Don't Use Antibacterial Soap, Or Overuse Antibiotics People are dying from MRSA bacteria as the result of the overuse of antibiotics and antibacterial agents in soap, detergents and toothpaste. Antibacterial soap has also been linked to cancer, upsets hormones including thyroid, and contaminates breast milk. Some 72% of all liquid soap sold in the United States now contains antibacterial ingredients, as do many toothpastes. People who use antibacterial soaps and cleansers develop bacterial-born illnesses just as often as people who use products that do not contain antibacterial ingredients. This video mentions that it is natural for certain bacteria to be on our skin. Unlike what we've been taught, bacteria is not our enemy. Children exposed to bacteria in early childhood actually have stronger immune systems. Bacteria only becomes uncontrollable when our immune systems are suppressed by a lack of nutrition, stress, too little sleep and of course prescription drugs, which purposely suppress immunity. Over 95% of the time that antibiotics are prescribed it is for viruses such as colds and flu, despite the fact that this is futile - but it is big business. Bacteria fights back against attacks from antibiotics and antibacterial agents found in household products, and the result is "super bugs." The best way to stay healthy is to eat healthy and take high quality nutritional supplements. Get enough sleep, sunshine, and eliminate stress as much as possible. Antibacterial soaps bring in $16 billion per year for their makers, despite the fact that they don't work and are dangerous. All-natural soaps are great. You can get them at Whole Foods or health food stores. I like to buy soaps whose labels I can read and understand. Olive and lavender oil are some possible ingredients, for example. If you can't find all-natural detergents at your health food store, try online companies such as Sunrider. The Eyes of Nye - 109 - Antibiotics 1/3 Finally someone insightfully tackles today's issues from a scientific perspective. In Bill Nye's new show The Eyes of Nye, Bill shows you that the battle between microbes and humans is far from over. In fact, deaths from infectious diseases have increased since the 1980s. Some of the rise is due to new "bugs" such as HIV and hepatitis C, but the alarming increase in antibiotic resistance is also responsible. Bill talks with experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about new narrow-spectrum antibiotics and "bacteriocins" and demonstrates just how important hand-washing really is in the fight against germs. Antibiotics - Dangerous or Safe? Stop Abusing Antibiotics! FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2008 Filed under: dangerous or safe In the ninth instalment of her "Dangerous or Safe?" series, paediatrician Dr. Cara Natter son sets the record straight on antibiotics. Getty Images WHAT IS THE QUESTION? The discovery of antibiotics marked one of the major turning points in medical history: For the first time, medicines could fight infections head on. But ... *antibiotics only fight infections *antibiotics only treat one kind of infection: bacterial *each specific antibiotic only fights a few particular bacteria It quickly became a slippery slope to the abuse of antibiotics: *when given "just in case," antibiotics became grossly overused *almost immediately, bacteria evolved strategies to live through the antibiotics -- this then required higher doses and newer formulations *now there are bacteria resistant to almost all antibiotics that exist -- and we cannot come up with new antibiotics fast enough How big a problem is antibiotic resistance? *approximately 2 million people acquire infections while being hospitalized every year, an estimated 90,000 of them die of these infections, and 70% of these bacteria are resistant to at least one drug (and some are resistant to all) *in the community (rather than within the hospital), there are two drug resistant bacteria that have become so ubiquitous, they are widely known by their acronyms: MRSA (methacillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococcus) How did we get to this point with resistance? *parents request antibiotics or doctors prescribe them unnecessarily *patients are often noncompliant with their antibiotics (not completing the course or missing a few doses here and there) *we have exposures to antibiotics we don't often think about, like through our food supply (via the use of antibiotics in feed, in plant material, and to proactively ward off infections so that animals can grow big and strong) WHAT IS THE BOTTOM LINE? Antibiotics (along with their preventive counterpart, vaccines) are credited with adding an average of 20 years of lifespan to people living in developed countries. These are not evil medications. When used appropriately, they can be miracle cures. But they haven't always been used appropriately. *doctors need to get better and better at prescribing antibiotics judiciously *consumers should learn to rely upon their doctors to determine when an antibiotic is necessary and appropriate *patients need to learn to follow the prescribed course of an antibiotic, and not adjust it according to their own medical expertise *we should all be working to get antibiotics out of our food supply, working to encourage farmers to stop using antibiotics in farm animals Tags: CRYPTOMONADALES CLEANSE PPAR MERIDIAN LIFE GREEN ALGAE CRYPTO+ GALL STONES CYSTIC MASS OVARIAN CYST |

