Waste Removal Technology at Biofuels Conference CHEN: And with the outset of global warming, Japanese biotech companies are developing environmental conservation technology for eco-friendly sustainability. BioFuels World Conference & Expo 2008 was held in Yokohama, Japan to promote renewable energy and waste management technology. Let's take a look. STORY: Japan's top biotech companies and recycling organizations gathered at BioFuels Conference & Expo 2008 to introduce the latest technology for recycling and reducing waste. Investors and entrepreneurs interested in renewable energy attended the event at the Pacifico Yokohama Exhibition Hall in Yokohama, Japan for the convention. acECOok, a Japanese food company, exhibited instant noodles packed in a completely biodegradable package. Calling it the "Eco-Cup Ramen," the package is made of biomass, a renewable energy derived from plant and animal matter. In a years time, the package will decompose after disposal unlike conventional Styrofoam packaging. An Othello set made completely out of coffee grounds and other goods made from biomass were also on display. Sankyo Hagata Kogyo, a biotech company, created a garbage processor called "Bio 21" capable of completely decomposing garbage into water and harmless gas in 24 hours. The system doesn't rely on fire to disintegrate waste but uses seven kinds of composite bacteria to "eat" the waste. H2O and CO2 are leftover which are reused to keep the bacteria active in the processor. [Hisayuki Mikoshi, Bio 21 Inventor]: "The composite bacteria have a function we call 'Hydraulic Birth function,' in which the different kinds of bacteria are using each of their specific function to decompose the waste: burnable garbage, plastic, film, containers, everything. But metal, glass, rubber, and earthenware cannot be decomposed inside because they are inorganic waste." Along with the biotech companies, JORA, or Japan Organics Recycling Association, is working to advance these latest technologies as commonplace. Currently, JORA is working to promote the Biomass Mark, a label to distinguish commodities as biodegradable. Although biomass emits CO2 when utilized, it is considered "carbon neutral" because the released carbon is actually a part of natural atmospheric cycle. In contrast, the carbon in fossil fuels is released from long-term storage into the atmosphere as new carbon not part of the atmospheric cycle. NTD, Yokohama, Japan.
