More About Alcoholism tk 6 The Fourth Step is divided into four parts: Resentments, wrongs, fears and sexual inventory. Each of these parts is designed to identify specific character defects. The cardinal defects exposed by the Fourth Step are resentment, fear, dishonesty and selfishness. Other undesirable personality traits such as laziness, procrastination, envy, jealousy, bad temper and pride will also come to light but these are subsidiary to the cardinal defects. It will become obvious when working the Fourth Step that all of these defects are the product of fear arising from the perception of threats to the natural instincts for sex, security and society. The first part of the fourth Step is an inventory of resentments, the number one killer of alcoholics and addicts. To begin the inventory, the definition of certain terms used in the Steps must be looked up in the dictionary and written out so that they can be discussed with the advisor and thoroughly understood. These terms are: Inventory, Anger, Resentment, Fear, Ambitions, Self-esteem, Security, Relationships, Wrongs, and, Domination. The definition of inventory will make it clear that an inventory is a written list and that this will hold true, not only for the Fourth Step, but also for the Tenth and Eleventh Steps as well. It will also be seen that an inventory is not an autobiography. The next task is to make a list of all of the significant people in the person's life beginning with parents, siblings, other family members and family friends and continuing through the person's life to the present time. This starts the process of memory tapping which is essential to a proper inventory and serves to make sure that no one is omitted who should be on the resentment list or the amends list. The addicted person then must ask five question concerning these significant people in order to determine if he needs to write about them in his resentment list. These questions are: 1. Did this person harm you in any way? 2. Did this person wrong you in any way? 3. Did this person threaten you in any way? 4. Did this person anger you in any way? 5. Was this person unfair to you in any way? If the answer to any of these questions is in the affirmative, then that person will be added to the resentment list. The resentment list is divided into three columns. The first column is just the name of the person resented. The second column is a narrative statement of the wrongs committed against the addicted person by the person resented and the third column is a list of the affects on the addicted person as a result of those wrongs. This column will show the affects on the person's ambitions, self-esteem, security, and, relationship s(including sex) and will also reveal that every resentment is the result of fear. Once this list is completed, the next task is to understand the nature of resentments as a powerful negative force which has controlled the person's life and which, if not gotten rid of, will surely kill him, since resentments block him from God and his only hope for recovery is the intervention of a loving God. He must see that anger is a poison and that for him there is no such thing as justified anger any more than he could justify taking a poison pill. He must also see that he has to be rid of these resentments and that he cannot get rid of them himself; he is as powerless over his resentments as he is over drugs or alcohol. There is a spiritual answer to the resentment problem just as there is to every problem the addicted person will encounter during his lifetime. To be free of his resentments, the addicted person must pray for the persons he resents, asking God to give them everything he would want for himself. He must pray for them even though he does not really want these things for them and if he persists, he will find that he has come to want it for them. He must also forgive the wrongs which he has listed in his resentment list and if he is not willing to do this, he must pray for the willingness to forgive and if he persists in this prayer, he will be granted the gift of willingness. When these things are done, the addicted person will be relieved of his resentments and will be set free for the first time in his life. This spiritual remedy for resentments will be utilized over and over again as the addicted person works his Tenth and Eleventh Steps. It should be noted that these prayers constitute a major leap of faith for the doubter and the answer will add immediately to his growing belief in the power of God. The second part of the fourth Step is an inventory of the addicted person's own wrongs; his defects of character. The defects inventoried in this part are dishonesty, selfishness, and fear. To accomplish this, he refers to his resentment list and puts aside the wrongs others have done him and resolutely looks at his own wrongs. He will answer five questions concerning each person on his resentment list which will demonstrate the existence of his defects and will identify some of the people he has wronged. These questions are: 1. Where was I dishonest?; 2. Where was I selfish?; 3. Where was I afraid?; 4. Where was I self-seeking?; and, 5. Where was I at fault? When these questions are answered in narrative form, the second part of the Fourth Step has been completed. It should be noted that this part of the Fourth Step is not intended as an indictment of the inventory taker but is, rather, a catalogue of his insanity, the things which block him from God. Further, it is a demonstration of those actions, motivations and attitudes which did not work. The very practical effect of the inventory is to find out what it is about ourselves and our actions which kept us in a constant state of confusion, unrest and failure. It is also the place where the addicted person begins to compile his Eighth Step amends list and begins the process of becoming ready to make amends to the people he has harmed by his conduct. The third part of the Fourth Step is an inventory of the addicted person's fears. This requires that he list his fears and their cause. He looks to see