Warning on Tendon Injuries with Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics October 2008- FDA has asked that a boxed warning be added to the prescribing information for fluoroquinolone antibiotics. The warning will remind healthcare professionals that patients taking these drugs may experience an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture. Fluoroquinolones include Cipro (ciprofloxacin), Factive (gemifloxacin), Levaquin (levofloxacin), Avelox (moxifloxacin), Noroxin (norfloxacin), Floxin (ofloxacin) and Proquin (ciprofloxacin hydrochloride). FDA is concerned that large numbers of tendon problems were continuing to be reported, despite a warning that already appears in the labeling for these drugs. The boxed warning is being added to draw the practitioner's attention to this information. This can also affect the benefit-risk decisions that are made when these drugs are prescribed. Certain patients are at greater risk for these injuries, including those over 60, those taking corticosteroids, and patients who have had heart, lung or kidney transplants. Certain tendons are also more likely to be affected. The Achilles is the most commonly affected, but other tendons can also be involved, including those in the rotator cuff, the biceps, the hand and the thumb. It is important to remember that the risk for injury is not necessarily gone when the drug is stopped. Cases have been reported in which tendon problems occurred up to several months after the drug was discontinued. Also, this increased risk of tendon problems applies only to patients who are getting fluoroquinolones systemically; patients taking eye drops or ear drops are not affected. Fluoroquinolones may be associated with serious risks other than tendinitis and tendon rupture. These risks are rare but may include convulsions, hallucinations, depression, heart rhythm changes, and serious allergic reactions. Since fluoroquinolones are vital drugs in treating certain bacterial infections, the practitioner may decide that the benefits of the drug outweigh the risk for a given patient. In these cases, the practitioner should caution patients to watch out for pain, swelling or inflammation in a tendon area, because that could signal tendinitis, and to know the signs and symptoms of a tendon rupture. If patients experience any of these things, they should avoid using or exercising that area of the body, stop the drug, and see their doctor about the possibility of switching to another type of antibiotic. It is important that patients understand what to look for and what to do, so FDA has asked the manufacturers of fluoroquinolones to develop a Medication Guide containing this information, which will be given to the patient with each prescription. Antibiotics Is Aggressive Approach To Nuking Microbes Please rate this video 5 stars, comment on it, subscribe to my channel, add it to your favorites and share this video with your friends. I really appreciate your help. If we all work together we can make the world a better, more enjoyable place! Dr. Michael Borkin, NMD is a pioneer in hormone and electrolyte research. He specializes in hormone and electrolyte testing and balancing. His lab currently uses saliva to test the bio-availability of DHEA, Cortisol, Progesterone, Testosterone and Estradiol and the electrolyte levels of sodium, potassium, chloride in both men and women over a 24 hour period of time. They will soon be testing urine also to discover the levels of the many other important electrolytes that help doctors understand and balance their patient's brain chemistry. The one-two evaluation of hormones and electrolyte levels in patients provides an in-depth snap shot of the health level and disease processes going on in humans. These tests and the unique balancing programs created by the trained doctors and lab technicians are incredibly valuable for individuals who have used anabolic steroids, HGH (human growth hormone), insulin, testosterone and progesterone without understanding the importance of exact supplementation in response to test results. Gross dosing without testing has caused many people to be biochemically and hormonally out of balance. Dr. Michael Borkin is also one of the creators of the science of bio-identical hormones and transdermal (through the skin) creams. Unique creams are created for each patient to restore hormonal homeostasis. The creams are made up of hormones, hormone precursors, nutrients, homeopathics, herbs and electrolytes. Specific electrolyte and nutrient rich supplements help balance each patient's bio-chemistry in all their cells, including the brain. Dr. Borkin invested many years in treating the "Who's Who" of Hollywood and Las Vegas. After studying so many people who violate the health laws and natural circadian cycle (24-hour light and dark cycle), that stay up all night and sleep during the day, he became the leading expert on the three stages of adrenal exhaustion and the terrible consequences of a stressful life. As we all know, stress kills. Some of the most famous actors, stars and athletes are his patients. They keep his name as a jealously guarded secret so he will personally have time to work with them. They want to take advantage of his knowledge and research so he can create and monitor their special balancing programs. They are desperate to look younger, have more energy, feel their best and perform at optimal levels. Dr. Borkin has developed a 24-hour test of the flood of hormones and electrolytes throughout the entire body, every 4 hours. A patient starts collecting their saliva at 8 AM. They take a sample every 4 hours until 4 AM the next morning. By studying the levels of bio-active hormones and electrolytes available in saliva, doctors learn a great deal about the health and disease processes going on inside their patients' cells. Dr. Michael Borkin, NMD's saliva testing of hormones and electrolytes and customized cream production is one of the answers to biorhythm imbalances that occur on critical and sub-critical biorhythm days. Dr. Tatai, MD, one of the leading