HIGHLIGHTS Red Bull Air Race Detroit 2008 Kirby Chambliss (USA) beat Paul Bonhomme (GBR) in a spectacular Red Bull Air Race World Championship battle in Detroit on Sunday in front of a crowd of 750,000 U.S. and Canadian spectators lined up along the banks of the Detroit River. Chambliss was clocked in a winning time of 1:12.08, just 0.15 seconds faster than Bonhomme (1:12.23) in the third race of the 10-stop 2008 World Championship. The Brit still leads the championship. But Chambliss has proven he can be beaten. "It worked out fairly well," said Chambliss "I went crazy and went out as fast as I could fly. I know Paul's going to put down a fast time. He's got a fast airplane. I don't know whether he went just a little bit conservative or something. But I'll take the win." Hannes Arch of Austria took third with a clean run and a time of 1:12.73 beating Mike Mangold (1:15.44) in the 3rd Place Fly-Off. Arch, who joined the World Championship just last season, is clearly no rookie now having come second in the first race in Abu Dhabi, fourth in San Diego and now has another podium position in Detroit. Racing in Detroit was hampered by heavy winds that forced the cancellation of the Qualifying sessions on Saturday. But the 12 pilots more than made up for that with one of the most breathtaking and exciting races seen to date, with pilots bettering the previous time in almost every run. The Great Air Race - England to Melbourne 1934 The MacRobertson Trophy Air Race took place October, 1934 as part of the Melbourne Centenary celebrations. The idea of the race was devised by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, and a prize fund of $75,000 was put up by Sir Macpherson Robertson, a wealthy Australian confectionery manufacturer, on the conditions that the race be named after his MacRobertson confectionery company, and that it be organised to be as safe as possible. The race was organised by the Royal Aero Club and would run from RAF Mildenhall in East Anglia to Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne. There were 5 compulsory stops at Baghdad, Allahabad, Singapore, Darwin and Charleville, Queensland, otherwise the competitors could choose their own routes. A further 22 optional stops were provided with stocks of fuel and oil by Shell and Stanavo. The Royal Aero Club put some effort into persuading the countries along the route to improve the facilities at the stopping points. The basic rules were: no limit to the size of aircraft or power, no limit to crew size, no pilot to join aircraft after it left England. Aircraft must carry three days' rations per crew member, floats, smoke signals and efficient instruments. There were prizes for the outright fastest aircraft, and for the best performance on a handicap formula by any aircraft finishing within 16 days. Take off date was set at dawn (6:30) October 20, 1934. The initial field of over 60 had by then been whittled down to 20, including the 3 purpose-built de Havilland DH.88 Comet racers, two of the new generation of American all-metal passenger transports, and a mixture of earlier racers, light transports and old bombers. First off the line, watched by a crowd of 60,000, were Jim & Amy Mollison in the Comet Black Magic, and they were early leaders in the race until forced to retire at Allahabad with engine trouble. This left the scarlet Comet Grosvenor House flown by Flight Lt. Charles Scott and Captain Tom Campbell Black well ahead of the field. This racer went on to win in a time of less than 3 days, despite flying the last stage with one engine throttled back because of an oil-pressure indicator giving a faulty low reading. Perhaps more significantly in the development of popular long-distance air travel, the second and third places were taken by passenger transports, with the KLM Douglas DC-2 Uiver gaining a narrow advantage over Roscoe Turner's Boeing 247-D, both completing the course less than a day behind the winner. The most dramatic part of the race was when the Uiver, hopelessly lost after becoming caught in a thunderstorm, ended up over Albury NSW. The townsfolk responded magnificently - an engineer at the power station signalled "Albury" to the plane by turning the town lights on and off, and an announcer on radio station 2CO Corowa appealed for cars to line up on the racecourse to light up a runway for the plane. The plane landed, and next morning was pulled out of the mud by locals to fly on and win the handicap section of the race. In gratitude KLM made a large donation to Albury Hospital and Alf Waugh, the Mayor of Albury, was awarded a title in Dutch nobility. Highlights Budapest Red Bull Air Race 2008 Austrian ace Hannes Arch won the Red Bull Air Race in Budapest 2008, claiming his first-ever victory, in only his second season. Britain's Steve Jones was second while compatriot Paul Bonhomme, the current