Calumet, OK Anticyclonic Tornado Storm Chase My wife and I saw 4 tornadoes produced from one extremely isolated supercell thunderstorm that tracked across the entire state of Oklahoma. We had to punch through the core of the storm just in front of the wall cloud near Thomas, OK. It was impressive to see the massive storm sucking in dust from Red Rock Canyon State Park which was 10 miles to its south! North of and near Calumet, OK we saw 3 tornado touchdowns and we continued to follow the storm Northeast through north OKC and up route 66. Corn Oklahoma Tornado June 8th, 1951 B&W, no audio Cool photo of the two tornadoes before they merged. Some interesting & little known facts about this tornado: The event actually consisted of two separate tornadoes, which merged to become a single funnel. Before the twisters joined, one tornado rotated counter-clockwise (cyclonic), the other spun clockwise (anticyclonic). This tornado is often thought to be the first one ever captured on film. That's true in that it was the first one recorded in the US. But the very first one in the world to be filmed was in 1933 in Cuba. I'd been tooling around with this edit for months, adding bits here and there when I had the time. The Big Tornadoes - Part 1 This is part one of three of the video "The Big Tornadoes" (that's not its original name, for whatever reason the producers of this videotape decided to rename it. The original title of this video was "Terrible Tuesday" and was made in 1984). This is a tornado safety film that focuses on the Wichita Falls, Texas tornado that occurred on April 10, 1979. This was an F4 tornado that was nearly a mile and a half wide. Part one of this video shows some footage of the actual tornado (along with some stock footage of other tornadoes thrown in for dramatic effect) along with survivor accounts and an overview of how Wichita Falls handles a disaster. One of the survivors who is telling his story unwittingly started the deadly myth that hiding under a highway overpass during a tornado will protect you.
