T.Zaalishvili sings Lensky's aria from "Eugene Onegin" Georgian Tenor Tenghiz Zaalishvili sing Lensky's "Oh where have you gone my youth" Translation: Where, where, where have you gone, O golden days of my spring? What will the approaching day have in store for me? It escapes my eyes, It is hidden from me! Will I fall to the deadly arrow, Or will it pass by me? What is to happen will happen ... There is a fated time For life and for sleep. Blessed is the simple working day And blessed is the day of dread. Will the sun shine on me at daybreak And will its brightness stay with me? Or will I, well, will I, perhaps, descend Into the darkness and mystery of my tomb of death? ... And will all memory of this weird poet fade into the abyss? The world will forget me, but will you?, You!... Olga...? Tell me ..., Will you, my maiden of beauty, Come to shed a tear over my untimely grave ... And, maybe, think "he did love me!" ... "He was devoted to me". O dark morn of a wretched life! Ah! Olga, I did love you, To you alone I was devoted. O dark dawn of a wretched life! Yes Olga, I did love you! My dear friend, my dearest friend, Come, O come to me ... I can be your man! Where, where, where have you gone, O golden days of my spring? A group of peasants sing a comic song about the serenading of a miller's daughter. Tatyana is reading a romantic novel but her mother tells her that real life is different. Visitors arrive: Olga's fiancé Lensky (tenor), a young poet, and his friend Eugene Onegin (baritone), a world-weary St Petersburg 'drawing-room automaton' (Nabokov). Lensky introduces Onegin to the Larin family. Onegin is initially surprised that Lensky has chosen the extrovert Olga rather than her romantic elder sister. Tatyana for her part is immediately and strongly attracted to Onegin. Scene 2: Tatyana's room Tatyana confesses to her nurse that she is in love. Left alone she writes a letter to Onegin driven by the realization that she is fatally and irreversibly drawn to him (the celebrated 'Letter Scene'). When the old woman returns Tatyana asks her to arrange for the letter to be sent to Onegin. Scene 3: Another part of the estate Onegin arrives to see Tatyana and give her his answer to her letter. He explains, not unkindly, that he is not a man who loves easily and is unsuited to marriage. Tatyana is crushed and unable to reply. Act 2 Scene 1: The ballroom of the Larin house Tatyana's name-day party. Onegin is irritated with the country people who gossip about him and Tatyana, and with Lensky for persuading him to come. He decides to revenge himself by dancing and flirting with Olga. Lensky becomes extremely jealous. Olga is insensitive to her fiancé and apparently attracted to Onegin. There is a diversion, while a French neighbour called Monsieur Triquet (tenor) sings some couplets in honour of Tatyana, after which the quarrel becomes more intense. Lensky renounces his friendship with Onegin in front of all the guests, and challenges Onegin to a duel, which the latter is forced, with many misgivings, to accept. Scene 2: On the banks of a wooded stream, early morning Lensky is waiting for Onegin, and sings of his uncertain fate and his love for Olga. Onegin arrives. They are both reluctant to go ahead with the duel but lack the power to stop it. Onegin shoots Lensky dead. When Zurga enters and reminds them it is time to select a leader, they choose him. They agree to give him absolute power and he accepts. Nadir, a young fisherman and former friend of Zurga's appears, and they joyfully greet each other. Left alone, Zurga and Nadir recall their former rivalry over the beautiful priestess Leïla, and how, to save their friendship, they swore never to see her again (Au fond du temple saint). They are interrupted by news of the arrival of veiled woman who, to ward off evil spirits, is to pray for fishermen at sea. She is accompanied by the high priest Nourabad and is welcomed by the people. Zurga has her swear that she will remain veiled and chaste; if she does so, she will be rewarded with the finest pearl found, if not, she will die. The woman is Leïla, and in spite of her veil, she and Nadir recognize each other. After she reaffirms her vows and is led to the temple by Nourabad, all leave except Nadir. He tells how he has dreamt of her and followed her here (Je crois entendre encore). He falls asleep, and Leïla appears on a rock above the shore. When he wakes, she removes her veil, and they sing of their love. Je Crois Entendre Encore Je crois entendre encore Caché sous les palmiers Sa voix tendre et sonore Comme un chant de ramiers. T.Zaalishvili sings baiati with duduki Audio with pictures of a beautiful Tbilisi(Georgia) Patara Kakhi, King Erekle II, had an ashug named Sayatnova. Sayatnova gained particular popularity among the ashugs and profoundly influenced the creative work of his contemporaries and the generations of Ashugs to come. He also contributed to Georgian literature and is considered to be the founder of the mukhambazi verse in Georgian poetry. There used to be a great many ashugs in the 18th century Georgia but, according to the words of the Russian writer, Valeri Briusov, "Anything accomplished by Sayatnova's predecessors pales under Sayatnova's halo." The legend has it that when Sayatnova started to recite his poems, nightingales would stop to listen him and delight in his songs. The word ashug is of Arabic origin (ashiq) and means an amorous person or a poet glorifying love. Sayatnova was a poet celebrating love but at the same time he was the warrior of King Erekle's advance-guard and wherever the fate of Georgia was at stake, he was with the army playing his saza and encouraged the Georgian warriors in the most difficult moments, instilling in them the hope for victory. We know very little about Sayatnova's life. Even the dates of his birth and death are not known for sure. It is through his poems and postscripts to his poems that we are able to find out about some details of his biography. Neither is his last name known since, according to the ashug tradition, Sayatnova is the poet's chosen pseudonym. Arutin was his Christian name. The bard of the Georgian King I am... Sayatnova, Arunita people say. Sayatnova lived in Tbilisi. "Tbilisi, the land of Kartli, is