leader, was third after making an error in the semi-finals. The result means Arch is now in second place in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship with three more races to go. "It is just overwhelming, an amazing feeling," said Arch, who has had a stellar rise from rookie last year to one of this year's championship contenders. "I couldn't believe it. You have to stay focused right until the very end and now I am just really happy." Arch also had the fastest time of the day with 1:03.34 in the semi-finals. Some 600,000 spectators lined the banks of the River Danube on Wednesday, a Hungarian national holiday, to watch the race under clear blue sunny skies. Highlights Porto Red Bull Air Race 2008 Austria's Hannes Arch won his second consecutive Red Bull Air Race today with a thrilling victory in Porto and Gaia in front of 650,000 spectators, beating American Kirby Chambliss and knocking Britain's Paul Bonhomme off the top of the World Championship to take the lead. Arch now leads with 54 points. Bonhomme is second on 45 and Chambliss is third with 44 points. Arch needs one point in the final race in Perth on 1st and 2nd November to win the championship. Bonhomme would have to win the season finale and hope Arch would finish with zero points. A total of one million spectators packed the banks of the Douro River during the two days of racing making it one of the biggest crowds at a sporting event in Portugal. Every inch of space was filled with people eager to catch a glimpse of the pilots competing on the high speed track beneath brilliant blue skies against the breathtaking backdrop of the famous red-tiled roofs in the steep river valley. Red Bull Air Race World Series 2008 - London - Race Day London: 3 August 2008 Link to full version: http://lsq.tv/reviews-n-stuff/28.html The second away day covering the Red Bull Air Race, an early start to pick my spot and I got a great viewpoint. My spot was bounded by two Fatboys -- bean bags that is -- so there was space all day. A very exciting day. My tip from saturday, Kirby the only flyer we got to speak to that day, won the race so please excuse my cheering on the tape. Weather wise it was horrible chilly, showery, very windy day that made flying at high speed a great deal more challenging and that lead to some great upsets letting our boy through. Result. For a spectacular day out it's highly recommended. Red Bull Air Race Detroit 2008 Practice Britain's Paul Bonhomme set the pace in the final timed training session at the Red Bull Air Race in Detroit on Friday ahead of the weekend's racing, topping the time sheets on the windswept course that twice crosses the international border between the United States and Canada. Red Bull World Championship Air Race championship points leader Bonhomme, who is unbeaten in 2008 and looking for his third straight victory in Detroit after winning in Abu Dhabi and San Diego, was clocked in a time of 1:13.86 in the final session, ahead of American Kirby Chambliss in second (1:15.28) and Hannes Arch of Austria in third place (1:16.13) ahead of Saturday's Qualifying Session that will whittle the 12-man field down to eight for Sunday's Super Eights. "I had a better run than the others due to the weather conditions being less bumpy when I was out there," said Bonhomme, who leads the championship with 18 points after two races and watched from his hangar as winds picked up and scattered rain marred the training for many who followed him. "So it wasn't really a good assessment of where we all stand today." The heavy winds forced the cancellation of the third and final training session on Friday. With his newly refurbished 2007 engine and last year's propeller reinstalled in his Edge 540 as part of a routine overhaul, Bonhomme led the field through the 3.8-mile long course over the Detroit River at speeds of up to 230 mph just a few metres above the surface while enduring forces of up to 10G. A sell-out crowd is expected for Saturday's Qualifying session and Sunday's race. The nearly 50,000 tickets on the Detroit side of the river have already been sold out while there are still a few tickets available on the Canadian side in Windsor. The Red Bull Air Race pilots twice cross the international border during the race and spend about 13 seconds of the 75-second run in Canada. American Mike Mangold, the defending champion who trails Bonhomme by three points after two races, had the fastest recorded time in the first training session on Thursday but fell back to fourth on Friday. Hungary's Peter Besenyei grabbed fifth and Britain's Steve Jones, helped by extensive modifications to his plane's aerodynamics since San Diego, was sixth. Spain's Alejandro Maclean, who took delivery of his new MXS just before the race in Detroit, has struggled with the new plane and was 10th -- more than 28 seconds behind Bonhomme.
