McCain Talks About Anbar Awakening...Before The Surge Here's video John McCain on January 5, 2007, saying he is optimistic about Anbar because of our newly developing relationships with Anbar's sheiks (this is the so-called Anbar Awakening that began in 2006). This was of course before the surge -- the very same surge he now credits with having started the Anbar Awakening. H/T to HuffPo's Seth Colter Walls who found the transcript with McCain's remarks. Seth also has posted a thorough debunking of McCain's false claim about the "Awakening." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/22/mccain-gets-history-of-th_n_114419.html Tags: John McCain Anbar Awakening Sheiks Surge |

Anbar Uncovered - Iraq September 2007 President Bush may be hailing Anbar as the surge's great success but does this analysis hold up? Locals claim the US is sending in hit squads to take out insurgents - but they're killing the wrong people. "Everyone's gone. We're scared to stay here because of the random killings", claims one man. Notes on every door say the residents fled because; "the Americans killed five people at night for no reason". Surge tactics are to patrol this area on foot. But the few people the marines come across are afraid and suspicious. "These people are obviously scared out of their minds", states one soldier. Rumours of the American hit squads are spreading panic. The marines acknowledge that Special Forces are flying in but they're not told why. Instead, they do their best to try and win over a fearful population. Another day, another village, same story. "Two days ago, the Americans came and killed my brothers in their beds", alleges one man. "Look, there are bits of their bones, teeth and brains". "It wasn't marines", protests a soldier. "And if it's something the military did, they had to do it for a reason". The strain of long deployments in Iraq is clearly getting to these soldiers. Back at camp, they speak of their desire to return home. "My mum hasn't seen us together in almost four years", states one. "No amount of money is worth being here".President Bush may be hailing Anbar as the surge's great success but does this analysis hold up? Inside Anbar - Iraq August 2007 The 'almost breathtaking' turnaround in Anbar is often held up as an example of US success in Iraq. In the second of his exclusive embed reports, Sean Smith reveals what life is really like there. The village in Anbar is a ghost town. Notes on every door say residents fled because the Americans killed five people. "These people are obviously scared out of their minds", states a marine. Another soldier tries to reason with an Iraqi who wants to file a complaint. He accuses the soldiers of killing his brothers and stealing his money. "It wasn't marines", protests the soldier. "But if they did do it, they did it for a reason." Back at camp, men speak of their desire to return home. "My mum hasn't seen us together in almost four years", states one. "No amount of money is worth being here". Tags: Journeyman Pictures Anbar US Iraq Success Killing Accusations Soldiers War |

The Ghost of Anbar -- And -- Progress In Iraq? Part 1/3 U.S. Ally Sheik Abu Risha Killed in Anbar Province. Morning Edition, September 13, 2007 · The most prominent figure in a U.S.-backed revolt of Sunni sheiks against al-Qaida in Iraq was killed Thursday by a bomb planted near his home in Anbar province, 10 days after he met with President Bush, police and tribal leaders said. Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha was leader of the Anbar Salvation Council, also known as the Anbar Awakening — an alliance of clans backing the Iraqi government and U.S. forces. Officials said his assassination would be a huge setback for U.S. efforts in Iraq, because it sends a message to others who are cooperating with coalition forces or thinking about cooperating against al-Qaida. Abu Risha and four of his bodyguards were killed by a roadside bomb planted near the tribal leader's home in Ramadi, Anbar's provincial capital, said Col. Tareq Youssef, supervisor of Anbar police. A spokesman for Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, confirmed the report. "It is confirmed that the sheik and two of his bodyguards were killed today near or outside his home," Col. Steven Boylan said in an e-mail from Washington, where Petraeus testified before Congress this week on recent successes in Anbar province. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=14383382&ft=1&f=3 Tags: War Iraq Vietnam 9/11 Empire Terrorism Imperialist |

US Troops Welcome President Bush to Anbar Province President Bush arrives in Iraq. Sep 3 2007 _______________________ During a rally for troops at the base, Bush said any pullout would be made from a position of "strength and success." "People shouldn't jump to conclusions until the general and the ambassador report," Bush said. During a rally later for more than 600 American troops at the base, Bush warned members of Congress who might be anticipating quick reductions in U.S. forces. "Those decisions will be based on a calm assessment by our military commanders on the conditions on the ground, not reaction by Washington politicians to poll results in the media," said Bush. "In other words, when we begin to draw down troops from Iraq, it will be from a position of strength and success, not from the position of fear and failure." Praising the troops, Bush said, "every day you show bravery under incredibly difficult circumstances. I'm incredibly proud to be the commander in chief of such a great group of men and women." The excited crowd responded to their commander in chief with hearty cheers and shouts of "ooh-rah!" and "hoo-ah!" Bush met earlier with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. He also met with Anbar tribal leaders hailing their cooperation with U.S. forces as a success in fighting al Qaeda in Iraq. "The level of violence is down, local governments are meeting again, police are in control of the city streets and normal life is returning," said Bush. The president credited Anbar citizens who "rejected the dark vision of al Qaeda" and "organized themselves and they took on the terrorists." "The result was that many local leaders who had once fought against our forces began to fight alongside our forces and against al Qaeda," Bush said. "They didn't like idea of murderers deciding their fate," he said. http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/09/03/bush.iraq/index.html Tags: President Bush US Troops Anbar council war |

President George W. Bush in Anbar Province, Iraq Don't miss the end of this video. The Commander-in-Chief along with the Secretary of Defense, Secretary of State, and many high ranking generals, gave a speech to the troops in a surprise visit to Iraq. The sound is somewhat distorted by some of the applause and cheers from the troops in the audience. I also added a very fitting piece from LOTR. A local fight for security in al-Anbar province - 10 Sept 07 General Petraeus, the US commander in Iraq, is holding up the Iraqi western province of al-Anbar as an icon of the success of the United State's troop increase in the country. He says it is now peaceful, thanks to their security plan. But as Al Jazeera's James Bays has been finding out, residents in the area are telling a very different story. Marines - MRAPs roll into Anbar Iraq The Pentagon will phase out its armored Humvees in Iraq and Afghanistan and send in vehicles that better withstand roadside bomb blasts, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday. Replacing the Humvee, the military's main troop-transport vehicle, will be the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle, known as an MRAP. Military officials say the new vehicles provide twice as much protection against improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which cause 70% of all U.S. casualties in Iraq. Armored Humvees were "the best we had," Gates said. "Now we have something better, and we're going to get that to the field as best we can." No Marines had been killed in the 300 attacks on Marine MRAPs in Anbar province, USA TODAY reported on April 19. Last week, two Army soldiers were killed when a bomb struck their MRAP in Iraq. Humvees have had a tortured history since the Iraq war started in March 2003. Few had armor in the early months of the war, but the rise of IEDs led troops to add their own armor. Then Congress pushed the Pentagon to buy armor kits and new, fully armored Humvees. The added armor, though, made it more likely for the Humvee to roll over, and its heavier doors trapped soldiers inside after an attack or accident.
