1996 Eve Chalom Mathew Gates - US Nationals FD Some very strange, delightful, and wonderful winds were blowing from the Skating Club of Detroit in the mid-nineties. American ice dance audiences were not at all used to such excellence, and a great deal of enthusiasm was generated for a number of young teams. It's hard to verbalize why this ice dancing was so much different from what had preceded it, but it was a 'clipper ship' of change and advancement, sweeping up the entire American program in its wake. I believe this was that unusual US Nationals where only one team (Punsalan/Swallow) was 100% American. The rest were amalgams and combinations of Russian, British, and American girls and boys. Most would not last, and quickly turned to coaching and choreography, but they managed to breath new life into a stuffy sport! Eve certainly lived up to her namesake, and a great deal of sex appeal creeped onto the ice with teams demonstrating moves and attitudes that were far more provocative and titillating than anything that had ever been allowed on the ice before. (I can remember Hilary Green and Glyn Watts scandalizing the skating world back in the 70's with a peck of a kiss in their program.) Some of these crotch shots and skirt ruffles would have ignited flames in the feathered hats of earlier skating judges, but the skating establishment was convinced to go with the flow of input from new, immigrant coaching! We also see some hydro-blading, promulgated by the great Canadians Bourne/Kraatz. I still do not see how they teach such young skaters to skate soooo well!!!