where he felt threatened and lists the source of the threat. Some typical fears are: Loss of what he has; Not getting what he wants or needs; Rejection; Failure; God's punishment; Sickness, injury and pain; Growing old; Drinking or drugging again; Being found out for who he really is and what he has done; Death; His past catching up with him; Confrontation; Being alone; Never having a loving relationship; and, Having to make amends for his wrongs. There are certain things which the addicted person must come to understand. Among these, the most important are that fear is his enemy and that fear is a clear demonstration of the absence of faith. He must also know that every time he feels bad, there will be a fear involved and that the fears he feels are products of his mind; they are but phantoms having no reality. It should be noted that the fears he is inventorying are not the fears which flow naturally from the presence of immediate danger; the "flight or fight" syndrome. They are the fears which relate only to future harm and as such have no reality. Most of his fears will relate to something which happened in the past where he had a disastrous result and he will be suffering from the idea that the past will always repeat itself. He must come to understand that the past does not control his present or his future if he changes the way he acts; different action will lead to a different result automatically. Finally, he must know that every time he allows a fear to grip him he is insulting his God by not trusting God to protect and guide him! Since the addicted person can not get rid of his fears himself, he must turn to God for the answer. He should say a prayer in substance as follows: God, these are my fears. (He tells God his fears) I am powerless over these fears. I cannot get rid of them myself I need Your help. God please remove these fears from me and show me what You would have me be. Amen. He has completed the third part of the Fourth Step. The fourth part of the Fourth Step is the sex inventory. This inventory is specifically designed to demonstrate the existence of selfishness and dishonesty as very real defects of character and to identify some of the persons who have been harmed by the conduct of the inventory taker. It will generally show why the person has never been able to have a successful, happy and healthy relationship. Among the things which become apparent are dependency, control and lustful conduct which negated the love and caring required for a moral liaison. God's commandments of conduct were violated at every turn and the person acted with willful disregard for the rights and feelings of others. However, those who are advising the addicted person should keep in mind that God alone should judge this sex conduct and that the sex powers of the inventory taker were Godgiven and therefore good. The problem is in the selfishness and dishonesty of the person in the use of his God-given powers. This selfishness and dishonesty is about to be removed through God's grace and the person is going to be on a different path. Condemnation at this stage can set back the entire recovery process at a time when it is beginning to bear wonderful fruit. The sex inventory is taken by first listing all of the people with whom the addicted person has had sex relations during his lifetime. Once this is done, then he must answer a series of questions about each of the people on his list. These questions are designed to identify his defects and to show the people he has harmed by his sex conduct. These questions are: 1. Where was I dishonest? 2. Where was I selfish? 3. Where was I self-seeking? 4. Did I hurt this person? 5. Did I arouse suspicion and jealousy? 6. Where was I at fault? And, What should I have done instead? The answers will invariably show that the addicted person has been selfish and dishonest in the extreme in his relationships and that he has hurt many people. The sex instinct is so powerful that he has little or no control over these defects himself and he must have God's help to be set free of them. The process of healing starts with the crafting of an ideal for his future relationship life and this ideal will come from God if he asks for it. He must ask God to direct his thinking and to reveal the ideal to him. He will then write down his ideal in the form of a prayer and ask God to help him to live up to this ideal in all his future relationships. He must now turn to God in all questionable situations, seeking God's will for him before he becomes involved in any sexual activity. Counsel with others is also advisable but he must let God be the final judge. The rule is that our sex powers are God-given and therefore good but they are not to be used lightly or selfishly and they are not to be hated or loathed. When sex becomes very troublesome, the addicted person should consult his spiritual advisor before making any commitments and he should consider what God would have him do before he acts. It is also very helpful to turn his thoughts to helping others so that he can get out of self and this will often quiet the powerful urge he is experiencing. He has then completed the fourth part of the Fourth Step. In order to complete the Fourth Step, two things remain to be done. First, the addicted person must compile a list of all the people he has harmed. This list then becomes his Eighth Step list. Second, he must list his defects of character as they have been revealed by his inventory. He has then completed his Fourth Step. Tags: Alcoholics Anonymous 12 steps aa Recovery help |

BINGE DRINKING IN AMERICA: Part 3 of 3 BINGE DRINKING IN AMERICA: Part 3 of 3 What if an American President used alcohol to buy votes to get elected? What if Federal Judges interrupted court proceedings to drink alcohol? While few would deny that alcohol has been a problem for our society, many would be astonished to know we drink less today than in earlier periods in our history. This is the story of America as seen from the bottom of the drinking glass, and the astonishing role alcohol has played in the history of our nation.
