictures of such an intimate, personal experience of the mourning family? Well, the way Hindus integrate the death as a part of normal life, and especially in Varanasi, explaining it to the people who want to go there, before they go there could be useful, too. People get an impression of what to expect and how to behave. Because walking along the Ghats it is nearly impossible to avoid the crematory scenes. I dont have to mention that this is a religious and very inimate experience for the Hindu people - so never ever disturb the scene or take pictures from the Ghats. You dont want to see tourist on your family´s funeral, too. Pics shown here were taken from a boat on the Ganga river, far away from the riverbanks in respect to the people. The Ghats are supposed to be built by the gods thousands of years ago - Varanasi is said to be the oldest city of India, by the way, even if the proof might be impossible and most temples are quite new, since Muslim invaders once destroyed all Hindu temples here. With the Ghats there came the everburning fire. The different crematories are family run, and the fire is supposed to be lighted without a stop from generation to generation. Because it is the holiest Hindu place and being cremated and put into the Ganges here is the best you can do for your Karma - people from all over India come to Varansi to die here. There are many houses around the crematories where people wait for their death. The cremation is done with the wood of the Banyan tree. The oily wood keeps on burning even during rain and it neutralizes the smell of the smoke. The bodies get washed in the holy floods of the Ganges first - a symbolic washing away all sins. There is also a difference of how the body is put on the wood - if I remember correctly Bengal people are situated on the wood with their head to the riverbanks, others the other way around. The fire gets lighted from the everburning fire inside the building. This creamtion now seperates the body from the soul - so the ashes are put into the holy river and the soul is freed for reincarnation. Therefore the head must split by the heat of the fire or the oldest son of the family has to open it with a bamboo. But not every person gets cremated. Sadhus the holy men have seperated their soul from the body already during their lifetime by giving up their common life and avoiding all needs. Also children to a certain age, pregnant women, people bitten by snakes or lepers dont get burned. They get sent to the ground of the holy river. So what can happen is that a family has not enough money to buy enough wood of the Banyan tree to burn the complete body. Or the exceptions I mentioned before come up to the waterline. This is the reason why body parts and even complete bodies sometimes float down the Ganga river. Keep that in mind when you do a rivercruise, so you wont get shocked if you come along a situation like this.
