His actors relish their parts and play them sensitively, even to the smallest roles. Malvolio the Puritan is festivity's ememy. In a brilliant performance, Alec McCowen's effeminate sneers and gestures capture Puritan superciliousness, excessive self-regard and vain ambition. when placed in the "dark room," McCowen appears on a bed of straw, trapped behind bars. Malvolio's last line--"I'll be revenged on the whole pack of you"--reeks with anguish and disappointed hopes. but this Malvolio is so deliciously obnoxious that we never take him seriously, and nothing mars the finale's festive tone. Feste is startling in this production. As the household pet, Trevor Peacock is not the usal tense thoroughbred. Instead he seems more like a lumbering and loveable mutt. Peacock's yeoman physique makes Feste manly and substantial. His singing voice is scratchy baritone, his manner down-to-earth. There is nothing of Ariel in this Fool.
