Money Minute: Vytorin, Banks, Bernanke BusinessMoney Minute: Vytorin, Banks, BernankeMoney Minute: Vytorin, Banks, BernankeThe Associated PressA new study shows that the cholesterol drug Vytorin doesn't lower the risk of major heart valve problems and need for related surgical procedures. The AP's Mark Hamrick reports on that and Monday's other toheadlines. (July 21)The cholesterol drug Vytorin doesn't lower the risk of major heart valve problems and need for related surgical procedures. According to a large-scale study, Schering-Plough and Merck's drug was no better than placebo at lowering a the risk of major cardiovascular events. Vytorin also failed to meet one of its two secondary goals, which both involved reducing certain types of heart problems.--------------------------Bank of America said its second-quarter profit fell 41 percent. But the nation's second-largest bank still beat Wall Street expectations. Bank of America reported income of $3.41 billion, or 72 cents per share, on $20.32 billion in revenue. That compared with net income of $5.76 billion, or $1.28 per share, on $19.63 billion in revenue a year earlier.--------------------------Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has taken extraordinary steps to ease the nation's economic problems. His own finances are a bit more straightforward. The chairman's financial disclosure form shows his holdings last year were in no-frills investments, including U.S. Treasury securities, Canadian Treasury bonds, mutual funds and annuities. Bernanke's salary last year was $186,600. This year it rises to $191,300. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) Tags: scherring plough minute: vytorin banks bernanke |

Bernanke Tries to Reassure Lawmakers on Economy BusinessBernanke Tries to Reassure Lawmakers on EconomyBernanke Tries to Reassure Lawmakers on EconomyThe Associated PressFederal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke tried to assure lawmakers Wednesday that the government is prepared to take all necessary steps to prevent the credit market troubles that started last year from further weakening the economy.(July 16)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] For a second day in a row, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke testified before Congress on the problems facing the economy. Bernanke appeared amid a backdrop of fading confidence in the U.S. financial system, but stressed that policymakers are working to find solutions to the issues at hand.[Notes:SOT: Bernanke:]I TEND TO HAVE A VERY SHORT-TERM FOCUS AND OBVIOUSLY WE HAVE A LOT OF CHALLENGES AHEAD. WE WILL WORK OUR WAY THROUGH THIS FINANCIAL STORM AND THE CYCLICAL MOVEMENTS AND HELP THE ECONOMY RETURN TO GOOD GROWTHThose challenges are immense: ongoing credit troubles, high energy and food prices, and a severe housing slump. In response to controversy over the financial lifeline the government extended to mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Bernanke said keeping them in their current form is said the best solution going forward. With the economic problems expected to continue well into next year, the Fed is faced with finding the right course of action. It can't afford to lower interest rates again because that will aggravate inflation. On the other hand, boosting rates to fend off higher prices would deal a setback to the fragile economy and the already crippled housing market. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) Tags: bernanke reassure lawmakers on economy |

Economy: Bush Reassures, Bernanke Worries PlusEconomy: Bush Reassures, Bernanke WorriesEconomy: Bush Reassures, Bernanke WorriesThe Associated PressAmid financial turmoil and new layoffs, President Bush is trying to reassure Americans about the troubled economy, but Fed Chief Ben Bernanke is sounding more worried. (July 15)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:Bush walk-in]It was his first formal news conference since April, and President Bush laced it with words of reassurance. [Notes:Housing slump video, then Fannie/Freddie]He said despite a deepening housing slump, troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are NOT going under ... [Notes:IndyMac]... and despite another bank failure, Americans should "take a deep breath" and not worry about their money. BUSH SOT: (7:48 from start) I think the system basically is sound. I truly do. I understand there is a lot of nervousness. (:05) [Notes:General file footage econ] He says there's still no recession, and some economic indicators are still up. BUSH SOT: (39:30 from start) "I believe there's a lot of positive things for our economy. But I will tell you it's not growing the way it should. And I'm sorry people are paying as high gasoline prices as they are." ("07) [Notes:To Bernanke]However, on Capitol Hill, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke took a less rosy view. BERNANKE SOT: (10:17 approx, Jerry says in 2nd graf of his opening statement) "The economy continues to face numerous difficulties, including ongoing strains in financial markets, declining house prices, a softening labor market, and rising prices of oil food and some other commodities." (:12) [Notes:File footage gas pump, consumer prices]His worries include inflation running at its fastest clip in 27 years ... [Notes:More housing file footage]... and the sub-prime meltdown causing banks to stop lending. BERNANKE SOT: (10:44 a.m. approx) ''My concerns have turned more, er less, on the solvency of these institutions and more on their ability to extend the credit that our economy needs to keep growing.'' (:10) [Notes:GM file] Undescoring the worry, GM announced it's slashing truck production, laying off salaried workers and borrowing up to $3 billion -- and its stock hit a 54-year low. [Notes:Standup]Even an otherwise upbeat president is refusing to venture a guess as to when all this turmoil will end. Asked if he foresees an upturn before he leaves office, Bush replied, "I'm not an economist ... I'm an optimist."MS, The Associated Press, the White House Tags: economy economy: bush reassures bernanke worries |