biorhythm safety consultants in Japan, believed hormonal imbalances were the cause of biorhythm instability that resulted in accidents, injuries and mistakes on unstable days. Dr. Borkin also realized through his research that our beloved pets suffer hideously because of hormonal and electrolyte imbalances. Dr. Borkin's lab will soon be adding testing for brain chemistry along with hormone testing for pets and animals. Their levels of balance are similar to that of humans. It is time our cats, dogs and horses were spared the ravages of cancer, arthritis and other life threatening viral, parasitic and bacterial infections. It is amazing just how healthy a person or pet can be when their hormones and brain biochemistry is balanced by supplementation. Dr. Borkin will soon be offering special testing for professional athletes and top-performing animals, industry leaders and important politicians who want to look and feel their best. By addressing health problems at the hormonal and biochemical levels, the return to health, well-being and optimal performance is possible. A wonderful life is also available for pets, at a minimal investment, when their owners seek to provide hormonal and electrolyte supplementation that will restore hormonal balance and biochemical homeostasis for their pets. Everyone who has ever loved a dog, cat, or horse knows how tragic and painful it is to lose our best friends needlessly to catastrophic diseases that ruin their quality of life and lead to premature death or euthanasia. Over many years, Dr. Borkin has created a Four Module training program for doctors and health experts. Surgical Errors Part II: Wrong Site Surgery and Antibiotics Dear All, I got a chance to listen to a talk by Dr. James Herndon, who is a past president of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery (AAOS). He is a distinguished professor of surgery who wanted us to know more about things to improve upon in reducing surgical errors. Please put this information on your radar screen if you or your friend is going to get surgery because it might be of help. My video is on: 1) wrong site surgery (when the wrong place is operated on by accident) and 2) people not getting antibiotics when they should be and/or getting too much antibiotics when they shouldn't be. References: 1) For more information on wrong-site surgery and simple solutions to prevent it: a) This is a piece by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery http://www5.aaos.org/wrong/setup.cfm b) This is a commentary by Dr. Herndon http://www.jbjs.org/Comments/2003/cp_feb03_herndon.shtml For Information on Antibiotics: I misspoke in the video. The actual figure is: 44% who need antimicrobials weren't receiving them (Bratzler et al., 2005; see below). This paper talks about antibiotics and how enough people aren't getting them: 1) Bratzler DW, Houck PM, Richards C, et al. Use of Antimicrobial prophylaxis for major surgery. Arch Surg. 2005; 140:174-182. Some noteworthy parts from the paper: "RESULTS: An antimicrobial dose was administered to 55.7% (95% confidence interval [CI], 54.8%-56.6%) of patients within 1 hour before incision. Antimicrobial agents consistent with published guidelines were administered to 92.6% (95% CI, 92.3%-92.8%) of the patients. Antimicrobial prophylaxis was discontinued within 24 hours of surgery end time for only 40.7% (95% CI, 40.2%-41.2%) of patients. CONCLUSION: Substantial opportunities exist to improve the use of prophylactic antimicrobials for patients undergoing major surgery." Please e-mail me for more references if you need them at: unitedstatesmedicalstudent@gmail.com General idea behind these health videos: I'm a first year medical student here at the U.S.. Every day, I'm learning exciting and critical topics on medicine and health. But too often, the things I'm learning about never reach the public. I wanted to try an experiment -- sharing health information on youtube, with the sole purpose of trying to get more important health information to you all. Unlike some of the other health videos out there, mine are not about promoting a book, a diet, a pill, an agenda. I hope to answer your questions either through e-mail or through the video updates -- please, please, (please!) e-mail me any questions and I will try my best to answer them by asking my professors and by citing credibles sources (JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine, etc...) e-mail: unitedstatesmedicalstudent@gma il.com I hope this experiment works -- and if it fails, I hope someone sees these videos, says, "hmmm, these are bad videos, but I love the idea," and decides to go for it. ___________ P.S. I wanted to point out something important: I'm just a medical student, so my posts are hopefully conversation starters, but only conversation starters — not medical advice. If my posts intrigue you, please read more about the topic and discuss about it with your doctor. I'd be happy to send you the information in the journal articles I talk about. Also, the opinions expressed in this post are not necessarily those of Harvard Medical School, its affiliated institutions, or Harvard University. Best wishes! Quarantine new reptiles - Part III - BOA ANTIBIOTICS CLICK THE LINK UNDER THE VIDEO TO WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY!! More support to the importance of quarantining a new reptile... Larry, my Surinam Red Tail, ended up having mites and a stomach parasite. The mites spread to another boa this time and after finding out about the stomach parasite, the medicine was given to all boas as a precaution. A mite would have to be swallowed live by another boa for the stomach parasite to spread, so the chances are small. I've sprayed with Nix again and I hope to be rid of the problem for good!