my homeland. My mother is from Avlabar and my father - from Allepo," he relates in one of his Azeri poems. In another poem he says he is the son of Mighdis. This name was given to people who had been to Jerusalem and had prayed on the grave of the Lord. The duduk is one of the oldest double reed instruments in the world. Variants of the duduk can be found in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Persia, Turkey and even as far away as the Balkans. Besides being called variations of the word "duduk", such as "duduki" (in Georgia), "mey" in Turkey, "balaban" (in Azerbaijan and in parts of Central Asia), "tüdük" in Turkmenistan (although different instrument, similar to "tutek" in Azerbaijan. Balkan Duduk While the term duduk mostly refers to a double reed instrument, it sometimes also refers to a kind of blocked-end flute, which in some part of Macedonia is also called kaval or kavalce. Made of maple or other wood, it comes in two sizes: 700-780mm and 240-400mm (duduce). The blocked end is flat. Playing the duduk is fairly straightforward and easy, thus it is widely used throughout Macedonia. Its sound is clean and pleasant. Plays two octaves, with diatonic and chromatic tones. When played, it is held vertically in front of the body. These instruments are made by Stojanče Kostovski. He is considered the founder of Georgian classical music. As a young boy he sang in a choir and learned to play the organ in the St. Mary Catholic Church of Kutaisi. His first tutor was his brother Ivan, who later became a conductor. Zakharia moved to Tbilisi in 1887 as a chorister in the St. Mary Assumption Catholic Church of Tbilisi, eventually entering the music school there, studying French horn and composition. During 1900-1903 he studied composition under Sergei Taneyev at the Moscow Conservatory. Upon returning to his native land, Paliashvili began to play a strong role in developing national music in Georgia. He collected Georgian folk songs, co-founded the Georgian Philharmonic Society, and became head of the Tbilisi Conservatory. Paliashvili composed works for symphony orchestra (e.g., Georgian Suite on Folk Themes), but is probably best known for his vocal music, which includes choruses and songs. His major works in this regard are the operas Abesalom da Eteri (Absalom and Eteri) (premiered 1919, although a verson of Act III was performed in 1913), Daisi (Twilight) (1923), and Latavra (1927). Vintage collection-Georgian vocal quartet Old and rare recordng Scales used in traditional Georgian music have, like most European scales, octaves divided into seven tones (eight including the octave), but the spacing of the tones is different. As with most traditional systems of tuning, traditional Georgian folk music uses a just perfect fifth. Between the unison and the fifth, however, come three evenly-spaced notes, producing a compressed (compared to most European music) major second, a neutral third, and a stretched perfect fourth. Likewise, between the fifth and the octave come two evenly-spaced notes, producing a compressed major sixth and a stretched minor seventh. This system of tuning renders thirds as the most consonant interval after fifths, which resulted in the third being treated as a stable interval in Georgia long before it acquired that status in Western music Some consider the Georgian scale a "quintave system" (as opposed to the octave-repeating "octave system"). Due to the neutral tuning within the quintave system, the eighth degree or octave is slightly widened, which often results in a rise in pitch from the beginning of a song to the end. Because of the influence of the Western music and its different system of tuning, present-day performances of Georgian folk music often employ Western tuning, bringing the seconds, fourths, sixths, and sevenths, and sometimes the thirds as well, closer to where they would lie in a Western scale. Musical literature and traditions Georgian folk songs are often centered on feasts called supra, where songs and toasts to God, fatherland, long life, love and other topics. Traditional feast songs include "Zamtari", which is about winter and is sung to commemorate ancestors, and "Mravalzhamier", a joyous hymn. Work songs are also widespread. The orovela, for example is a type of work song found in eastern Georgia. There is also a distinct and rich tradition of Georgian sacred music, both settings of hymns for the Orthodox Church, and folk hymns and ritual songs that contain a great deal of "pagan"? imagery. There are, in addition, many lyric love songs, dance songs, lullabies, and travelling songs, among others. Choirs are generally entirely male, though some female groups also exist; mixed-gender choirs are rare, but also exist. (An example of the latter is the Zedashe ensemble, based in Sighnaghi, Kakheti.) Varieties within the country Georgia is a small country, but it is very mountainous. For this reason, folk music styles from different regions of Georgia differ very widely, which makes it difficult to speak of characteristics of "Georgian folk music" as a monolithic whole. Table songs from Kakheti in eastern Georgia usually feature a simple, drone-like bass part with two soloists singing the top two parts. Kakhetian melodies sound like recitative part of the time (with great emphasis on the words, which are highly poetic), and then break into series of ornate, cascading ornaments. The two melody parts do play off each other, but there is not the type of complicated back-and-forth between the parts that one hears in Gurian trio songs. Perhaps the most well-known example of music in Kakhetian style is the patriotic "Chakrulo", which was chosen to accompany the Voyager spacecraft in 1977. In Rach'a and Ajara, male singers accompany themselves on bagpipe. Dissonance is prominent in the west, in Mingrelia and Guria, which also features high pitches and outrageous, yodelling-like vocals called krimanchuli. Svaneti's traditions are perhaps the oldest and most traditional due to the region's isolation. Svan harmonies are irregular and angular, and the middle voice leads two supporting vocals, all with a narrow range. The 20th century has seen professional choirs achieve renown in Georgia, especially Anzor Erkomaishvili's Rustavi Choir.
